I think they're moving the contents so nothing is lost, but it will probably locked so that nobody can post. I don't think Calandale wants to maintain it if nobody is going to use it, so locking prevents it from being infested by spambots.

Aaanndd the gamebox is down.  I hope l'amour got the link.  Of course, I think I know his user id on BGG, we could probably ping him there.

Woodall messaged me his email -- so I gave him the link to here.

I don't know if it affects the decision-making, but Calandale has a very limited amount of server space of there and it might be an issue if there are too many attachments to the posts.  Not sure what size files y'all are using, but you might want to just check it with him to clarify.

It's really more of an economic game, the train theme is important, but it's really secondary.

It's an 18XX game with training wheels. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/18XX

Yes and no. It's actually the same geographic area and has a lot of the same RR companies. In both you're trying to accrue the highest net worth, but the means of doing so are a lot different.

C&O ran just enough ti bump up its profits, paid out measly dividends to bump up its share price. Time for Mike to run the Illinois central.

IC(ky) built and ran to Indy, paid out $6 / share.

PRR/Chris up next.
Title: Re: B&O Gamebox Refugee Game
Post by: binkman on September 02, 2016, 07:47:23 AM
PRR dumped a 2-train, bought the first 5 train, and built into New York City.

Ran:
Chicago $90
Ft. Wayne $40
Detroit $80
Cleveland $60
Wheeling $50
Pittsburgh $70
Harrisburg $20
Philly $50
Baltimore $40
New York $70
Coal $40
Maintenance -$150

Net $460

Dividends of $368 for me, $92 for Rex.

Rex is up next to run the NH and then NYC.

Assuming my math is correct, the present net worth scoreboard looks like this:

Mike $1545

Me $1091
Rex $763

Title: Re: B&O Gamebox Refugee Game
Post by: rstites25 on September 02, 2016, 10:23:22 AM
NH ran the same Boston/NY route and earned $70.

NYC ran:
Chicago (90) +
Detroit (80) +
Pittsburgh (70) +
NY (70) +
Cleveland (60) +
Indy (50) +
Wheeling (50) +
Buffalo (50)
---------------
= $520

less $100 maintenance = $420

It withheld the dividend.

Yeah. I'd have to clear old attachments pretty regularly. I don't mind, but it kinda kills any

NH ran and paid out $7 to me. NYC ran at the same $420 and paid out $252 to Woodall and $168 to me. Really should have paid out in Round 1, but I gambled that there would still be a 5-train available when I acted again and lost...

l'amour, with $505 is first to act in the market round.

l'amour:  $505
Rex:  $531
Woodall: $623
Mike: $679
Chris:  $775

I think James was in a hurry.

Well I cycled the two 5s so you could kill the game (and win it for me) with the NYC... don't quite need 10 deliveries for the Wabash at this point.

NP runs to Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh for 300 net and pays mike 30, Woodall 60 and me 210.

Mike's B&M to go next.

I believe you had the option to buy the first 6 after I did buy the 2 5s last turn. Maybe I was mistaken on company order, but I thought that would end it. That's why I had the Wabash with 2 5s at the beginning of this business round, when I'd make more with just the one. :)

That may very well be. I seem to recall withholding in BR1 last time with the intent of buying a 5 in BR2. But then when I was up in BR2, there was just a 6. I think my concern during the SR was whether the NYC would have a chance to get a 6.

You should know by now, that I won't expedite the end of a game just because I have little to no chance of winning. It probably would have been to your advantage to leave a 5 for the NYC since you make almost as much money off the NYC as I do.  ;D

Oh, I didn't expect you to do it. I just thought I'd present the opportunity. I went to the 6 because it was $500 and the NYC had $500. And I thought it'd be a suiting end after I read you receivership play (though you may not have wanted me in that so quickly). :)

Unfortunately, I had to withhold dividends to ensure that I would be first in the Stock Round to make sure I'd be able to start the NYC. Had I paid out and then Chris [I think] did not start the NYC when he went first instead of me, I would have been able to get 7 shares instead of 6. I had hoped that someone further down the Net-Worth ladder would have bought the shares instead of either you or Mike. I probably would have made up enough ground on them at 6/4 or 7/3 to pass them and if neither Mike or you had the shares, I might have made a run at you guys.

Title: Re: B&O Gamebox Refugee Game

NH ran for $70 net and paid out $28 to me, $21 to Woodall, and $21 to the company.

NYC bought a 6 train and ran to:

Chicago ($100)
Indy ($60)
Ft. Wayne ($50)
Detroit ($90)
Cleveland ($60)
Wheeling ($60)
Pitt ($80)
Buff ($60)
Syr ($40)
Utica ($20)
Albany ($50)
NY ($80)
Philly ($60)

For a total of $810 less $180 maintenance is a total of $630

Paid out dividends of $63 per share. $378 to me and $252 to Woodall

Back to Mike and the B&O for the final ultimate round.

If we played 18XX, the games available on VASSAL are:

18AL
1889
18VA
18GA
1826
18EU
1851
18Scan
18US

Rails has

1830
1835
1851
1856
1880
1889
18AL
18EU
18GA
18Kaas
18TN
18Lummer

The advantage of Rails is that it has rules enforcement and calculates the optimum route.

I'm open to either B&O or any 18XX (probably 1830 or 1889 would be a good place to start)

Erie done. Paid 234 to me and 156 to Woodall. Pen to go next.

That's me done too. I'm finishing with (spoilers!) total wealth of $2961 (pending confirmation by the authorities). Not a shameful amount but certainly in the bottom half, maybe even dead last.
Title: Re: B&O Gamebox Refugee Game

Penn ran for $51/share again, paying out $102 to Rex and the rest to yours truly.

Up to Rex to finish it out. Assuming he runs optimal cash production, I think James wins. Even if Rex trashes the NH and NYC, I think James will still win. Should look something like this:

James $4005
Mike $3669
Chris $3126
l'amour $2961
Rex $2621

If I had only held my stakes in the Penn and B&O, I feel like I could have done about 30% better.

Yeah, and the C&O could have been a beast if I could have gotten more money into it. I was hoping someone would throw in some venture capital when I started it; could snapped up a coal, hit the northeast, inflated the stock price and never looked back.

Finished up.

Final Net Worth:

$4005--Woodall:  $1461 (cash) + $1330 (10 x $133 Wabash) + $266 (2 x $133 Nickel) + $400 ((4 x $100 Erie) + $110 (1 x $100 C&O) +198 (3 x $66 NH) + $240 (4 x $60 NYC) = $4005

$3784--Mike:  $1304 (cash) + $1022 (7 x $146 B&O) $660 (6 x $110 IC) + $133 (1 x $133 Nickel) + $665 (5 x $133 B&M)

$3126--Chirs:  $1434 (cash) + $990 (9 x $110 C&O) + $592 (8 x $74 PRR) + $110 (1 x $110 IC)

$2815--l'amour:  $1005 (cash) + $931 (7 x $133 Nickel) + $133 (1 x $133 B&M) + $146 (1 x $146 B&O) + $600 (6 x $100 Erie)

$2633--Rex:  $1385 (cash) + $360 (6 x $60 NYC) + $148 (2 x $74) + $330 (3 x $110 IC) + $146 (1 x$146  B&O)  + $264 (4 x $66 NH)

If enough are up for an 18XX, I'd like to try one. Know next to nothing about the differences, so maybe you guys can recommend one. I'm eagerly awaiting GMT to ship me 1846. I know it's not on the lists, but can we play one like it? (And which one would be most like it?)
Title: Re: B&O Gamebox Refugee Game
Post by: egg_salad on September 19, 2016, 06:11:06 PM
I'd vote for an 18XX, but would be willing to play B&O again too.

1830 would be a decent one to start with, unless we have a shark amongst us (I am not --  I think the experts know this one pretty well.  I have played it 3-4 times, and never won).
18AL/GA are supposed to be a decent intro 18XX, but I have not played them.
I have played 1889, and it would be a decent intro, as it is very similar to 1830, but is on a more constrained map.  Cool little tweaks, but really not more complicated than 1830.

I'd probably list my 18XX preference as 1889 ,1830, any other..
Title: Re: B&O Gamebox Refugee Game
Post by: rstites25 on September 19, 2016, 06:32:24 PM
1889 is generally considered a good entry-level 18XX. It's essentially 1830 on a different map. I think the train rush is milder and it's probably more difficult to go bankrupt.

I don't know a ton about 1846, but I think it's supposed to be somewhat unique. There's no initial auction for privates, which can be somewhat difficult for new players who have no idea how to value the privates. I think the stock market it is a bit milder.

B&O and 1830 cover the same geographical region and period, so it provides a good comp.

Off the top of my head, here are the major differences between the two:

I'm sure there are more, but that's what comes immediately to mind.

I would think 1889 or 1830 would be best. If we're 4 players, I don't think there'd be much chance of a bankruptcy in 1830 given the lack of experience among us all.

I changed my mind. I'm in for 1830 on Rails. Not sure 1889 plays well with 5?

Clearclaw rates it as follows at the various player counts: (https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/43918/item/979436#item979436)

Overall Rating: 8.5
Rating with 3 Players: 7 (8.5 if teaching)
Rating with 4 Players: 8.5
Rating with 5 Players: 7.5

And 1830: (https://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/43918/item/979366?commentid=1146861#comment1146861)

Overall rating: 9
Rating with 2 players: 5
Rating with 3 players: 7
Rating with 4 players: 8.5 (not sure why this isn't 9)
Rating with 5 players: 8.5 (not sure why this isn't 9)
Rating with 6 players: 9

The potential problem with 1889 is that the train mix is such that when you jump from 5's to 6's (I think), that it's likely only two companies will have a slot open to buy the train. If they don't have the money to buy a 6 (to kill the 3's) then the game may drag on unnecessarily.

I would vote for 1830. I think the worst that might happen is that someone goes bankrupt. But that's probably preferable to the game dragging on.

I did read on the 1889 forums that there are some questions about how good Rails rules enforcement is. So we'll probably still have to keep an eye on it. But I think it does a generally good idea. I haven't been able to find the 1889 rules online. The AH 1830 rules are here (https://boardgamegeek.com/filepage/131517/cleaner-copy-original-avalon-hill-rules) (They are supposed to be far superior to the Mayfair reprint).

Title: Re: B&O Gamebox Refugee Game

I'm not sure what the advantage of VASSAL would be. Both allow for PBEM play and we'd be posting a logfile for each.

Rails has rules enforcement, but isn't perfect. (For example, in the 1889 module at least, it highlights hexes you can legally place a token in, but you can actually select any hex with a city and put a token there). Rails also tabulates and tracks all stock prices, cash transfers, etc. This includes paying dividends. So no hassle of trying to calculate payouts for multiple people. My hunch is that the rules enforcement is only lacking in some edge cases, but will generally get things right. In my limited experience playing around with Rails solo, it's probably superior to VASSAL for 18XX.

I'm down with 1830 on rails.

Reminds me of a conversation with my wife:
Her: "this car corners like it is on wheels .."
Me: "rails"
Her: "What?"
Me: "The saying is this car corners like it is on rails."
Her: "That makes no sense!"
Me: "Well, they are trying to show that the car is capable cornering very fast, as if it were held down.." trailing off seeing look on her face.
Her: "Whatever"
Me: "Yes, dear, it's stupid." (grinning)

Now, just to be clear, my wife is actually much smarter than I am, but there are a few things I know that she does not.  When I find one of those things, I remember it forever.

I hate to put a damp squid on everything, but you really shouldn't put women on a pedal stool.

Is everyone ready or do people need more time to get through the rules?

I'm going to be in the middle of nowhere without access until next Friday probably, so a delay would be fine by me. I also haven't yet read the rules.

In the mean time, i just discovered that Phil Eklund is a genius. Does anyone have any interest in playing Pax Pamir or Pax Porfiriana? I could start another topic in the forum for it.

I could play that. Also, I think he was interviewed by the Guns, Dice, and Butter guy. Good listen.
