Pulling this question out of the best space game thread in order not to hijack that one....but I have some questions concerning this game series and was curious if folks knew the answers.

1)  If I understand correctly, the initial version of these games were released on DOS but at some point they were released for Windows 95/98, is that correct?

2)  Which specific version of each game would you need to buy if I wanted to buy those Windows versions?  Seems to be a lot of different names such as collector's edition, trilogy, etc.

3)  Has anyone got the windows version to actually work on Windows 8?  Any special trick or software required?

4)  It sounds like the Windows requires a Joystick and does not support gamepad, which I would expect for an older game.  When it says Joystick, does it mean a flight stick like X52 or something?

5)  I believe the maximum resolution 640x480....kind of wondering if it is really playable in that mode nowadays...unless there is a mod.

Thanks for your help....kind of got the bug to try and find and play these, depending on the answers:)

Star Wars: X-Wing Alliance was 95/98, yes.

Star Wars: TIE Fighter and Star Wars: X-Wing were both DOS/Windows 9.x.

X-Wing Alliance has a rather significant mod community following: http://www.xwaupgrade.com/

Overall though it really depends on the title and what you want out of it. Check these links out.

Wish I could answer your other questions. While I've admired it from afar (I played all of 'em back in the 90s), I never got motivated enough these days to go try to get them to work on my computer. I like lurking on the above sites occasionally just to see if something simple pops up.

I say these games are best left as a good memory. In the end, I don't think it will be worth the time and effort to get them running.  As good as they were, they have been surpassed.

You very well might be right....just the nostalgia of playing a good star wars space fighter game got the best of me.....why can't this stuff be made modern, darn licenses:)

Well Disney has it all now, so we'll probably get Tie Fighter: Princess Edition at some point.

IIRC there were some updated graphics mods around.
here be some:

this looks pretty good:

it would seem that X Wing Alliance is the preferred game to use for the mods.  makes sense as it was the last game with the best engine.

Jarhead - Yeah. You're probably right.

Gus - I use sweatpants with flannel shorts to soak up my crotch sweat.

Banzai Cat - There is no "partial credit" in grammar. Like anal sex. It's either in, or it's not.

Mirth - We learned long ago that they key isn't to outrun Star, it's to outrun Gus.

Martok - I don't know if it's possible to have an "anti-boner"...but I now have one.

Gus - Celery is vile and has no reason to exist. Like underwear on Star.

Bardolph

I got X-Wing Vs Tie working on this computer under Win 8.0 a while back. Cannot recall the exact process but I used my original CD and here are the sites I bookmarked at the time:

It was worth it just to hear "Don't touch anything until told to!"

Star hears that on every date.

Yup.

I attempted to play them again back around '99-'00 and I came to the same conclusion.
