That new camo scheme is highly effective.

I've been reading up a bit on warsaw pact cold war tanks (e.g. t-54/55, t-62, t-64, t-72's).  It really sounds cramped in one of those things.

Question for any of the metal heads on the forum - have you ever had the chance to ride in one of them during or after the Cold War?  What was your personal opinion.  What I'm reading about 3 man crews makes it sound like it was not really ideal for maintenance on the go.

I was licensed on the T72 when on active duty - we were doing some work in TEXCOM that required us to pootle around in a few Russian vehicles for a few weeks.  I drove the T72 long enough to get licensed, and then went back to my real job :)

It's SMALL.  I mean, really, really tiny in there.  They used to cap the size of their crew members at a certain height, and I think I was 1-2 inches taller and I still felt cramped.  I can only imagine what a 6'2" guy would think about them

I drove a T72 on an exchange in Uzbekistan. Definitely cramped, especially the turret (I'm 6'1") but I came away with respect for the equipment. But then again, I'm an infantryman, so what do I know  ;).

Also, all the Russian vehicles I drove (T72, BMP2, BTR70) were manual transmission, and whereas US vehicles are all automatic. It was interesting learning how to shift gears in a 40 ton tank with an Uzbek sergeant who didn't speak English crouched on the glacis next to me trying to coach me.

all those years that NATO made the Soviet tank corp seem 10 meters tall and the reality was that they were Gus sized.

Thanks for the feedback all.  Always a treat to see others kit I guess :)  I dug up an old video on Youtube that compared the M60A1 at the time to a T-62.  It mentioned some details as having only 3 men to do the same maintenance tasks that 4 tankers usually did . This would apparently put more wear & stress on the crewmen.  I can only imagine the effects of being inside one for long.

Airborne, did the Uzbek share his opinions with you on his ride?

Knowing the size restrictions, I had thought about bringing up Gus, but that's just cherry picking.  ;)

Well, my Russian wasn't all that great and his English was not-existant, but he was obviously proud of his tank and a little less than happy about letting a bunch of Americans grind up his transmission.

I have not even a thimble of experience with climbing around armored vehicles like you guys do, except for the Bradley and the gunner's seat of a Cobra. I'm 6'4" and holy hell, you have to be Gus-level stature to endure that dollhouse of an armored vehicle. As for the Cobra, I couldn't even fit in the gunner seat. Back then I was only 195 pounds, too.  :-\

The M-60 I worked on seemed to be pretty roomy.
