Remember the old magazine ads with sketches of the figures? How many of them did you trace with light paper to sketch over top of with your own character creations in the lunchroom at school?

What I remember most about these old print ads (Ral Partha had lots of them too, IIRC) was that I had NO IDEA what the real product would look like. Meaning…while I had a host of RPG’s (D&D, Boothill, Melee, etc), and had a couple of magazines, I had never seen a 25 or 28 mm cast metal figure. Sure, I had lots of airfix 1/72 scale “toy soldiers”, but I had never connected using them to play any of our games. It wasn’t until a kite and hobby store in Calgary started carrying them that I had the “a-ha” moment. And thus went all of my hard-earned cash. (PS – still got many of original Ral Partha figures, too!)
