Article was updated to indicate that the police were treating it as a terror attack, and that the terrorists were hiding out in a local restaurant or something.

But it's a fluid situation and it's possible there are multiple events getting conflated here, too, so let's wait and see.

There have been anarchist and others protesting tourism in Barcelona. Almost all nonviolent.  Some property damage.

But this is the first large scale killing I've read about.

The state government is saying 13 killed and 50 injured.

had cnn on all day at work and was following this. they kept showing some footage of someone walking with a cellphone perhaps and taping the carnage at their feet. sickened me that this person was just walking down the street and videotaping the broken bodies in their path. even if you arent medically trained you can try to help  :pullhair: i wouldnt even be surprised if cnn had paid for the footage.

I saw the same. I bet if it was him on the ground, he'd want somebody to stop lend a hand maybe. Or hold a hand at least.

Looks like the Spanish police have stopped a potential new terror attack.
The swine still killed "at least" 13 people... could these be the same ones that did the Barcelona attack? After all the killers got away from the Barcelona crime scene.

the actual report is:
130 citizens from 34 nations are affected by the attack, leaving 14 dead (their nationalities are under investigation)

the authorities speak about a 12 men terror cell: 5 are shot dead, 3 captured and 4 still on the run including the driver of the van.

i have trust in Spanish Police and Guardia Civil, and the support from many nations and their services
there is no place to hide for the remaining attackers in Europe, and only a few very remote and hard to reach for them spots on the whole planet. the nearest would be ISIS pockets in Libya, other parts of Africa, and what's still left in Syria

QuoteBARCELONA (Reuters) - Spanish police shot dead five would-be attackers after confronting them early on Friday in a town south of Barcelona where hours earlier a suspected Islamist militant drove a van into crowds, killing 13 people and wounding scores of others.

Islamic State said the perpetrators had been responding to its call for action by carrying out Thursday's rampage along Barcelona's most famous avenue, which was thronged with tourists enjoying an afternoon stroll at the peak of the summer season.

Bodies, many motionless, were left strewn across the avenue and authorities said the toll of dead, which included several children, could rise, with more than 100 injured.

Hours later in the early hours of Friday, as security forces hunted for the van's driver, police said they killed five suspects in Cambrils, 120 km (75 miles) south along the coast from Barcelona, to thwart a separate attack.

The five men attempted to drive into tourists on the Cambrils seafront, police said. Their car overturned and some of them began stabbing people. Four were shot dead at the scene and the fifth was killed a few hundred meters away, police said.

One civilian - a Spanish woman - was killed in the Cambrils incident while several other civilians and a police officer were injured. Police destroyed explosive belts the men had been wearing, though they turned out to be fake.

Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, the day before the van plowed into the tree-lined walkway of Barcelona's Las Ramblas avenue, one person was killed in an explosion in a house in a separate town southwest of Barcelona, police said.

Police said they had arrested a Moroccan and a man from Spain's north African enclave of Melilla, though neither was the van driver. He was seen escaping on foot and was still at large. A third man was arrested in the town of Ripoll on Friday.

A judicial source said investigators believed a cell of at least eight people, possibly 12, may have been involved in the Barcelona and Cambrils operations and that it had been planning to use gas canisters.

[...]German Chancellor Angela Merkel, speaking after media reports that some Germans were among those killed, said Islamist terrorism "can never defeat us" and vowed to press ahead with campaigning for a general election in Germany in September.

[...]However, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said the attack showed the European Union's system of migrant relocation was wrong. "It is dangerous. Europe should wake up," he said. "We are dealing here with a clash of civilizations."

the Spanish Police is searching an Iman's home for DNA samples, to fit them to remains found in the bomb-shop that had exploded (and so had forced to kick off planed terror operation of that cell early and alter the ways of conduction)

A white Renault Kangoo minivan is wanted, and is believed to have passed into France with the remaining 4 terrorists on the run.

@MikeGER

Let's be clear. None of the perps - as is the case with almost all the terror attacks in Europe Charlie Hebdo, Nice, Bataclan, Orlando, 9/11, Manchester, London Bridge x2, Brussels Airport, and other incidents too numerous to mention - have absolutely nothing to do with any of certain sects within Islamic communities of Europe, nor indeed anywhere else in the world. To be clear, being a member of certain sects within the muslim community is definitely not a common denominator in terrorist attacks on predominately non-muslims in Europe and the rest of the world.

I'd just like to make the point that Islam is not a supremacist religion, and it does not encourage through the Shari'a for its members to persecute or kill non-muslims through jihad. Jihad is all about peaceful struggle with oneself. It is like a kind of Zen... peaceful and meditative. We won't be seeing any more terror attacks. I don't want to see any criticism of certain sects within the Islamic community for links to terror because that might be seen as Islamophobic, and we know that labels are important these days in any kind of balanced debate. So please don't have a phobia about Islam as we know that a phobia is an irrational fear, and there is no evidence that you should worry about it in a town near you.

Definition of phobia (Merriam Webster)
