Suddenly NC State's loss to UNC-G doesn't look quite so bad

UNC does not practice during final exams.  Their first game or two a after finals is usually horrid.  Well known if you look at games in the third week of December.

dude - it was Wofford.
You should be able to roll out the ball and just say "go get 'em boys!" and win by 10.

It's not quite App St-beating-Michigan-in-football, but it was certainly on the level with Tampa beating NC State in hoops in the 80s

Went to an Auburn's Women's game yesterday that was one of the more interesting games I've seen them play in a couple of years.  They started out just dead cold but playing good defense.  Florida was hitting their shots and Auburn fell behind in the first quarter by 20.  Then Florida started having trouble with the Auburn press and Auburn cut the lead to 10 by the end of the first period.

By half-time it was very tight with a very narrow lead.  But Florida was getting tired.  Auburn and Florida were each playing basically 7 people, but Auburn's conditioning was clearly superior - especially at forwards and Center.

By the end of the 3rd period Auburn had a less than 10 point but sustained lead.  Florida was not moving their feet on defense.

In the fourth period Auburn outscored Florida by 25 points and won by more than 30.

Auburn did not get discouraged or change their game plan when their shots did not fall.  Florida does not have the conditioning program to play 7 people against a team that presses the length of the court the entire game.

Auburn does not have the talent to be in the top quarter of the league (those teams will compete for the national title again).  But they might be able to finish in the top third of the league.  Maybe.  Still, this is the most talented squad they have had in a decade.

Go NCSU!  They beat Satan's team!  Mooooooo!

Auburn beat 2 ranked teams this week and may be ranked next week.  They are hitting their free throws, not turning the ball over and (usually) playing pretty good defense.  For being so short, they are rebounding very well.  This is all without 2 starters who have not been ruled eligible.  Strangest AU season I've ever seen in 30 years of having season tickets.

yeah, if you're ranked #2, don't play NC State :)

Auburn's Men are ranked for the first time in more than a decade.

Auburn is 4-0, 16-1 and leads the SEC.  This is after their best two bigs are not eligible to play this season.

They are short and not very talented.  They are hitting their free throws, not turning the ball over, playing good defense, hustling the entire game and not giving up.  They rely on the 3-ball, which will come back to kill them from game to game.  Their performance is due to execution.   They have come from more than 10 back at halftime four times to win this year.

So far, this is the most unbelievable season I've seen in 29 years of being a season ticket holder.  It is almost like they are the anti-Auburn (free throws, and good defense).

Have they played UK or FL yet?

NC St is 3-0 vs top 25 teams. 8-5 vs everyone else

No.  But they beat Tennessee in Knoxville and Arkansas at home.  Both were ranked.  Auburn had not won at Tennessee in around a decade.  They beat Ole Miss at home who beat Florida.  Auburn has played through a very rough part of their schedule.

I don't think Auburn can defend against twin big men playing a high-low interior passing game.  Auburn is winning through execution and forcing other teams to beat them.  They don't have much of a margin for mistakes.

Auburn will be either first or second in the SEC after the first third of the season is done with a 5-1 record.  They lost at Alabama when they shot horribly everywhere including the free throw line, but still finished close.

Today after shooting 25% in the first half and being down by as much as 16 points, they came back in the second half and won by 14 over Georgia.  Auburn shot over 90% from the free throw line, had a very positive turnover ratio, and did not get utterly destroyed on the boards.  They had some defensive lapses in the first half, but Georgia mostly shot amazingly well from long range.  Both teams reverted to their averages and Auburn won.

I came home and read the write-up and the professional sports journalists caught almost everything I did.  The only thing that the story did not emphasize was Heron being scoreless in the first half after two quick fouls coming back with a roar in the 2nd half.  Sports journalism = quality journalism (at least in the USA).

The SEC has 18 conference games for each team.  We are a third of the way through the schedule and Auburn is 5-1.

What is amazing to me after 30 years of having season tickets is Auburn hits their free throws, especially down the stretch.  Yesterday against Georgia they had a 10 point lead with 4 minutes left and started delaying.  I was pretty calm.  They hit all of their free throws during the last couple of minutes.  In previous years that almost never happened.  No lead was safe.  The foul line was a psychological terror for the fans.  It is amazing to have the team actually playing fundamentally sound ball.

NBA All-Star rosters were announced, and rather than straight conference affiliation, they had Lebron and Steph pick teams as captains.

Russell Westbrook got picked as part of Team Lebron, and apparently was pretty chuffed about being picked last for his team, until someone pointed out to him that the list was released alphabetically   :2funny:

Auburn simply crushed LSU at home.  Amazing to someone who has had season tickets for 30 years, the cheapest ticket on stubhub to the game was $75.  Auburn has surpassed their conference (7-1) and total win (19-2) totals for last year, and we are not quite halfway through the SEC regular season.  If they win their next game, they will be on top of the SEC at the midway point.

This has been an unbelievable season.  Auburn's best bigs both got 4 fouls on them with 15 minutes to go and they still cruised through the game although LSU started a 6-10 and a 6-11 players. Their next game is at Ole Miss which usually plays very tough at home.

LSU is still digging out of their mental sinkhole from last year with their new coach.
