Title: Grogheads Fantasy Football 2014 Season
Post by: Bison on July 14, 2014, 07:31:13 AM
Well we are approaching that time of year again.  Football season.  The league invites for managers who played last year have been sent out.  Once the previous managers have had a chance to respond to the invitation, I'll open up the league to the general population of the Grogheads asylum to fill out any remaining manager positions.  If you are interested in an open manager slot, just put a note in this tread and the open slots will be made available in the order you post here.

Rookie League - Auto Draft, not a keeper league.

Pro League - Live Draft, keeper league.

Need to start looking at a date for the Pro League Live Draft.  I'm thinking the last weekend in August.  Open to suggestions.

The league scoring and rules will be posted forth coming unless Metaldog gets to it before me.

Thanks.

Bison

Could we get a sticky please?

I've never played in a keeper league. How many guys do you get to keep from last year?

In for both.

How many keepers do we get in that league?

Just to let everyone know I'll be working through the keeper settings with metaldog at some point over the next week or so.  I'm up for discussion on the number of players kept and how that plays out in the draft.  We are a trade draft picks league, so at some point you will be able to trade a draft picks.  This is going to be our first keeper season so I expect some hiccups as we move toward our draft date and the start of the season.  Just let me know if you have any suggestions or questions.

I was looking for more of a dried out soda spill sticky residue consistency.

I've been in fantasy leagues since the late 80's, yet, I have never been in a keeper league.  I'm not sure really how to go about it.  It's my understanding that the round a keeper is drafted in, is the round you lose a pick in.  So, if you get Adrian Peterson in the first round, and you designate him your keeper, you won't have a first round pick this year.  Beyond that, I have no experience.  How many to keep?  How many years?  What's the penalty for multiple years?  Who does the bookkeeping?  What's the benefit of trading draft picks?  And so on.  What else, fellas?
Title: Re: Grogheads Fantasy Football 2014 Season

No that is the basics of it.  I think we'd have to use this year draft projections as the "round" the player would be drafted.  So the number of teams equals number of picks in a round so as it stands now 8 players/round.  Pre-draft  player ranked 1-8 1st round, 9-16 2nd round, ect...I think we'd have to look at the numbers because a #1 or # 2 defense by numbers would be at the end draft rounds.  Or use the pre-draft average round number and round down.  So Peyton Manning 1.7 is a 1st round pick and not a 2nd round pick.  And Seattle a 6.6 would be a 6th round pick.

Also we just need to decide the number of players that can be marked as keepers.  1 is too few but 7 is most likely too many.  I'd lean toward 3 players.

Additionally pre-draft trades must be equal in number of "picks" so a player and a round pick for two picks.  Rounds do not matter unless the player does not fill the same round as a keeper pick.

Anyway basically we'd have to go in and pre-set the draft or honor system if I keep Brees no one can select him and I must take him in the second round.

Just some food for thought...

Can't you set it up to keep a set number of players and then have a normal draft with the number of rounds reduced by the number of keepers?

Or we can do like you suggest and post the keepers here and everyone takes them when it is there time to draft in the first round, and second if we keep 2. Then the rest of the draft continues as normal. We would all probably have to be on line for the first rounds for that to work.

I'm not sure about trading draft picks. You can only have so many people on your team and who would trade their 1st round pick for a 3rd round pick in the same draft? Now if you swapped this years 1st round pick for next years 1st and 3rd round pick that might make some sense if your keeper is not someone you want to keep next year but I don't know if how it would work especially if someone dropped out of the league.

I like 2-3 keepers. I know that you can set up a league with specific keepers already on rosters, but I have absolutely no idea how it works. Yay for no help at all!  :D

Look on your teams for the keeper tab that is how you designate a keeper.

My thoughts:
3 keepers
keeper occupies 1 spot higher than last years round drafted or projected round to be drafted this year if not originally drafted by the player.  (1st round choice remains 1st round.  2nd round becomes a 1st rounder this year and so forth.)
draft order/rounds preset based on last years final standings.  I cannot remember who won but I'm sure Metaldog can remind me.  They pick last.
once the keeper picks are selected, the draft is set and either metaldog or myself can preplace players into the correct round of the draft is my understanding.
trading drafts picks.  We are a keeper league this means picks traded can be record for, I believe, out as far as 2 years can be made.  The traded picks are tracked in the game.

If a manager from last year does not return, we will attempt to recruit a new manager for that team.  The new management can change the name, logo, avatar and choose keepers based on the last year's players.  Right now just waiting on replies from Steelie and Con from last years owners.

We are sitting at 8 teams right now.  The league can grow to 12 if anyone is interested.

I'm pretty good with how the games scored last year.  There might be a few tweeks to be made.  Make your proposals for league rule changes now.  The owners can voice their opinions and then we'll put it to a vote.

I don't see a keeper tab.

My suggestions for scoring changes would be:
Make sure you only count a fumble if you lose the ball. I'm not sure if it was that way last year.
Sacks +1 instead of +2.
2 points for a 0-19 yard field goal.
Defenses allowing 300-399 yards 0 points instead of -1. This is about the average and you shouldn't lose points for being average.

Choose Keepers is the final option that comes up under My Team. I can't tell if there's a way to determine which round you selected a player, though.

Looks like Bison suggested 3 keepers.  Not on the site, but, check Draft Central tab.  It may give you a list of where you drafted someone last year.

Yes if you go to the draft section there is a hyperlink to last years draft.  The players on your team who were drafted will show which round they were drafted.  For right now keeper is 3.  Ultimately Metaldog or I will need to insert your keepers into the draft for this year.

Can the ones you keep be your initial round picks? If you keep 3 then they are your 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks.

As I understand Bison, each keeper is treated as a pick one round higher this year than last.  So your 3rd last year becomes a 2nd this years.  Your 2nd a 1st.  Problematically, I don't know what to do if you choose to keep your 1st round pick.

Your 1st round would just remain a 1st round.  The basic premise is that it will force talent to be recycled into the available pool.

I don't see why where someone was drafted last year should matter. My guess is that most people will keep their first round pick from last year as one of their keepers. Unless they got hurt why wouldn't you, they are probably the best player on your team? If you found a gem in the 8th round last year and they are now projected to be a 2nd round pick this year why should you give up an 8th round this year? That is what they were last year and you got them cheap. That doesn't mean you should get them cheap every year.
Title: Re: Grogheads Fantasy Football 2014 Season
Post by: MetalDog on July 18, 2014, 05:30:21 PM
Let me start by reiterating that I have never been in a keeper league.  Everything that follows is speculation and based on what I've read in the (sometimes very distant) past.  For example, let's say that you picked up Aaron Rodgers the year he first became a starter.  Let's say you picked him up in the 7th round.  From that day to this, Rodgers has steadily improved to become one of the handful of elite QB's in the NFL.  Now, let's also say that there is no penalty for designating Rodgers as your keeper.  So, every year, you get to pick studs to fill out your roster to go along with the State Farm pitchman and you do not have to spend a high draft pick to assure your team of Aaron's services.  So, in theory, you could have Jamaal Charles, Eddie Lacy and Aaron Rodgers as the core of your team, for the price tag of a 1st and 2nd round pick.  Do you want to face that?  For that matter, let's say you get lucky enough to land those three guys in your current draft.  Bison is suggesting three keepers.  Do you want to go into every year knowing you have to face down that trio?

By making each keeper a little more expensive to own year after year, the cost/benefit of keeping them becomes a little harder to justify.  Although, I would suggest that any one you drafted in the first round automatically be returned to the pool of available talent.  If each keeper is going to cost one round higher than the previous years spot they were picked in, I contend that there is nothing higher than a 1st round pick, so, back they go.  This way, everyone gets a shot at owning Adrian Peterson, or Megatron, or Beast Mode, etc.

No.  It'd be means to force talent back into the draft, but reward picking a future/unexpected talent in later rounds.

Sorry I didn't read your last post MD, but you have the right of it.  I think that points wise 1st and 2nd round picks are generally a wash, but points production falls off after that because you begin to draft for roster position not the best available.  I'm not opposed to first rounders going automatically back into the draft, but there is some choices to make if you can only keep your first or second rounder.  Also if you finished last in the league last year, that means you own the first pick of the draft.  So do you want to give that up to keep a player?  It's the call of the GM and brings some long term strategy into the draft.

This is a keeper league and owners get a vote for rule changes.  So defensive changes are up for discussion.

Set my keepers, though it was not as hard a choice as I thought it would be. I couldn't quite make myself keep that Jets wide receiver even though he had a phenomenal year. Honestly I'm still debating whether I should keep Foster or not, so who knows, I may change my mind. I'm a Texans fan, but I gotta think his heyday is done.

OK first thoughts...how did I ever make it third place with such a putrid team (that is if I am reading this correctly?).  I had greater than 50% turnover in active layers from my draft picks

Also I am completely confused by the Keeper league and rules and how to execute this.

Do we keep players we drafted or do we chose from our end of year (2013) roster?
Where and how do we select what players we keep on the Yahoo site (I think I get that we can choose three)
What exactly does it mean when you say that it costs us 1 draft pick higher?  Can  someone please provide a scenario of how this works.

Thanks

Pick your Keepers by hovering the mouse over 'My Team' once you're looking at the League page. One of the options (very bottom of the list) is Choose Keepers.

As for what you'll lose by keeping them, you'll surrender your pick in this year's draft that's a round higher than where you chose that player in last year's draft. For example, I'll use my choices :

LeSean McCoy was last year's 1st rounder. I'm keeping him, and thus surrendering this year's first rounder. Note that I would not have been able to also keep my 2nd round pick from last year, since that also would have surrendered my 1st rounder this season.
Peyton Manning was last year's 3rd, and I'm dumping this year's 2nd by keeping him.
Alshon Jeffrey was last year's 14th rounder, making him a 13th round mega-bargain this season.

You can see where you drafted players last season by choosing the 'Last Season' option under Draft Central.

Thanks for the explanation

If my final roster contains players that I never drafted (ie players I traded for or took off free agents as the season progressed) whats the impact of choosing those players on my draft order?

For example I dropped Gronk after he shredded his knee (he was a high pick for me) and picked up Julius Thomas in week 7 or so from available free players.  Since I never drafted him what impact does that have on my draft sequence?

Thanks

The default to keep players that were not drafted but picked up as a free agent last year will be to the projected round to be drafted this year.

So you can't keep your 1st and 2nd rounder from last year? Why?

Last year's 1st round pick costs you this year's 1st. However, every pick from beyond the 1st round last year costs you one round higher this year, meaning your 2nd rounder last year also costs you this year's 1st. Since you only have one 1st rounder this year, you can't keep both.

Is that the way keeper leagues work? Seems kind of odd if you are building a team not to keep your two best players from last year no matter where they were drafted.

How in the heck do I know what round someone was drafted in last year?

I like the fact that you can't keep your top 2 picks from last year. It keeps talent in the pool and forces you to look beyond the guys you snagged early on.

You can see where you drafted players by choosing the 'Last Season' option at the bottom of the list under Draft Central. Guys you didn't draft but picked up during the season can be kept by surrendering the pick in whatever round they're expected to go in this year.

It's sort of a forcing function to put talent back into the pool, but rewards good late round picks.

So...what if you want to keep a guy that you picked up after the draft, and he went undrafted in the first place? Does he count against anything?

My only issue is wondering if my first round pick is worth Aaron Rodgers (whom I picked 2nd last year). No way I'm keeping Arian Foster for a first round pick, not as banged up as he is. Rodgers, though, might be worth it.

My other keeper is Vernon Davis. I'm loath to keep a TE, but he went undrafted last year I think, and he had a big year last year. Which is reflected of course in his little holdout from camp over his salary, but he finally reported. I gotta wonder if he'll step up again.

My other option is Decker from the Jets; he had a good year, he went undrafted as well...but, you know, Jets.

The default to keep players that were not drafted but picked up as a free agent last year will be to the projected round to be drafted this year.

OK I can see where players who were drafted last year and at what round but how can you find out what is the projected round this year for an undrafted player from last year?

More than half my roster is these undrafted last year players

Thanks
Con

If you look at the draft projections for this year, it will list the player and the average round the player is expected to be taken.  So if a player is project to be taken in the 2.8 round, it would be a second round pick.

Thanks, Bison. Vernon is a 5.2 so I might just keep him.

Well right now we have an issue.  We are stuck at 7 teams and need an even number to set the draft.  So either Steelie comes back or we need to find a replacement.

I'm back and just logged onto Yahoo Sports and am trying to figure out how the heck the keeper player works. Seems to be the topic of the moment, so I'll catch up on my reading  8)

At some point Friday, I'll be setting up the draft for the pro league.   If there are issues with two keepers needing the same draft round slot, I'll post it here.  Setting the draft for 31 August what's a good time for everyone?  I'm leaning toward 8 PM EST, but open for suggestions.

Rookie League draft will be set on Friday to take place on 30 August, so get your draft rosters complete prior to that date.

I don't.  How can you stand by your teams performance, good OR bad, if you aren't the one who picked it?  It's bad enough there's only eight of us and now we have people who wanna bail because they think the computer can do better?  Wussies!

Because of plausible deniability.

"Well my team was auto-drafted...that's why they suck."

Though I do see your point. I just haven't had time to do a lot of player research.

So....apparently we just had our draft?

I'm glad I had my list in, since I had set it up for the rookie league I simply carried it over. I did log on about halfway through the draft and managed to make a few pics of my own before it was over. I'm actually fine with my team, but I'm wondering why the different dates on the draft as well as what happened to the keeper players?

I've extended keeper selections open through 18 AUG.  So next week I'll validate keepers for each team, consult the magic 8 ball, set up the draft with last years winner having the choicest draft slots in each round.

Thanks.

So...we're still doing a live draft in the Pro league...but if you set the keeper deadline to August 18, does that mean the draft is set for a different day than the 17th?

I know I said I have nothing going on that day, but as my wife reminded me, that happens to be my birthday, so I have no idea if I'll be around or not for that. Even if I am, I may forget, and log in the next day to see a team full of Jets and Bills.  :tickedoff:

It was a 12 team, as that's what my home league is, and the requirements were QB, 3 WR, 2 RB, TE, K, DEF, 6 BN.  Ours is the same except we have one less WR and include a W/R Flex spot.  The scoring was the same as ours.  I picked 11th, so I had two picks almost back to back and then had to wait a very long time to do it again.

I started with a stud RB, Marshawn Lynch and then gave the pick to the best available at the spot I was picking.  I immediately got in trouble because after Lynch, the next four picks were made more on BYE Week considerations rather than talent and expectation.  I did ok, but, I knew had to fill the bench with good alternatives.  Weeks 4 & 9 are the troublesome ones.  Toby Gerhart was not the choice I would have made for my second RB, but, he'll got a lot of work in J'ville and he's Week 4.  Brandon Marshall, Randall Cobb, Sammy Watkins, the Buffalo Defense and Robbie Gould are all Week 9.  I'll work around it.  Somehow.

I like the team I assembled from the sixth spot much better than the one from picking eleventh.  Part of the reason my early picks were so good is that the people participating in this one were drafting pretty screwy.  First pick was Peyton Manning.  QB Number 1 is just not done these days!  You can see that Dez Bryant went 4th and Matthew Stafford went 9th!  How crazy is THAT?!?!?!??!!

Everyone on my team from Rounds 8 through 13 are bench players.  I again have a Week 9 problem.  FIVE of my starters, there's only nine, have a Week 9 Bye.  Two of my Bench players do as well.  There are four Week 10 Byes on my roster, too.  Two Starters and two Bench.  My hope now is that I will be as pleased with my Pro League roster this year.  No CJ Spiller for me THIS time!

Your Team
1. Matt Forte (Chi - RB)
2. Le'Veon Bell (Pit - RB)
3. Randall Cobb (GB - WR)
4. Rob Gronkowski (NE - TE)
5. DeSean Jackson (Was - WR)
6. Jeremy Maclin (Phi - WR)

Detroit Ligers violated the league rules and tried to keep two first round picks.  By powers granted to me by the intrawebs, the magic eight ball, and a penny minted in 1984 (Denver mint specifically) a coin flip was conducted and Jamal Charles is your first round pick.  Calvin Johnson is back into the draft pool.

Because I had to go back and try and fix the keeper on one team it reset everyone however I was able to place the players who were picked as keepers into the appropriate draft slot, so you all will still get your keepers even though they all do not have the little k next to their names.  The draft will go live 7pm CST on Sunday.

Just participated in my first, for realz, draft.  Ten teams, standard scoring.  I picked second and Peyton Manning went first.  For the second draft in a row.  My team follows.  If you want the rest of the league round by round, I'll post it.

The league is having draft issues.  The draft was reset and I cannot reselect the 7pm time for tonight.  Trying to select a new time for tonight, but Yahoo's servers are overwhelmed.  If I cannot resolve it, the draft will have to be an auto draft which I suspect is fine with everyone since only Metaldog and I seemed likely to show up for a live draft anyway.

Well Yahoo's severs must be melting down because I cannot even set it to auto draft right now.  Sorry gentlemen but we will have teams for the start of the season whether we like the teams or not is another matter.

Well Yahoo is basically fucking over tens of thousands of football fans right now.  The league was setup correctly but somehow on yahoo's end they screwed up EVERY draft set for today.

I'm very offended by that.  I've been looking forward to this for weeks.

What I'm really pissed about is, for some reason, I'm not able to keep Calvin Johnson.  What's the point of a keeper league if I can't keep certain players. :tickedoff:

Well because you attempted to keep two first round picks.  If you'd rather keep Johnson over Charles, let me know and since our draft is fubar we can swap those two players.

Sorry just haven't been many posts down here other than MD and I and those who were posting were posting they were auto drafting.  No offense intended.

I find this whole yahoo meltdown to be crap.  I thought about migrating over to ESPN but didn't to preserve the historical data attached to both the rookie and pro leagues.  Now we get this crap.  At best gents is we can lock in a time for tomorrow evening.

Well they are migrating draft times now, but at this point I don't know when it'll happen.  I guess I can ping people on Steam if the time is reset, but not how well or fair that will work out.  Since apparently more people intended to be on the live draft than I though would be attending.

I like ESPN a lot better than Yahoo.

Maybe next season we can move there is Yahoo stays f'd up. We can always agree who drafts their keepers and in what round if necessary. It's not like we are playing for a $1,000.

I don't mind ESPN, but when I originally setup the league at the other site a few years ago I had extremely limited bandwidth and ESPN is covered with linked advertisements and such that it'd take me 20 minutes to refresh or change pages on the site.

Perhaps there are alternatives to Yahoo, NFL, and ESPN out there that can be run using separate software. I know that would cost, but perhaps that could be mitigated by each owner splitting it - that is if only one is needed, by the commissioner.

I looked into it briefly once and there are options out there. Just not certain how they all work or what the costs involved are.

In the end, free is a pretty good deal, even if you have to deal with BS like Yahoo's server issues.

Oddly enough, my draft report card says I took Peyton Manning, DeMarco Murray, Phillip Rivers and DeSean Jackson....none of whom I chose or who are on my roster.

Yahoo seems glitchy this year. I hope they hold up.

Uhm...well...

Quote
Picking last in the draft, Wild E's Coyotes delivered a team that even a spurned ex would have to appreciate. Taking advantage of a draft position some may deem unfavorable, they're projected to finish in the top spot of Grogheads Pro League with a record of 11-2-0 (1,372 points). They went with a balanced approach early, selecting QB Aaron Rodgers (24th overall), RB Alfred Morris (40th), WR Demaryius Thomas (9th), and TE Jimmy Graham (8th) within the first five rounds. They ended up with the most prolific TE duo in the league, as they added Graham and Dennis Pitta.

Yahoo's smoking the reefer, because I don't have any of those bolded players it says I do.  ???

Learning to handle success will be the biggest obstacle for BaconExplosion, as they figure to be at the top of the standings all season. They are expected to go 10-3-0 (1,331 points) and finish in second-place in Grogheads Pro League. If they have a bad season, it won't be due to a lack of wide receivers, as they used three of their first five selections to pick up WRs Julio Jones (third round), Keenan Allen (fourth round), and Andre Johnson (fifth round). They built the lowest-scoring QB pair in the league, as they added Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson to their squad

Yes definitely Borked as the only one i did actually draft is Julio Jones

Woulda loved to be there to draft, but I just got back from my weekend road trip.

Jesus, did I get bad defenses in the Pro league. And...hmmm...it seems Yahoo screwed me over...not only did I not get Alshon Jeffrey as my 3rd keeper, but he's on another roster. Thanks, Yahoo.  >:(

They set him as my third keeper.  I only kept two, Jimmy Graham and Eddie Lacy.  I don't know how to solve that, but I'd be glad to make good on it.
Title: Re: Grogheads Fantasy Football 2014 Season

I might have misplaced Jeffery.  The keepers in the draft were place by me into their team's draft order.  I had to reset the keepers during that process to unlock a player.  I used notes I'd written down so it's quit likely I made a mistake.  Only thing to do would be a trade between yourself and Metaldog.

Hmmm...I have no idea what to do here.

Uh, I was supposed to give up my 13th rounder for him. Did we want to trade whoever I did get with that pick for him? I have no idea who that is, but I can check.

Bison, I take some solace in the fact that you beat me this week because of the Cowboys on your team  O0 Even the points put up by Brees were due to the Cowboys defense. It eases the pain somewhat, ha!

Murray is having a career season.  The Cowboys O-line is vastly improved this year and it shows in the running game.  Romo is still a douche that I have full confidence will piss away the season Murray and the O-line are having this year.

I hate to give Jerry credit for anything good, but that O-line has really been rebuilt into a solid unit.

I'd tack on a few days for depression as a result of the O's post season performance so far too.   I've written off caring about this football season outside of checking on my fantasy teams, because the Vikings have also decided to write off the season too.  Worst Vikings team to take the field in a long, long time.

Yes the O's came up a little short but it's not over. They just have to make sure they are 1-0 on Tuesday.

These are pretty two evenly matched teams and the one who wins will be the one who gets the most 'breaks' going their way. A bloop hit here and there is the difference between a .250 hitter and a .300 hitter and it's no different with teams.

I'm in a family fantasy football league, 12 people. I have lost 4 games so far, all to ladies. They have all scored their highest point totals of the year against me and I just lost last night by .8 points on the extra point by SF on the meaningless INT TD return. It has just been a bad fantasy football year so far and the future in it doesn't look so hot either!

We should rename them the Pro League and the REALLY Pro League, considering that the talent pool is divided by more players in the "rookie" league and therefore requires more skill to win...and of course there are no real rookies as most of the same people play in both   8)

Half a point sent me to the also-ran status in the poorly-named Rookie League, with five of my nine starters putting up fewer points than projected. A great game and much deserved win by Polar Vengeance.

Well, my point was that this is the second or even third season for everyone, so calling it the Rookie League seems odd. As for checking leagues once a season, playing actively in both leagues (as you are) I've only seen a very few instances where it seemed a team was dead sticking it, but that's happened in both leagues.
Title: Re: Grogheads Fantasy Football 2014 Season
Post by: Bison on December 16, 2014, 08:00:25 PM
The distinction was not made based on everyone's experience, but rather the rookie league is an auto draft, non-keeper league where as the pro league is a live draft, keeper league.  Anyway in the end, it's all for fun and hopefully to add a little extra excitement to watching the NFL stats over the course of the season.
Title: Re: Grogheads Fantasy Football 2014 Season
Post by: Steelgrave on December 16, 2014, 08:06:48 PM
Gotcha. That makes sense. Even though I've fared better in the Rookie League, I've enjoyed the Pro league more. The live draft was especially fun, even though more than once the guy I was going to draft went one turn before me, ha!

Next year I'll probably just play in the Pro League and let the Rookie League go. I think with the keeper/draft format, we have a winner here.

I took him as a rookie and it amazes me how under the radar he still is. Until last week, I believe he averaged over 26 points a game, with only two games in the high teens. So uh, yeah....he will be my keeper for next season. You can mark it down, lol.

LOL, my starting QB, Andrew Luck, has been money in the bank alllll season....until the playoffs. He let me down with a mere (for him) 16 points last week but topped it this week with a whole 2.36 points. And no, I didn't misplace a decimal. My 10-3 record in the rookie league will buy me a Starbucks provided I have a fiver with that  O0

Funny thing is that in the Pro League I had both Luck and Romo, kept Romo on the bench all season. Now Romo is hotter than the chick Brady goes home to each night and Luck is making RGIII look good.

Good season in both leagues, guys. Lots of close games and well-earned victories.
