Part 9
In Part 8 we saw the new Count Oberto start a civil war with his twin Step-Brothers, take back Genoa, and start the slow process towards aiming for the Kingdom of Sicily by fabricating claims on Capua. In Part 9 Oberto takes the first step towards kingship, attempts to steady his new realm, and comes up with a plan to avenge his father.
A son, thank God for that, a male heir steadies the vassals and hopefully should shut down my Step-Mother’s plan to kill me.
In the income box we can see there is no money coming in from the feudal lords. I like everyone to pay their fair share – and it’s always a good excuse to raise taxes.
We choose a small taxation rise, we don’t want to upset anyone just yet. It doesn’t necessarily mean it will be accepted by the vassals, they may turn it down yet.
It passes without problem. With this small, extra income Oberto can start building the city and castle improvements that will start bringing the real money in.
We check in on our deadly enemy and Liege, Matilda. She has had two sons now – good news for us, when she dies her demesne will be split between the two boys and we can pick our fight for Independence. I see also two daughters, and a bouncing new boy in the Oberto household. A plan forms.............
A tournament invite from the Big Man – with 50 prestige up for grabs, I can’t afford to say no.
That’s Capua, Napoli, and Salerno now – I have to be careful not to rush here, until I can claim independence from Matilda she’ll simply take the Duchy for herself and I’ll have moved her one step closer to the Kingdom of Sicily instead of me! The Chancellor moves further South to Taranto.
That’s Oberto fabricating a claim for Matilda as her Chancellor. It’s a mix of pride and rage, I’m happy he’s setting fire to the world of diplomacy in Italy but annoyed he’s expanding her horizons.
It seems Count Jordan has finally wrested control of his realm from the rebels, it looks like a perfect time to go wrest it from him! We march to Capua, this time with a respectable looking army.
The separate armies meet in Spoleto, form up as one and come over the mountains into Capua.....................
In Part 10, a new county, a new son-in-law, a new dastardly plot.
