GrogHeads Advanced Research on Projects Advisory #48

frontier wars 728x90 KS

So the 4th of the July, we’re bringing 4 excellent GARPA possibilities. No, we won’t bring you 19 on the 19th.

BOAR, MBT Expansion (GMT Games)
203 Orders to date – not there yet

GMT’s modern-day tank shootout MBT has the usual suspects: the US 7th Army and the GSFG. But there’s plenty of tank-blasting goodness up on the Lüneberger Heide where the British Army of the Rhine was facing down an equally vast array of Soviet forces. The MBT games are scaled at the squad and individual vehicle level, ensuring tight focus on tactical shootouts where a bayonet charge is always possible. MBT is on p500 itself, but while you’re over there, get an order in for BAOR, too, and refight the whole shebang back in the late ‘80s.

Through the Ages (Eagle Games)
$44k of $20k, ends 22 July 2014

This one is an odd Kickstarter campaign. Every add-on, or stretch goal is a complete game. It’s almost as though Eagle Games is just trying to clear out the warehouse by giving you a game for pretty much, well, anything. Add-on a purchase? Have a game. Don’t even want Through the Ages Pledge $5, add on a few purchases, and poof you’re eligible for all the stretch goals. Oh, wait, you did want the game? Sure. Have another one to go with it. By the time you’re done, you’ve got Through The Ages, several Roll Through The Ages games, Attack, Conquest of the Empire, Struggle of Empires, Outre Mare, Warriors, Bacchus, and if you’re not careful, a Partridge in a Pear Tree. It’s $60 if you just want the game, but if you plunk down $110, you’ll get a game store’s worth of stuff by the time it’s all said and done, so go get your pledge in now!

Fire At Will! (Masquerade Games)
$1300 of $12k, ends 13 August 2014

Hey, airship combat! It’s a card-driven game of dueling ship captains whose command cards determine the action on each turn. The art looks like the Monitor vs Merrimack in the sky, and the card layout makes it clear it’s a fast-and blasting duel game of head-to-head combat.   Be fast. Be accurate. But be careful or your cannons might explode on your decks. Most importantly, be a part of this Kickstarter campaign and be happy you got a cool card game out of the deal.

Wolsung Steampunk Skirmish Game Expansion (Micro Art Studio)
$53k of $15k, ends 19 July 2014

So the base of the Wolsung game system is a 28mm minis game that’s set in a fantasy-style 19th century setting. The Kickstarter for the expansion includes all manner of pledge levels and rewards. You can get figures, dice, rulebooks, playing cards, or any combination of the above. If you’re looking to jump into the game as a newbie, you’ll want the $120 level. It sounds steep, but it gets you the dice, 2 rulebooks, playing cards, and 2 starter factions of minis. By the time you add in all the unlocked stretch goals, you’ve got full-color stat cards for all your characters, and another dozen or so minis. Add-ons include full-color battle mats, terrain models, any of the figures in the other sets. There’s a lot of game in here, so go pledge your support and join the fun.
