Scenario 5 Bougainville – Avery Abernethy
In the Bougainville scenario you have to land, advance, build two airfields and then survive the Japanese Counter-Attacks. Your Marines must be aggressive to take the ground and build both landing strips within 20 turns. A large surface fleet naval battle must be won to protect your Marine supply ships.
The Land Battle, continued:
There are a series of attacks and counter-punches around Evansville. Marine forces ended up taking Evansville, retreating and then retaking Evansville three times. Every time the Marines secured the village another wave of Japanese would attack. Fortunately, I was able to execute two fighting retreats without losing any units. Lots of casualties but no units overrun.
Marine artillery was highly effective in disrupting Japanese attacks. My armor crushed the Japanese anytime they caught them in open terrain. I also gained air superiority about turn 10 and never lost it
Understanding the Scenario Objectives is Important:
The AAR is my 3rd attempt at this scenario. My first loss was an idiotic failure to place the supply ships. My 2nd failure was caused by unclear instructions and misunderstanding the game interface. I built the airfields on the wrong 2 hexes. But according the instructions they were built on the “right hexes.”
After searching game forums, I discovered clicking on the question mark beside each victory condition provides very clear instructions.
My last two screen shots provide examples. If a victory conditions are unclear, click on the question mark for a detailed explanation.
