“Sir, that Russian boat has turned on the afterburners!”
My weapons officer was getting excited – the Poseidon P-8 had just launched half a dozen Mark 54 torpedoes after a Russian submarine and they were quickly closing. Meanwhile the P-8 was returning to station and busy dropping a web (plotted around the sub) of DICASS Sonobuoys to track the sub in case it should manage to lose all of its chasers (it would not). To the east of the Russian sub lies in wait an Astute class hunter sub – just in case the P-8 failed at its task. Passing over all the action is a squadron of F-35’s on its way to patrol an area to the north. The Russians had been getting feisty in the GIUK gap and it is now NATO’s turn to make a showing of force.
