How is the AI?

The AI is the AI from the board game. (rules, charts, response tables, and modifiers by events....)
so i think it pretty slick, otherwise there would be complains all over at BGG about RAF Eagle board game
or i hope so...

Actually i see the PC version just a as a helper tool to tremendously speed up the process of playing
(there is a log file where you can still check all dice rolls and modifiers and what had happend in the background)

here is an example of a one day scenario where i conducted several raids

I picture an interface from 20 years ago (don't know if that's at all accurate) and end up passing every time.

The UI has the charm of a shareware tool from the 90ties ^-^
but the map is a 1:1 representation of the board game map, interactive, updated on the fly to give the information, can get zoomed and dragged around.
overlay are movable windows and message boxes. the chits are crisp.
its functional

max zoomed out

max zoomed in

example: Fighter selection  (i have to pick from Luftflotte3 to protect the mayor raid on Waymouth Port, )

example: Gruppen Placement (the 4 fighter Gruppen highlighted are about to add to the Hunt box),

example of a Result Window

the original pictures are more sharp, the free picture hosting service seems to takes its toll

- on a side note -
on program stability
atm i am the victim of either a nasty bug with my specific system or maybe its a copyright protection scheme with the CD that is falsely kicking in.

when i start a game and while accessing a target card to place into a slot in the planning phase, sometimes a circular cursor shows up for a short time (as if the program want to read/write access a file or something) and then program just terminates.

I have reinstalled, reinstalled from a different external CD drive, run in admin mode, and tried some compatibility settings too ...but with no luck yet)

of course i have wrote a bug report to Decision Games support, and got a response from the programer Michael Olsen himself in less the 24h, go figure!  :)

Really nothing to complain about support here :D

Looks very interesting, Mike.

That looks really interesting.  They should have Mike do some screenshots for their website, because they ones they have on there right now look like poo.

For those interested in download versions vs physical shipment, definitely possible and I just completed the transaction.  It's maybe not the greatest process but not horrible and well worth it to get delivered as a download.  From the time I ordered it until download links given to me, was only about 1/2 day and likely largely due to timezone difference.

1)  Go to their site and place an order for the computer game you want.  You'll need to still select a shipment option, but that will be removed later.  Doesn't appear they charge your credit card right away.
2)  Immediately after ordering, send an email to service@decisiongames.com.  Within that email, let them know your order details and that you want the download version instead.
3)  The support person will process your order without the shipping charges and then provide you with a link to download.

Now whether the game is good is a different story....I more bought it to try out the process versus the game itself:)  But I am eager to give it a short and if this turns out good, might try some of their other ones.

...here is a very good video (series) about playing RAF Eagle the boardgame.
The 1 day introductory scenario

Playing through took him about 2 hours and 10 minutes

and for those interested in the vids you can see the AI directing the British at work
(when the chances are to bad Spitfires and Hurricanes don't come out to play and England just suck up the eventual bombing damage... the trick as The German is to compose a raid not to small and then get mauled, but tasty enuf to trigger a response, but not to overwhelming so they just fly home. I go for the radar nets first because that reduce the detection level. also ist important to compose waves -if the drawn card allow that planning- in the same  sector or near sector.
If all went well with timing, their planes are still on the ground and cant respond in numbers, the single squadron in the pool then stays away to fight another day  and Germans can actually do some good bomb damage.... well, if the event cards and dice rolls not ruin the Luftwaffe plans all to much)

With the PC version I just played the introductory scenario in 40 minutes
... and I reeeally have taken my time on planning the raids and later had in addition read the whole logfile of the day too
I scored -8 Victory points, a German win :)

yesterday, (before learning from Ronnie Tuckers videos) I lost a game with a +8 victory points result so.

- on a side note -
i had a very nice, fruitful email and file exchange with Michael Olsen, the programmer.  O0
me sending in crash dumps and he sending me new test-candidates.
Didn't had any CTDs anymore with the latest versions, but will test some more ...if RL don't interdict to much.
The support was outstanding.

Ordered Lion and Eagle, and also the Tarawa invasion game.  :smitten:

I have the Tarawa game and like it, but you do have to figure out how the UI works a bit too much on your own. Also have the D-day at Omaha which I really would like to play more, but it still has bugs that makes it near impossible to win. Which is too bad, because I really like the game mechanics of that series. I wonder if they will make PC versions of Peleliu and Iwo Jima that exist as boardgames?

I suppose there isn't a computer multiplayer adaptation of Lion vs Eagle? -- boardgame only?

Well kind of a PC variant, if you happen to have Tabletop Simulator,
RAF game can be found in The Workshop of TTS ... i didn't have testet it.

I assume there is also a Vassal version

Ah, yes! -- thought I had already searched TTS. Thanks!
