You do know that Ars Magica has been around about 25 years as a tabletop RPG, right?

http://rpggeek.com/rpgfamily/1029/ars-magica

It was one of the original "gritty realism" RPGs from the 80s that was developed as the "anti-D&D"
Those games all seemed to proliferate right around the time the D&D cartoon was on Saturday mornings

And the thing is, with US Postal rates jumping up again, I don't know how long they're going to be able to keep their shipping rates as low as they are. Wouldn't be a big deal if they had wider distribution, but no game store in Canada stocks it (at least so far as I know).  :(

Same here. At the moment, there seems to be non of the games retailers in the UK who are keeping the game, and the shipping costs to bring it in are prohibitive.

Numpty!

Yes, I faintly grasp the concept... but what I want to know is the why of it? Not, I assume, the game itself, but the prohibitive cost of adding all the new bits on. And, if, as I suspect, you are like me, you hate having a base game without all the expansions?

It's a really good game, but the lack of any Canadian availability makes it a bit of a pain. Also, I have a few heavier games that take up a load of space as it is that only get played every now and again. So do I really need another one, especially when this other one keeps expanding and growing expensively?

On top of that, a friend of mine has been getting in to Dust Tactics/Warfare from Fantasy Flight. It's a simply system, but it's a lot of fun and the costs compared to other minis games are pretty damn good. So if that's going to be something I can actively play a bit more frequently, I may as well swap over to that.

How much? And can I better the offer?

I'm still in the early haggling stages with him. I'll shoot you a PM.  :D

I know. Reaper was tough to turn away from, too.

But I have always lusted after Dwarven Forge stuff. What is saving me right now is the fact that I haven't actually broken down how much I get for what. I'm sure it's good. Just not sure how great a deal it is.

The newest GARPA included Tiny Epic Kingdoms, the little 4x game that could.

Back then, they were at $160k funded of $15k that they were after.

With 3 hours to go, they've got $275k raised.  Yep, they're 1833% of the funding they sought.  Holy cow.

Met the guys developing Albion's Legacy here at Origns last night quite by accident.
They found your GARPA piece on their game and were thrilled that someone had posted about it. They mentioned it in one of their KS updates mentioning Grogheads as well.

That fold up terrain looks interesting but I have a feeling I ruin it while trying to assemble.  Either way I like the concept.

NEW GARPA TODAY!

I do have to say that "The Attackening" is one of my favorite new game names.

I can't believe that Monty doesn't already have 8 copies of Shadows Over Normandie.

It was from The Wargamer magazine back in '82; it's a broad remake of that game

Some good stuff there. Clockwork Wars, and Konigsberg 45 look like good candidates for a port to the PC/Mac. Konigsburg 45 looks like a simplified version of an old favourite - To the Wolf's Lair - by Peoples Wargames (not that I've played it for years, but still a very good operational level wargame).

They did some good games as I recall. I bought Black Sea, Black Death, Aachen, and To the Wolf's Lair - all good stuff. IIRC they're all Jack Radey games - a bit complex, but definitely more detail in the combat than you get in most boardgames at the scale. Whilst sometimes heavy going, there is no doubt for me that the attention to detail made up for that in large part. The games were also VERY well researched. The big downer was ever finding a local opponent who wanted to play them. :( BTW, I don't know if anyone's noticed but in all of the HOI games - don't know about HOI4 - there is no beach to land at Novorossiysk - which is the whole point of the land/sea operation modelled in Black Sea, Black Death.

OT - the future President Brezhnev fought in the battle at the Malya Zemlya (tr. the little land) - it was the diversionary landing, the main effort was a disaster, and eventually it became the main amphibious event. IIRC it was eventually relieved a couple of months later, and has the dubious fame of having had more explosive fired in anger into it's toehold per square metre, than in any other action on the Eastern front - scary when you think about battles like Stalingrad, Leningrad, Warsaw and Buda-Pest :o.
