Title: 4vengers 4ever (i.e. Endgame)
Post by: JasonPratt on May 03, 2018, 11:48:06 AM
May 3rd release in US 2019, April 30th in UK / other minor nations.  ::)

I figured it was time to start a thread since we've got release date(s), but take the thread title with a grain of salt: while it would sort of make sense from a cheesy marketing perspective (and it's borrowing an actual Avengers story title), the Russos say they aren't releasing the real title because it would spoil the story for "speaking to the heart of the Avengers" or something like that.

Until then, 4vengers 4ever will be my headcanon title.

Meanwhile:

Yes. Even Thanos is watching them to see what comes next.

Yes - don't watch them if you haven't seen Avengers Infinity War yet.

I would argue not to view them at all. It'll take some of the magic out of the next movie having other people's theories on the content. We get fed enough in the run up to a film with trailers and TV spots "wtf are they and wtf did they come from and wtf are they relevant to "a movie"?)

Of course your free to do so - but I think shit like this just feeds into the "I need it now" culture. It used to be that you might talk with your pals about it - but you choose to. Nowadays you can't go anywhere on the internet without spoilers hitting you in the face.

JP - I definitely think this should've been under the Infinity Wars Spoilers thread (it's not IW but it is related to it's content) or at least have A4 spoilers subject so people know. I know the videos say so right away, but just the still on the first one is a spoiler in a way.

You maybe the last person in the Western World to see it. But that's OK. Then we can start talking about it for real.  :peace:

Ha, well you guys have a spoiler thread (which I appreciate and have managed to avoid thus far).

My only concern are memes. iFunny (a repository for user-made memes, which I have on my phone as an app for the occasional laugh) has a history of slipping spoilers in. I've already seen a meme numerous times with something fading away in a comical fashion but I've no idea what this is referring to nor do I want to know before I see it.

The asshats in there, though, let leak a few years back when The Force Awakens that Han died. I read a comment on a meme that was totally not related to Star Wars that said, "Han dies in the movie." So far I've not seen anything like that, but then again I've been staying away from the comments section too.

Han does not die in this movie.  ;)

Yes, I thought it would be redundant to tag those as spoilery since the hosts quickly say so themselves AND SINCE THE BASIC CONCEPT OF MAKING GUESSES AND OTHERWISE TALKING ABOUT AVENGERS 4 CANNOT HELP BEING SPOILERY!  ::)

But yes, there are spoilers in the guesses about Av4 based on what we already know from Av3 and other sources.

On the other hand, the topic is distinct from talking about what happens only in Av3, for which of course we have a spoiler thread already. I did seriously think about putting Av4 discussion/guess videos there, but then I figured I'd hear complaints about those not being discussion of Av3. So...  O:-)

I actually agree with JD that there's a good argument for avoiding even making guesses about Av4 next year. But those videos came with the news, which I hadn't heard up to then, that Av4 will definitely drop next year around the same time (as part of finishing out the 10th year of the MCU), so that's news in itself even if no one goes farther. It also suggests we aren't going to have a true Phase 4, but only two or maybe three films until then.

I think they should bring back Gamora so she and the Hulk can get together and make some little green babies. Nothing would be cuter than a tiny Hulk in diapers.... eating an Ewok.  :bd:

In the comics, he does have a son (the Hulkling) from a rather Gamoresque wife and queen, though she was grey as I recall. Corie or something like that. Also, I think his son is gay? Wait, Hulk has two sons from Corie or Corella or whatever her name was. It's confusing; I need to catch up on continuity.

Also, he married a blonde green-skinned queen named... oh gosh, what was her name, it was a famous storyline by Harlan Ellison back decades ago... not Jocasta (that's Ultron's or maybe Dr. Doom's robot daughter, I forget.) Something with a J. A somewhat throwaway enemy threw the Hulk into the microverse, where he found a barbarianeque world whose wizard-techs were able to solve his split personality problem. {checking around} Jarella! I don't think they had any kids, but they would have been little green babies for sure!

Ashy thread NECRO-RISE!!

Not much new in the final trailer from the prior trailer, though delivered in a different order. Avenger neo-classical space suits are shown -- worth noting that they're in the walking scene which didn't have the suits in prior trailers. First shot of the Unified Hulk (in the space suit), matching toy art marketing. The post-trailer CapMar snippet felt reaaaaalllllyyyy forced. But mostly the trailer focuses on the legacy characters (aside from Banner/Hulk, for what I suppose are obvious reasons -- don't reveal much of the Hulk yet.)

I noticed Vision wasn't in the clip except.... the very last scene there's someone standing with Romanov. Could be Nebula, but it might be Vision too, kind of looks like him. I know, he was destroyed in Infinity Wars but he was a cyborg so they could have rebuilt him or something. You gotta think Cap or Stark will buy it in this one, maybe both.  :'(

Curiously, this is the final trailer and we still have zero idea what or who the Avengers will even be fighting a month from now. Other than Thanos somehow.

That's some close-held cards!

I also just noticed the scene with the Statue of Liberty is wrong. The statue is surrounded by a port with ships docked around it instead of on an island by itself.  :o   So.... maybe an alternate N.Y.C. ? Or maybe Thanos just stole the damned thing and put it where he wanted it.

I took it as being a beacon of hope now that half the world’s population wiped out. What i want is the time lapse to the trailer vs the snap. Seems like there has been some significant time passing.

Just got back from seeing it and, DAMN, what a ride! Great film, probably the best of the MCU films. Lots of humor, sad scenes, action and great special effects. Lots of familiar faces from all the other movies too.

Not sure I liked what they did with Thor, nor with the Hulk but I LOVE the homage the film pays to Cap and Ironman. Great fight at the end which one-ups' the battle of Wakanda in Infinity Wars. No end scenes so you don't need to bother staying to watch for them.

Thanos nearly steals the movie, again, when he does finally show. A tad predictable in places but that doesn't take away from the vast majority of the movie you WON'T see coming. This movie is a superb tribute to 10 years of Marvel movie making.  I'd say a 9 outta10. Quit reading this and go see it!  :bd:

Just got back from seeing it with Dad and the Bro. Odds are good I'll get to see it again next week with Niecemus Prime (unsure if Microniece wants to see it, at least on a big screen). Mental note that I should try to edit down a less raunchy version of GotG1&2 for the nieces.

um...... Fraternally Anticipated Questions?

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GO AFTER THANOS?

Ten minutes, and then that's done. Next...

HA HA HA, YEAH, RIGHT, NICE TRY! BUT SERIOUSLY--

Okay, you don't want that answer, I'll try this. This film isn't about them going after Thanos. In fact, after the first ten minutes they never once try again.

--- YOU WEREN'T KIDDING?!

Nope.

---WHAT IS THIS FILM EVEN ABOUT?!

Roughly the first hour is a drama about dealing with the after-effects of the previous Avengers movie. (Minimal spoilers for anyone who hasn't yet seen or heard about the previous Avengers movie, in which case you should go watch that and then come back.)

Roughly the second hour is about fatally breaking the plot of the MCU in several ways while explicitly denying that they could even do so and also while planning to keep from breaking the plot of the MCU which the movie pretends they succeed at mainly because--

---WAIT, WHAT??! ....IS THIS SOME KIND OF COMPLAINT ABOUT CAPTAIN MARVEL BEING IN THE FILM!?

No. I will say that, as far as I can tell she doesn't break the film. She acts snotty and entitled, so she's in character, and the rest of the cast do their best to ignore her and otherwise to be grateful she's willing to help. And she makes one big contribution to the film which shows off how overpowered she is when the writers want her to be. Okay, to be fair, two important contributions, one at the beginning, and one at the end. (The mid-credit sequence from her film doesn't occur in this film, but the results of it do, which confused Bro and me for a minute.) Otherwise, she interacts with the plot as little as possible. She does contribute to the fight at the end in some ways that other characters could and do also easily contribute. I suspect she fills in for the Hulk at one point in the fight -- once the main fight starts, he does almost nothing except a little background action. His contributions as the Hulk per se are minimal, aside from one non-fight important duty which they try to set up as only the Hulk being able to do but which as far as I can tell Thor could have probably done. Anything else he does is all Banner. This isn't bad, but as a fan of the Unified Hulk I was disappointed. He's very much a gentle, inoffensive giant in this film who (they go out of their way to comically show) isn't up to fighting anyone anymore.

THAT'S ALL VERY WHATEVER, BUT GETTING BACK TO DANVERS, IS SHE CLEARLY BEING SET UP TO LEAD THE MCU AND THE AVENGERS GOING FORWARD?

Not as far as this movie goes. I really wouldn't mind if she was written and performed well. But she isn't and she isn't. Larson still plays her as an arrogant sociopath whom we're only told is a great character (and not even in this movie!) It's a waste of a great opportunity. It would be better if, like the other great characters in the franchise, she was written so that her arrogant sociopathy was intended as such and the movie was working with the dramatic interest of that character. But that ain't happening.

SO WHO'S LEADING THE MCU AND THE AVENGERS GOING FORWARD?!?

I'm honestly unsure, aside from being told by the producers that Captain Marvel is because she's the bestest nicest funniest strongest woman evarrrr. Being gaslit by the writers, inside and outside the films, is grating, but fortunately she has like 20 lines in the film, and maybe 15 minutes screen time. She doesn't ruin the movie, and is absent from most of it.

SO NO GRRRL POWR SCENES?

There is a flagrant one, which is rumored to be setting up an all-female Avengers movie (A-Force, I think it was called in the comics as part of a what-if storyline). With Larson as director. I have no confidence this will be of any quality. I would have appreciated the girl-power sequence a lot more if I didn't also know the hostility behind it.

OKAY THIS IS DEPRESSING. ANY OTHER DEPRESSING OR SAD THINGS YOU CAN TALK ABOUT WITHOUT OVER SPOILERS?

Not really, no. Fewer characters than I thought actually died. Everyone who died before the snap stayed dead (strictly speaking -- I'm not spoiling anything by now to reveal that all the characters who died from the snap came back. I mean, duh, Black Panther earned over a billion dollars gross, of course he's coming back.)

WAIT, WHAT? WHAT SNAP?!

This comes from not following my instructions earlier. Anyway, despite the time stone being the time stone (and ditto the soul stone) certain dead characters are impossible to bring back to life. This doesn't keep the storyline from fatally breaking the MCU anyway, but the writers painted themselves into a corner and I suspect going forward the fatal cracks will just be ignored. Unless they can be mined for convenient story interests. (I'm also not spoiling things by now to point out, perhaps in topical connection with this, that we can expect a Loki TV series on the new Disney streaming service.)

SO LOKI COMES BACK, EVEN THOUGH HE DIED PRE-SNAP, OR YOU'RE SAYING HE WAS NEVER DEAD AT ALL?!

The answer to one or both of those compounded questions is no.

.....WE'RE CONFUSED...

As all things should be.

JUST TELL US THERE'S MUCH BUTT KICKING ACTION!

Not really, until the final fight sequence. It is satisfying but unlike what you may have heard, it does not last an hour. I didn't time it, but my guess is around 30 minutes. This is very much a 4-1/2 hour movie (not counting credits) broken into two parts, sort of like Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace put together.

IS THE FINAL FIGHT LIKE NOTHING WE'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE?!

It is very much like Wakanda but somewhat moreso.

DOES IT HAPPEN IN WAKANDA?

No. It's in a hellish landscape; I think New Jersey? But I repeat myself.  >:D

DOES THE FILM'S PLOT RELY ON SHEER COINCIDENCE?

Yes. A raccoon inadvertently saves the universe. The raccoon is not named Rocket, and does not talk. Rocket continues to be great in all his scenes by the way. .....I might be thinking of a rat. Our jaws dropped at how hacky the plot convenience was, and so my mind may be retching trying not to clearly remember in order to protect my sanity. I choose to remember it as a raccoon because then it's kind of funny, in a meta sort of way.

DOES THE FILM TIE UP LOOSE PLOT ENDS INVOLVING ULTRON?

Not even a little bit. The hints that Thanos somehow created Ultron through the Mind Stone, and that Ultron was trying to save the world from Thanos in his own twisted crazy way, remain only hints in that particular film, never to be visited again now or ever.

AW. --YOU KIND OF SOUND LIKE YOU KIND OF DON'T LIKE THE MOVIE?

Oh I do like it. It is not the end-all, be-all, but it has a lot of good things going for it, mostly dealing with the character drama and humor (which in this film is a lot rarer than in previous MCU films, appropriate to the topic).

DO YOU REGARD IT AS BETTER THAN INFINITY WAR?

Each of them do some things better than the other. I wasn't as gushy about IW as some people, so they rank about the same to me.

DID YOU CRY AT ANY POINT?

I think I was supposed to, but I only really teared up at the Avengers Assemble moment, which is indeed most triumphant.  :smitten:

ANY GUEST STARS YOU WEREN'T EXPECTING?

Several, some for a few moments, others for longer. There's a young man standing by himself in an informal curtain-call scene near the end of the film, whom none of us could place even though he looked familiar. Was that Zemo?? -- the Andrew Garfield Parker in a crazy cameo??!? This is something I want to learn soon, because it's driving my OD-C a little nuts. [Edited to add: it was a rat after all! Wait, sorry, wrong edit.] [Edited to add: he was the boy from near Chattanooga, Tennessee, who acted as Stark's sidekick for about 1/3rd of Iron Man 3. Nifty! Too bad he can't teach Jarvis anymore, which side of TN Chattanooga and its environs is on....]

MID OR END CREDIT SEQUENCE?

Mid-credit sequence is a great curtain call of all the main and secondary characters and actors. End sequence is just (ten or eleven) bangs of a hammer on an anvil, which is surely a callback to Stark forging the Mark I armor (if not also some other things).

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD--The young guy standing by himself confused me too. I thought maybe it was Quicksilver but surely he would be standing with his sister, not by himself. Turns out according to one of the YouTube videos I watched later, it was the little kid from Ironman 3 that Stark had gone back and forth with in the scene they were together in. Don't know his name. The movie did leave me unsettled about the future of the MCU but the only thing we can do now is wait and see what they come up with.

I really liked it - with some minor caveats.

Seen it twice now. The first time I left underwhelmed but I put that down to me trying to second guess everything - who dies - how they die - when they die - what's going to happen on this story, what I think will happen at this part between these characters. Not to mention all the speculation that's been kicking around since Infinity War. It completely ruined the movie for me.

Second time was much, much better.

I have some fundamental issues with super hero stuff sometimes - not just this film - but overall, it was a ride and a half.

Anyone know where they got the Gauntlet idea? Have a look...

I have a theory about what the plot was supposed to be, but I'll put it behind spoilers.

: show
A lot of the time-travel plot breakage would be fixed -- not all of it but a lot -- if Tony

(a) actually sent Thanos and his army back to his own time, which just looked like ashing them (this would also explain Gamora's absence better);

(b) erased most of their memory so Thanos couldn't use his gained knowledge, including to wipe/reset the universe instead of his original plan to just kill half (but left a little memory of Stark being his ultimate downfall, thus explaining the "burdened with knowledge" exchange).

At that point, he could have sent the stones back as part of the package, too, but either that would require a second snap which he wasn't in condition to do, similar to Thanos having to recover enough to destroy the stones with a second snap -- or...

(c) he left the stones for Steve to take back so that Steve would have an excuse to use the time machine to go to the late 40s and live happily ever after. (Although there's a hint that he didn't actually marry Carter, since he didn't want to confirm who the ring was for, and he would have known he'd be messing up her original husband's happily ever after. It wouldn't be like Steve to sacrifice someone else's happiness for himself.)

This would still leave some gaping and potentially fatal plot holes remaining, some of which presumably would be fixed by Loki in his upcoming TV show, but it would fix a lot. And the Russos just never found a way to write characters explaining what was really happening, within the dramatic constraints.

Huh! -- I'd have to check with Starlin or Shooter about that (don't recall who originally came up with the Gauntlet story in the comics). Unsure if Starlin is still alive...

I have a passing acquaintance with the work of "the Little Doctor", though I didn't know a relic of hers was encased like that. From a theological perspective, she's interesting not only as one of the most recent Doctors of Roman Catholicism, but also because she hinted pretty strongly at universal salvation being true (which is where my work crossed paths with hers).

Ah! -- in fact, he's part of the support-group scene (not spoilery since it's in the trailers)! Nice to see he's still around; we may disagree on a number of things, but I've often appreciated his story talent.

Also in the support scene, is one of the Russo brothers. For those who've seen the movie, yes he's that guy with the most dialogue. (He also played Zemo's victim, I think, in Civil War? -- the one Zemo replaced to interrogate Bucky.)

Avengers: Endgame has made box office history by taking a record-breaking $1.2bn (£929m) in global ticket sales in its opening run.

Forbes notes that 45% of the global ticket sales came from 3-D showings around the world while $91.5m (£70.7m) came from IMAX screens, double Marvel Studio's previous opening weekend record.
Also 4DX - the cinema experience with stimulating effects like water, wind, scent and strobe lighting - earned $15m (£11.6m) globally on the movie.

That's interesting. I didn't think it would've been a great 3D movie to see to begin with so I never considered it but I can now see some scenes would have been fantastic. The record take could be because it was showing in so many theaters. It started Thurs. night locally with about 5 viewings and then beginning Friday morning at 10am, about every half hour all day. I'm kind of glad because it meant I was able to get a seat without problem and the movie wasn't overcrowded at all.
