Huzzah! – Photos from the Convention
Portland, Maine has a game convention?! ~
Chris Paquette, 6 June 2018
Every May, the good folks at the MHWA set up their long weekend of HUZZAH! It started as a minis-heavy gaming convention and has expanded to other tabletop games, as well. But lets face it, it’s the minis that look the best on the table.

Skull Tales: Full Sail! ~ Kickstarter
An exclusive look at the prototypes in action ~
GrogHeads Newsdesk, 23 May 2018
The guys over at Eclipse Editorial have an exploding Kickstarter that’s reeling in pledges like a pirate chases booty.
The Skull Tales: Full Sail! pirate-themed boardgame mixes a combination of naval adventures at sea with individual actions ashore, and crew & ship management in between. As of now, there’s over 3400 backers that have pledged almost $400,000 toward the game, including a couple of our own GrogHeads.
We’ve got an exclusive look at the game in action with some of the printing press prototypes, thanks to the guys at Eclipse, and Draco Designs.
Raiders of the Deep – First Look!
Michael… ahem, “dives” into the Compass Games sub warfare box ~
Michael Eckenfels, 7 April 2018
It seems that the solitaire wargame market for submarines is picking up steam (a harr a harr) in the last few years. Silent Victory, Silent War, Target Bearing 023 Degrees, Operation Drumbeat, The Hunters…there’s plenty of options, including this title, Raiders Of The Deep from Compass Games.
Based on the same system that The Hunters and Silent Victory use, Raiders Of The Deep puts you into the role of a German submarine commander in World War I. This is a very intriguing prospect to me, being based in World War I, when submarine warfare really came into its own. Some of the German submarines at the outbreak of war were tiny things that could hold maybe 15 sailors and two torpedoes, but they evolved quickly over the following years of The Great War.
GrogHeads Reviews Sovereign of the Seas
Global naval conflict in the Age of Sail? Yes, please! ~
Jim Owczarski, 26 August 2017
The child of many gifts who does not rise to his potential is a cliche. Now a parent, I find that cliche, when made flesh, to be one of the most frustrating of human experiences. After all, this is a person you love with all your heart, who you know is capable of remarkable things, and yet, in this moment, for reasons you cannot discern, is just not, well, getting it done.
Thus my summary of Compass Games’ Sovereign of the Seas, an improvisation on the theme of Avalon Hill’s legendary War at Sea that has within it some legitimately fun, if light, game play, but needed more time in development; development that now, unfortunately, is being handled after release.

Some thoughts on strategy for your naval battles ~
Avery Abernethy, 20 August 2017
Avoid purchasing battleships.
I have several strategy suggestions gleaned from three completed games. Avoid purchasing battleships. They are slower than cruisers and their firepower against surface ships are not worth the extra price. But the obsolete battleship you start with at Danzig is remarkably effective as an anti-aircraft platform. It is helpful to keep her alive. You need to stay with the Deutchland cruiser class for two reasons. First, they are less expensive. Second, they have a one hex greater firing range than the Admiral Hipper class. The extra firing range is much more important than slightly higher damage.
