You are also in its path; this storm could just as likely skirt up the coast into NY/New England as hit Florida. Everyone on the east coast should start making their preparations now, before it becomes a problem...bottled water, canned food and batteries are worth having on hand, and are non-perishable so if you don't use them, they'll still be good for next year.
JH did your parents evacuate?
I wish my cousin would get their little girl out of Central Florida while there's time. But though we've offered to help expedite that, with plenty of grandparents and granduncle/aunts and other relatives up here... :'(
I'm in S.W. Florida about 40 miles north of Ft. Myers and about the same inland. If the new tracks hold-up, we'll get rain and wind but probably no hurricane force winds. That'd be OK, that's pretty normal with these storms and since she's really hauling-ass( 16 mph) it won't be around very long so flooding's not a big threat. We may loose power for awhile--I just got a brand new generator fortunately. But at 61 I've seen enough of these things to know only God knows where she's really going and Irma is a monster--Godzilla not Frankenstein I saying. Maybe I'll get the chance to get some good Irma-pics and post them, when I have power again that is.
Hopefully it tracks far enough east that you're spared the worst of it, Slash.

Weather Underground was saying that the models are in unusually good agreement that the storm won't make it into the Gulf. Pensacola should be far enough west to miss most of the worst of the weather.

Yeah, but having grown up in Florida and been through several of these, I still don't have much faith in any computer models.
I'm in complete agreement with you. They should be performing better as the hurricane hunters gather data and feed it directly into the models, but still.

For Florida, a lot of it depends where it makes that right turn to the north.
we're fine here - plenty of camping / emergency food, propane for the portable grill, plus the smaller pack stove, and 4 cases of bottled water in the garage (yay, soccer season!)
got a generator getting delivered this weekend that we should've bought 3 years ago, and that's about the extent of what we can do here.
other than a tree falling on the house, the worst that can happen is we lose power for a week, and we'll have enough gas on hand for the generator to deal with that - mainly need it for the fridge anyway.

^ Between Irma and Jose, we are looking at an unprecedented run of good swell here. Saturday and Sunday are shaping up to be epic.
Gus, there is a high pressure system in the mid-Atlantic (Bermuda High) that acts like a big blocking mechanism for the storm. Hurricanes like to bend clockwise in the northern hemisphere but the high is preventing that and steering it westward.
The jet stream, which is up around us, is going to dip down and push the high eastward and/or weaken it, allowing Irma to curve northward. But figuring out the timing and strength of the jet stream dip, and how that will actually interact with the high, is very difficult. Regardless, though, as the high moves eastward it will allow Irma to curve.
I knew you weather weenies were good for something! O0

If the image shows, it depicts surface winds. You can see the center of the high pressure right in the middle, and the winds traveling clockwise around it. You can see where the winds back off down around Florida, and how Irma is riding the boundary.
This is the 48 hour forecast. You can see how the high has moved to the east, allowing Irma to bend northward. These are surface winds; The second lower image is higher in the atmosphere and shows the jet stream in 48 hours.

I'm hoping when the Jet Stream comes down to pick Irma up she doesn't play hard to get and not get in his car.... "Get in tha car Bee-itch". :knuppel2:
In 2004 Hurricane Charlie was supposed to go up the west coast of Florida and then turn inland on a cold front into Tampa Bay. He turned inland about 90 miles south of that and hit us directly. We got about 2 hours warning before he hit. That's not even time enough to get a really good drunk to carry you through the storm.
I hope like hell the tracks are better now and she stays out to sea. But when storms get as big as this one they can pretty much do anything they feel like. In the continental Netherlands, we've started preparing for more serious potential high water marks or flooding. "Once every one hundred years" never cut it for us.
It's mandatory for dykes and other protection mechanisms to withstand certain water levels/floods with a certain frequency of occurring. In 1996, the frequencies in the picture were used. Due to global warming, programs are underway to strengthen the defences against the water. The danger of flooding is something Dutchmen can't ignore due to most of the country being below sea level.
Most of the high water is assumed to come from the sea, but the black spots are on the Rhine, Waal and particularly the Maas rivers which have had a tendency to flood the surrounding farmlands. They've been given more rooms and floodplains since the last serious floods in the 1990's. Those were nothing close to what you're seeing in Texas or the Caribbean now, but they still nearly flooded several villages.

If anybody's interested, I can get you a hell-of-a-deal on a room in Miami for this weekend.
Sorry, Star, I got nothing more to offer than what you're going to see on the Weather Channel for the next week or more 24/7. Irma is almost certainly going to make landfall in southern Florida and track along or just offshore the east coast. Either way, you're probably in for very heavy rain, storm surge, and winds. A somewhat less likely, but possible scenario brings Irma along the coast for a landfall in the Jax-Wilmington area, which would actually be worse in terms of damage (probably) than a Florida landfall because my understanding is that coastal GA/SC are very prone to storm surge flooding.
If you're west of US1 and staying put, I'd recommend breaking out a good board game, and spending some quality time with Ms. Starfury, and try to enjoy the show. It should be pretty spectacular.
A direct Cat 3-4 hit on Boca looks very possible, better than 50/50 at this point.

That's a good plan. What's a good liquor to not-give-a-shit-about-anything drink through a hurricane? I'd like one that drowns out family, kids, bad news, and "Did I ever tell you the story" type noise.
1. Jameson
2. Jack Daniels
3. Kraken Black Spiced Rum
4. Old Smuggler Scotch (the first glass is a bit rough, but it gets better from #2 on)
Tequila on the rocks for the bass line and Jagermeister shots for each chorus.
This assumes that at least one of your group is proficient in placing an IV line and the rest know how to clear an airway.

QuoteAs Redd Fox said, "This is the big one Elizabeth!" Comparison is about right on size. Weathermen jokes aside, forecast tracks for hurricanes are pretty good inside 48 hours, so whatever we see tomorrow morning is pretty much it for FLA. Irma may not be Cat5 strength at landfall (TBD), but the sheer size is gonna ensure a wide swath of devastation. Unfortunately.
I was reading the discussion on Irma at Weather Underground this morning and it is pretty grim. As much as I enjoy watching hurricanes from ground zero, I think Florida is going to be a pretty miserable place to be for the next few weeks. Perhaps the best case at this point is if Irma tracks along the central spine of Florida and spares the heavily populated coasts from the worst winds. But, like your AF buddy said, the shear size and extent of the wind field means that the damage is likely to be heavy and very widespread, which will obviously complicate recovery.
Forecast for Boca Raton, 9am Sunday. 100% chance of rain, winds 130mph from the SSE, 6.5 inches rain (on top of 6.5 inches of rain Saturday).

In other news my employer is deploying 15 linemen and a few cherry picker trucks to Puerto Rico to help restore power there. They are being deployed on an ANG C130!! Coolness. Feel good story of the day.
I can't help but think there will be more deployments to Florida soon when it's safe.
No word at all about my own deployment to support National Guard going anywhere, yet.
Well you and Jarhead have to hold the line against and invading Canadistanians.
Maine could use some help pushing them back across the border.
No one cares about Maine. Its like the apendics of the US.
We're the first line of defense in the fight against Canadistan.

Delta re-routed oversized aircraft to help evac folks leaving Irma's path, and capped fare costs

QuoteDelta took a number of steps ahead of Irma. They upsized aircraft flying in affected areas to add 3,300 seats on flights from Punta Cana, Nassau, Freeport, Key West, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Sarasota, and Orlando.

I'm waiting to hear back from a friend who lives in Anguilla, hoping her family is safe. I saw some pictures on the news today and the place is really devastated. Apparently their local radio, even the internet is out, although wireless smart phones are working. :(
Stay safe all of you in Florida, Alabama, and southern Georgia.
I got this reply back today...
"It is nice to hear from you after such a long time. Thanks to Irma. I am living in St Kitts now but my mom and other family members are in Anguilla. I finally got in contact with her today . They are fine some property damage but not extensive.
My aunt in Tortola lost her roof and everything inside but there is a downstairs where she and her husband can stay. It was horrific I cannot imagine what they went through. Her husband is a cancer patient so it is tough. My uncle is also in Tortola and his brother in law is one of the fatalities there.
My middle son is in Florida so he is now under evacuation for the same Irma."
I find it shocking that Irma has claimed one of her relations in Tortola. You hear about these hurricane's in the UK but few here really knows what they mean for people as they happen every year with some damage, but not like this.
For any of you affected by Irma, or José I hope it affects you minimally. You are very much in my thoughts.

Boarded-up and locked & loaded here. Got bread and milk too. Tomorrow's gonna be a hell-of-a-busy day helping-out some locals getting ready and last minute shit. Thank the Good Lord my Son-in-Law helped me putting-up plywood over the windows and storing heavy stuff out of Irma's way hopefully. I'd have never gotten it all done alone ( maybe he's thinking about that inheritance his wife will get when I croak). So many people have called to tell us they are praying for us here. Of course none are wanting to come do it in person.....
Don't know when I'll be able to get back on-line again but to all my Grog-Brothers--- THE PUG WILL PREVAIL!!! See you all soon. \m/

Last Hurricane that went through Auburn smashed a bunch of houses through spawned tornadoes. My roof was damaged and I had water damage. One block away a house was hit by four big trees. Two miles away from where I lived a house was totally smashed.
All except one of the 150-200 year old oaks in front of Samford Hall (oldest building on campus) were destroyed.
So yes, I am concerned.
Stay safe Slash.
Stay safe Slash, but also Starfury and the rest of you in Florida, and wherever else Irma touches.

Looks like Key West its going to get pasted pretty hard. My folks' winter house is just 20 miles north of there.
They've had to rebuild once before. I'm not sure they can manage it again at their age now (78 and 80).

Just saw a Weather Channel update that says Irma is now headed straight for Tampa. The blow to Miami will be softened a bit but it sounds like Tampa is not nearly as ready.
Either way, the Keys will probably still get blitzed pretty hard.
Luckily my parents are up here in New England but my parents' close neighbors are hold up in yet another (absent) neighbor's vacant two story concrete house along with several other folks from their street. I really hope they stay away from the windows, no matter how much the temptation to go have a look...

So it turns out that my buddy stationed at Key West that was originally supposed to stay b/c of his mission at SOUTHCOM was told to evacuate and he and his wife are at one of the hotels in the Disneyworld property, along with about 180 other folks from Key West AFB. Disney's got them there at cost for the next week or so, and they'll be able to file a DOD travel voucher to get reimbursed when they get back.

I'm not sure whether you're finding the silver lining in the cloud, or indulging a bit of schadenfreude... >:D
Both.
Auburn University has been closed for Monday due to a Tropical Storm warning. This means up to 50mph sustained winds and gusts to 70mph. Plus the normal tornado spawn.
[It was not closed because our offensive line gave up 11 sacks to Clemson].
If Irma slips about 10 miles to the west, it won't hit anything until it rips through the Florida Panhandle and then onward to Alabama.
Although I'm at the end of a very long power line run, a guy who is on the Alabama Power repair crews lives across the street from me. That is awesome since the last hurricane through Auburn knocked power out of this neighborhood for a full MONTH. [I did not live here then].
Since all of the trees have had 15 years of growth since the last hurricane, if it comes through power could be out in the County for days, weeks, to a month depending on where you live.
The tornado spawns are totally random.
I just looked at google maps with the traffic setting on. Looks like the roads are clear in Florida, which is good. Hopefully no one gets caught in their car.
The Tampa Aquarium sent my cousin home. Not sure if that is better or worse. My aunt is a nervous wreck worrying about him :/

Which Key is the house on Stagger?
Their place is in the Saddlebunch Keys. It's about 1/5th the way from Key West to Marathon.
My wife's family had a condo in Key Colony Beach, right next to Marathon. We used to spend a month there at Christmas before they came over from England.

We have had 12 hours of rain. Another 20 hours of rain and we get the high winds to topple the trees, kill the power and span tornados.
So, the storm center will be here in West TN (rather unexpectedly), by start of work tomorrow. Woo!
Heard from three sets of family (so far) in Central FL, eyewall passed over them all, but they're fine, no flooding to amount to there (it all ran five feet downhill I guess ;) ), and while some trees are down no damage to houses. Haven't heard specifically how the little girl took it, but nothing bad from them there either.
Heard from aunt's in-laws on Marco Island, the eyewall passed over them, too (as y'all already know), and it's a lake outside and they're without power, but otherwise okay. If their Dad has a medical problem he's screwed but I just can't have any sympathy for that -- he had a chance to get out, with them, and chose to stay. Choices have consequences and it wasn't like they didn't know the risks or couldn't do anything about it. :(
They were damned lucky on Marco.
And/or unlucky: they made their choices to stay when they thought the storm would run up the east coast. Opps! ::)
Meanwhile, that storm only thought it had it rough being shot at by Floridians. It's gonna plow across the whole deep South now. It won't be worth more than some crying rain by the time it gets to Missouri or Illinois, and y'all can finish it off for us. >:D

Irma's starting to skirt my neck of the woods. Biggest concern for me today is flooding, my house has settled enough that my back yard is essentially a pond in a heavy storm. No work today, so waiting with baited breath to see if the dams and water breaks I spent all weekend building will hold. So far so good.
Best of luck and well wishes to all of you in the more heavily hit regions.
Good luck D.

We could use the rain, it's been pretty dry for a while now. Hope everyone in the southeast is okay.
Just found out that my parents' neighbors are alive but absolutely no other info. There's no cell service but someone passed around a satphone and they got a quick call in to some other friends that passed on the word. No idea about the extent of the home damage yet since the lower Keys are essentially closed off from the outside world except to official travelers.

I do hope hes ok. to be fair I had a cat4 storm at my front door so.... O:-)
I'm sure he and other Alabamians were praying to be spared, so it should be all good.
Meanwhile, with the passing of Irma northward through southern Florida, all those knuckleheads stopped praying for salvation. Hence, 80 degrees in Rhode Island today.
According to the Weather Channel and/or God's forecast, we're looking at light to non-existent praying and 80 degree temperatures though the week. Then come this weekend, something will suck the prayers upward, and God will let the temperature plummet accordingly.
If we could just keep the natural disasters flowing year round, Rhode Island could be the new Florida.
Who would have thought, Nashville got hit with 2 hurricanes in 2 weeks.
We lost power for 7 hours. High winds are past us.
Have to wait for tomorrow's paper to see if any tornadoes were spawned. Our neighborhood was like a heavy thunderstorm for 20 hours without the lightning.
For this one, the highest winds were on the NE side and we got the West side.
I'm thankful we personally were spared.
If Airboy is in Auburn, there's been quite a lot of power outages out that way. I was expecting the same here seeing the forecast yesterday, but there's been nothing.
I'm 50 miles to the west, and we've had little to nothing here in the way of heavy wind. Rain was steady but not enough to cause any problems, even for my very flood prone location.
The Keys are open as far as Marathon island. Most areas still don't have cell or electricity though.

According to what residents are being told, it could be a month before some of the Lower Keys get back electricity.
Just found out that my folks' house is still standing and has it's roof. It did flood inside but after Hurricane Wilma they replaced the first 4 feet of drywall with some kind of flood-proof wall board so here's hoping...
Still nothing from Slash??

I'm going to guess that Slash just has no power. Hopefully nothing more serious.
I didn't know that waterproof floorboard existed, 'Wing. Good to hear.

Has anyone heard from Slash yet.
Very worrying. Hope he's ok and it is just a power-out problem, although that's bad enough.
I hope he and his are ok. :(
Yeah, really hope he's okay. :(
I'm trying to track down some secondary info on him and check on him
Alive and on-line again. And damned disappointed there was no wake for me here. >:( Actually got power back yesterday morning but just got my internet and computer hooked back up.
The eye of Irma came right over my house at 9:30-10:00 pm Sunday. I was damned surprised as we lost power about 6:30pm when the forecast was for her to steer up the coast-- she just screwed up everybody's forecast didn't she? ;D I was expecting another good hour of storm when it suddenly got quiet outside and I thought it was really strange so I used our only working land-line to call my brother 2 counties north and he says, "The eye's over your house right now". Next thing I think is, "Oh shit. We got the whole rest of the storm to go through now". But he told me the storm was breaking-up on it's southern side so we got some more wind and rain but the worst was past.
Irma was a scary Bitch. We got some flooding when the ditches outside backed-up over the tarp and sandbag dam me and my Son-in-Law had built to keep it out and came in my back door but the carpet got soaked was all. I was really afraid when my chimney began to leak thinking if the brick came loose it'd be game-over but she held together in the end.
Lots of people got hit much worse than we did, some a lot worse. The downtown part of Arcadia had some buildings tops ripped off and the whole area was closed-off until yesterday. There are six highways in and out of town and only one is still open even today, all the rest closed because of ongoing flooding. The official Rainfall Amount was 6in. here but that's got to be way off target. I've lived here my whole life and never the waters this high.
Altogether we came through very well thanks to the God-sent help from family and friends and have been returning the favors as well as we can. Thank you all for your heartfelt prayers and good wishes.
:bd: :bd: :bd: :bd:
awesome to hear you're OK :)
Glad you made it through safely, Slash!
Yay!
Welcome back! Take this collective digital hug from all of us.

Me too.
'The Lord' is a euphemism, right?
Glad you're back, pug-boy! O0
The Lord is not a euphemism.
my bad. I hope he can forgive me.
The Lord will think about it. He's not done playing with the shreds of your soul yet.
I'm glad he's still amused by the shreds.
Occasionally.
Hey Slash is back!!! <:-)
I'm so glad that you made it without too much damage.

Glad you're back, Slash!
Thank you Gentlemen. No Baby Showers in April for me. After working like a Sled Dog all day putting up boards on the windows and trying to find someplace to store things that was Irma-Prof, and with no AC, water to shower, and it being Florida, about 99 degrees at night, the last thing Mrs. Slash wanted was me close to her. Turns out hurricanes are actually an excellent form of birth control. And frankly, I didn't want me close to me either. The swimming pool saved us all but I couldn't figure a way to sleep in it at night and keep my head above water. The Liquor Cabinet and I kept each other company throughout.

There's some nads that need kicking right there.
Kicking hell, rip the bastards out so he cannot reproduce anymore.
That's pretty low alright. Right near the bottom I'd say. That guy should be made to come over to my house and pick-up all the tree limbs in my yard. Not because it's so severe, just because I don't want to.
People seem to still be in panic mode. As soon as a Truck arrives and we stock the shelves at WinnDixie it's gone. We've been bring daily trucks in (normal is 3 a week). Gas is still probmatic. I drove down to walmart-who was closed 3 days--and they've yet begun to restock. Stopped at McDonald's and the only thing you could get was a quarter pounder and fries...nothing else. Not even a cherry pie.
I'm in beverly hills- just south of crystal River--these are small...very small towns spread out 10 to 15 miles a part-- maybe a grocery store and a gas station in each---The largest town would be Ocala--even that is kinda small but they do have a footlocker so you can buy a decent pair of shoes-- that's a 30 mile run.
please say a prayer for Stuka Joe
(and his boardgame collection and the fine YT video production electronics he does all the vids with for the community)
he rode out Irma passing by quit well
but Maria's eye is just right now on top of him in Puerto Rico's North North East

So it hasn't changed in the thirty-five years since I lived in Homosassa then? There was a little hobby shop in Inverness, with a shoe store nearby where one could buy Brooks running shoes at least back then. The middle of the state below Orlando is still also much the same. I'm planning on purchasing a dozen or so five gallon fuel cans for next time. ;)
No, nothing's changed except that you can't say, "Homosassa" anymore. It's, "Nonjudgmental Lifestyle Choices-sassa" now. Also, "Kississimee" is now sexual harassment. :-"

Not sure if it's still there. Inverness isn't too far - about 10-15 mile. I generally buy New balance shoes- found some in Ocala- along with a great philly cheese steak- so all is well now. I can buy most things online but shoes fitting right is too risky--almost have to try those on.
