  1. Darrell Hanning says:

Brent’s spin on “what is a wargame” is the closest I’ve heard to being identical to what I’ve maintained on BGG, on multiple occasions. The way I defined it was “A game the primary focus of which is armed conflict between organized factions”. What people want to pick at are, in order, “game”, “focus”, “armed”, “organized”, and “factions”. For myself, answering the question is not about parsing, or generally behaving like the blind men in the room with an elephant. (“I’m feeling a hex grid.””I’m feeling cardboard counters.”) It’s about using the simplest, most empirical meanings of the terms. Obviously, you’re never going to get everyone to agree, but if you ever had a chance at getting them to agree, it isn’t going to be using a shopping list of specific components, or resorting to making “conflict simulation” and “wargame” synonymous.

    • Brant Guillory says:

Woohoo! Someone agrees with me 🙂
(I’ll try not to let it go to my head. But we all know better… )
