4 May 2018 ~

GrogHeads’ own Airborne Rifles (Joel) and Gunner98 (Bart) discuss their new novel, and the Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations scenarios that inspired it, including their alternate-history timeline that starts to diverge back in 1989, and leads to the shooting war that broke out back in 1994.

Bart tells us all about the scenarios he’s already built, and the ones that are coming soon (WW3 in the Caribbean?), as well as the Northern Fury ones that inspired Joel’s original forum AARs.  Joel talks about the AARs as a starting point, and building a story around them.

When are we going to start seeing the novel(s)?  They’ll tell you all about it when you listen!

2 March 2018 ~

Multiple Chrises and the return of Michael as the co-host as season 6 rolls on, talking about expansions to some games we dig, lipstick-on-a-pig graphics, and AARs that will never get finished.

We talk about Rommel in the Desert, Civ IV and the new expansion, Tales from the Loop, Spearpoint minis, 7 Wonders on the phone (and tabletop!), Scythe and wargames throughout the history of Eastern Europe, a bunch of South China Sea games, and just how many games you really need one any one battle (see also: Waterloo, Gettysburg, The Bulge, and Stalingrad).

And there’s no Mirth quite like Drunk Mirth…  (which leads to the inevitable language warning, too)

Please come back for episode 3 next week!

23 February 2018 ~

The GrogCast is back! The GrogCast is back! The GrogCast is back! The GrogCast is back! (deeeeeeeeeep breath) The GrogCast is back! The GrogCast is back!

Did we mention the new GrogCast season is here?

Jim O and Vance kick off the festivities with a discussion of recent Kickstarter projects like UBoat, Gloomhaven, DVG’s varied projects, and (sigh) Up Front, as well as Kickstarter “exclusives.”  We discuss The Gamer’s Armory wall of ASL (see pics below) and learning a COIN game compared to other ‘programmed’ rulebooks.  Vance tells us all about the new Civ6 expansion.  We also talk about keeping key games in print, and why Brant shouldn’t being the guy giving business advice to anyone.

Also, please spare a prayer for the wife of Andy Martin, the composer and performer of our theme music, whose wife tragically passed away in February after a multi-year battle with breast cancer.

20 October 2017 ~

We wrap up Season 5 of the GrogCast with some discussions of games that just couldn’t scratch that gaming itch, games that need graphics overhauls, and the oldest dice in our collections, along with the required “what did you play this week?”

What games come up?  Ambush, Alea Jacta Est, Tiller’s Squad Battles and Panzer Battles, D&D, Old School Tactical II, Civilization (both the train-wreck that was Civ IV and the glorious righteousness that is Civ 5), GMT’s P∞ program, and console/computer RPGs like Skyrim, Divinity, HALO, and The Division.  We also riff for a bit on Peter Jackson’s LOTR/Hobbit movies, as well as Maltese Falcon and Day of the Jackal.  How do we tie all of that together?  When you figure it out, let us know.

13 October 2017 ~

Wait, no Mirth!?  Hell, we oughta just cancel the show without our co-host!

What’s that?  You guys want a GrogCast anyway?  OK, fine.  How about Cyrano and panzerde give us the lowdown on their recent travels to battlefields as far afield as Germantown and Leipzig?  How’s that work for you?  Let’s find out about their trips – What did they learn on the ground that changed their perspectives of their games?  How did their gameplay help get them ready for their trips?  What factors on the ground are unappreciated in the games?

What do we talk about?  Pub Battles, John Tiller’s WWI Squad Battles, multiple wargames from Marlboro and the Age of Reason, a couple of different Marengo games, the original Warfighter game, Jena-Auerstadt, some Napoleonic minis game whose terrain Jim hates, what the hell Brant was doing in East Berlin in 1986, and what glorious things printed catalogs are and why more game companies should publish them.
