Star Commander

Found this earlier, a 4X game, seems to be complete and implemented rather well. It's free, indie and about 80MB.
Only problem I had was that the .MSI download would not install on my XP SP3 machine, I just used 7-Zip and extracted to folder and ran the .EXE from there without any problems.

Trying to prove the existence of God with the Bible is the same thing as trying to prove the existence of Orcs using the Lord of the Rings books.

Well worth the trouble, combat reminds me of MOO2, for a freebie it is definitely a time sponge as it is very easy to get into once you have got the hang of it, I shall be keeping an eye out for anymore from these folks, with a little more polish and expansion this could quite happily be a retail release, there are some very good ideas in this, quite original.

Regards 7-Zip, I just right hand buttoned on the .MSI as I opted to put 7-Zip on the context menu when I installed it, didn't open the archive with it, just selected the 'extract to "star_commander/"' option. I am using 7-Zip 9.20 if that helps.

Thanks Darkspire. Installer worked fine on Windows 7 laptop. Game looks interesting and even has a basic ship design feature!

I has no problem installing it under Win 8.0.  It's definitely a time sink with some good ideas, but has some real balance issues unless I'm just not getting it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but to "claim" a star system, you have to send a Constructor and then build a Star Base, but Constructors are ridiculously expensive - $6000 when you are bringing in maybe $50 a day at game's start.

That sounds about right, I put it on the biggest galaxy with a young setting to get to grips with it so that I had more resources to play with. It helps to match the commanders to the starbase and in turn try to make a match with what is in a system, like a commander with extra income from mining who also has research skills, there a few things in the tech tree as well to increase income. Also useful at game start is going into options and speeding up the turns so that you just click to stop when something is built or someone is ready to command a ship etc, on that note I have noticed that folks just left at a starbase with an academy in the sector seem to level up and gain new skills faster. I can't seem to find anyway to upgrade the ships, you can upgrade them with new tech when you a build a new one but can not upgrade it once built?
