20 October 2017 ~

We wrap up Season 5 of the GrogCast with some discussions of games that just couldn’t scratch that gaming itch, games that need graphics overhauls, and the oldest dice in our collections, along with the required “what did you play this week?”

What games come up?  Ambush, Alea Jacta Est, Tiller’s Squad Battles and Panzer Battles, D&D, Old School Tactical II, Civilization (both the train-wreck that was Civ IV and the glorious righteousness that is Civ 5), GMT’s P∞ program, and console/computer RPGs like Skyrim, Divinity, HALO, and The Division.  We also riff for a bit on Peter Jackson’s LOTR/Hobbit movies, as well as Maltese Falcon and Day of the Jackal.  How do we tie all of that together?  When you figure it out, let us know.

Wait, no Mirth!?  Hell, we oughta just cancel the show without our co-host!

What’s that?  You guys want a GrogCast anyway?  OK, fine.  How about Cyrano and panzerde give us the lowdown on their recent travels to battlefields as far afield as Germantown and Leipzig?  How’s that work for you?  Let’s find out about their trips – What did they learn on the ground that changed their perspectives of their games?  How did their gameplay help get them ready for their trips?  What factors on the ground are unappreciated in the games?

What do we talk about?  Pub Battles, John Tiller’s WWI Squad Battles, multiple wargames from Marlboro and the Age of Reason, a couple of different Marengo games, the original Warfighter game, Jena-Auerstadt, some Napoleonic minis game whose terrain Jim hates, what the hell Brant was doing in East Berlin in 1986, and what glorious things printed catalogs are and why more game companies should publish them.

Mirth co-hosts a rambling discussion with Luke Hughes about the development of the new game Burden of Command and the ideas and inspirations behind the psychological and RPG-like parts of the game.

We’ve previously interviewed Luke about the game here on GrogHeads.  Now you get to listen to him explain it all in more detail.

Holy crap! Yes, Michael – Banzai Cat himself – returns to the show, as he and Mirth join Brant to talk about games that really need their graphics updated, games with superb graphics, and games that do a lousy job of representing actual unit cohesion and chain of command on the battlefield.

What games do we discuss (or at least mention)?  ASL, Liberty Roads, PanzerGrenadier, Orange Crush, Gliders in the Sky, HALO, Tac Air, World at War ’85, TechNo Bowl, FSX, Beat Cop, Last Blitzkrieg, Star Wars Battlefront, Lock ‘n Load Tactical, and, uh, what was that one… Japanese designer…  MMP…  really cool graphics…  if only I had a computer to look it up!

22 September 2017 ~

Big crowd this week: Staggerwing, Mirth, MetalDog, and Cyrano, so we’ve super-sized this episode for you.  We talk about what we’ve played this week, the weirdest or most obscure game in our collections, what’s next to hit the table, an extended riff on high-complexity monsters and whether or not they’re good or bad for the hobby, and how to play one week of Kriegspiel game action over the course of an entire year.

What games do we discuss (or at least mention)?  CNA, War in the Pacific: Admiral’s Edition, Bonaparte at Marengo, Decisive Action, AH’s Robin Hood & Hundred Days’ Battles, Bonaparte at Marengo, Fourth Reich, SPI’s War of the Ring, Pub Battles’ Marengo, Kriegspiel, VG’s Vietnam, DAK II, Civilization IV, JTS’s Campaign: Jena-Auerstadt, Swordbearer, Warehouse 13, King Arthur, Habet Hoc Habet, Kiev to Rostov, Knights of Camelot, GG’s War in the East, Sails of Glory, Empires in Arms, and that might not actually get them all.  Yes, we covered a lot of ground.

@BanzaiCat – “CNA” is short for “Campaign for North Africa”
@BanzaiCat – “GG” is short for “Gary Grigsby’s”
@BanzaiCat – “AH” is short for “Avalon Hill”
