GMT's design blog is talking about this nifty looking WWII game that starts 6 years before WWII, and let's you change the conditions under which the war starts - if it starts at all.

QuoteCataclysm's 1933 start date allows players more latitude to craft alternate strategies. Opportunity costs become apparent. France forgoing the Maginot Line would allow it to build a mobile army or a stronger air force. Maybe Italy could construct an aircraft carrier, but at the cost of not refitting its old battleships. Germany could have a go at building a strategic air force. Russia could launch a big navy, if it wanted to. Japan could make an ideal force for going north against Russia—or south against China and the European colonies.

Cataclysm would let players freely explore any course of action within national limits. The game would be agnostic if a strategy was shrewd or foolish. The incentives for conquest (resource areas) would be laid out on a simple political map. There would be no script to follow. Players would be little more than strategic amateurs chasing prizes, much like their historical predecessors.

QuoteCataclysm is not Axis & Allies on Steroids, It is Third Reich on Quaaludes.

that was kind of my thought...  this one's likely already in the "must buy" category for me.

GMT certainly knows how to get me to hand over my money to them on a consistent basis.

I think they were demoing that at WBC. There was definitely some kind of Axis and Allies lookalike games being played for several days.

Waiting on this one to see if it ends up too simple.

bayonetbrant

Even if it's a bit simple, just the idea that you could deal with the lead-in to the war is kind of neat.

Of course if this is just now hitting P500, it may be a year or more before we get it into our hands.

It might be, but it's also been in dev for a few years, and it's got some buzz building from open playtests at WBC and other cons.
