In the distance the smoke rising from the burning wrecks of the Hun’s tanks blemishes an otherwise beautiful view.  The tank beneath me slowly rumbles forward as I can hear the main gun being reloaded behind me.  Ahead lays a vineyard that will soon be destroyed.  I take no pleasure in destroying the livelihood of another, but it stands in my path to the enemy.  In this moment beyond the destruction of my enemy nothing else matters, all else is forfeit.  The thought of this scares me but I know it is what must be done.  So much has been changed by this war, so much is different.  These thoughts, this singled minded drive for destruction, I did not always think like this … what have I become?

A sudden airborne drop behind enemy lines by NATO is designed to keep the Warsaw Pact off-balance. This lightly defended hinterland looks ripe for the pickings but look closely: two East German Mig-17s are swooping in from the left spoil this surprise attack. Air power can’t win this battle by itself, but it sure can put a dent in the troops trying to seize this ground.

As the French country side rushes by below me, my world is momentarily peaceful.  The only sound is the steady hum of my plane’s engine and the wind washing over the cockpit and past my weathered face.  Leaning my head back I close my eyes for a minute and let the bright rays of the morning sun warm my chilled face.  Grudgingly I reopen them and squint into the distance, as my eyes readjust to the brightness.  Out of a broken cloud bank two black dots materialize.  I smile as I have found this morning’s prey.  Signaling my wingman, I begin a slow climb into the clouds above me.  As I near the clouds the serenity of the morning is ruthlessly broken by bullets flying over my head and tearing into canvas around me.  Twisting and turning in my seat I finally catch the chilling sight of two enemy planes on my tail just as I disappear in to the concealing but temporary safety of the clouds.

Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai

It was almost poetic.

My clan, the last supporting the Shogunate, was being destroyed by the invasion of new cultural ways we fought so hard to resist. Overlooking the courtyard I did not feel sad but proud that we had survived as far as we did.

But then grief did overtake me…would Japan, or the world, ever see men like us again? Would we be totally snuffed out? It just couldn’t be true. I could not accept that this was the final battle of my kind. I hated to think that we would disappear forever. I could not accept it.

Then…from what must have been miles away…great deep-sounding, booming shots, like a volcano erupting, were fired at my keep from the great iron ships in the harbor, destroying one of the towers and killing dozens of my samurai in just one salvo. I jumped from the wall, landing in the high grass and ran uphill away from the inferno my fortress had become.

I never looked back.
