Origins! Your Grog Crew

A Grog has no name.  A Grog has only a screen name. ~

Dubbed “Fort Kickass” by the GrogHeads Central Command crew, our little patch of concrete in the gaming hall was the nexus of some excellent wargaming at Origins 2016.  While it’s not the overwhelming dominant presence in the gaming hall like it was in 1978, anyone who says that “there’s no wargaming at Origins” is just flat-out wrong.  Hex-and-counter, card-driven area, or minis-on-terrain, we had wargames in spades.

More to the point, we had the Grogs!

And our GrogHeads crew has their own thoughts about Origins 2016, as we asked them (1) “What’s the coolest thing you saw?” and (2) “What was the thing you enjoyed most?”.  Here’s what they told us…

Origins! Last Day Wrap-up

What do you do when it’s all been done? ~

Corinne Mahaffey, 20 June 2016

Sunday is a weird day at Origins.  The high points of Friday and Saturday are over, and it’s a thinner crowd.  Some people are intent on finding a possible last minute deal in the Dealer’s Room, others are squeezing out the last possible bit of gaming time.  And many people are trickling off homewards.

GrogHeads Staff, 08 June 2016

This time next week we’ll be setting up the GrogHeads Central Command at Origins, and firing up a couple of drop-in afternoon games for Wednesday, before our full program starts on Thursday.

In addition to our events, we’re going to have all sorts of coverage from the show itself.  You tell us – what do you want us to cover while we’re there?  Give us your votes below.

News! Origins Releases On-Site Program Book

Check out the latest from GAMA ~

GrogHeads Newsdesk, 08 June 2016

The Origins on-site program (PDF) has been released.

Of note to the GrogHeads community is the map of the gaming hall, that show where we’re co-located with several of our wargaming partners, and nicely nestled near the front of the D-Hall.

Of course, they just labeled us “War Gamers” even after years of specifically branding this as “GrogHeads Central Command”…  Le sigh.

At GrogHeads, our readers have the final say on the best games of the year, as we unveil the 2015 Readers’ Choice Awards…

First off, this year saw a variety of well-loved games released, and others updated with some excellent expansions.  And yet, even with an entire year to nominate games, we still had folks bemoaning “why wasn’t _____ on the list?”  The answer is the same every time: no one nominated it!  It’s your award, and you dear reader, get to pick your own choices.

Several categories were hotly contested, including at least one where we had a tie.  A few were runaways.  All of them were selected by you!

The GrogHeads Readers’ Choice Overall 2015 Digital Game of the Year was Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa, followed by Combat Mission:Black Sea, and XCOM Enemy Within in third.

GrogHeads Readers’ Choice Overall 2015 Tabletop Game of the Year was Churchill, which beat out Enemy Action: Ardennes.  Triumph & Tragedy squeaked into third, mere votes ahead of Star Wars: Imperial Assault.
