Book Review: Grey Tide in the East

Author: Andrew J. Heller

Publisher: Strict Publishing International

Reviewing Author: Avery Abernethy

Grey Tide in the East is a short (164 page) World War One alternative history book.  The movement towards war is unchanged from history up until the day before the German right flank is scheduled to cross the Belgian border in hopes of outflanking the French army and capturing Paris.  Kaiser Wilhelm abruptly changes his mind about the war plans due to the almost certainty that the United Kingdom would enter the war if Germany violated Belgian neutrality.  Instead, the majority of the Imperial German Army is packed into trains and sent to East Russia to fight the invading Russian army.

Even casual readers of the history of World War One understand that the mobilization timetables of the major armies were almost unstoppable once they were put into action.   Those largely unfamiliar with the conflict could read Tuchman’s The Guns of August or Keegan’s The First World War to get an understanding of the importance of pre-war plans and mobilization schedules.  The logistical operation to mobilize and move huge Corps on a fixed rail net was massive.  In Grey Tide in the East the Kaiser orders Moltke to change the entire pre-war strategy at the almost the last possible moment.

Origins 2013 – Wargames!

Hey, look – we’re Grogs, right?  Which means we’re looking for wargames, right?  Despite the whining and moaning on Consimworld that someone’s favorite game company wasn’t there, Origins has plenty of wargaming – if you bother to look for it.  We’ve already shown you Collins Epic Wargames, but here are some of the other wargaming found at Origins in 2013.

Academy Games

They’re not exclusively wargaming, but their wargames are attracting a ton of positive attention from grogs and general boardgamers alike.

Conflict of Heroes is still attracting a ton of walk-up interest at the Academy Games table

Cap’n Darwin versus The Red Baron

Author: Jim “Cap’n Darwin” Snyder

1. Introduction

Welcome To my Grogheads May-viation article. When Brant contacted me saying, “Hey you’re a propeller-head. Can you say a few words about aircraft and the things you have done.” I said, “Sure.” So I jumped on the ole computer and started typing. ‘Wings, propeller, flap, rudder, fuselage’. Then it hit me. Maybe, just maybe, he wants a bit more insight and pop for this article. Something a Groghead might actually be interested in reading about that combines aviation, gaming, and game design activities. Lucky for me, I just happened to have worked a number of years back on a little project known as Full Canvas Jacket.

The recent surge in wargames set during the First World War is leaving Wargamers spoilt for choice. With Squad Battles: First World War, Boggit takes Grog’s view of whether it is a “Breakthrough” or is “Caught on the Wire”.

Squad Battles: First World War John Tiller Software’s latest addition to their series of Squad Battles games. Hitherto John Tiller’s Squad Battles have focused on the Modern and World War Two timeframe. PC Game Review of Strategic Command WW1 Breakthrough

A review by Boggit, 14 December, 2012

Developed by Fury Software and published by Battlefront Inc.

Wargamers have recently had a series of fine wargames set during the First World War competing for their attention. With the Breakthrough expansion to Strategic Command World War One, Boggit takes a Grog’s view of whether this is just “Over the Top” or “Bang on Target”.

Strategic Command World War One Breakthrough is Fury Software’s latest addition to their Strategic Command stable of games. Strategic Command World War One Breakthrough is an add-on to Strategic Command World War One, so what has changed with the addition of Breakthrough, and for those unfamiliar with Strategic Command World War One itself, how does the game play?

Breakthrough makes a number of changes to the Strategic Command World War One game engine and introduces a new unit – the armoured train, which substitutes for the rail gun in some scenarios. The game engine changes cover a host of improvements including new hotkeys and some nice combat features like combat unit swapping, improved bombardment options, and so on. Supply rules have been overhauled and improved. Breakthrough also adds a variety of additional scenarios and a range of modding features to the game editor.
