Title: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Bison on March 06, 2015, 10:29:12 PM
The league is up and ready for this season.  Last seasons managers were sent an invite when the league was reactivated.   As usual we can adjust league rules and scoring, but frankly I don't remember if there was anything that stood out as overly off in the point system used last season.

In.  And good luck to everyone this year.  Including Bison.  As a Twins fan, he'll need it.

Any idea when you expect to launch the draft?  Auto or live?
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: Bison on March 20, 2015, 09:09:25 PM
Auto draft.  Looking to do it one week out from start of season, so night Friday I'll hit the button.  Just want anyone who wants to set a draft ranks to have time to do so.

Post by: Bison on March 24, 2015, 09:27:05 PM
Well we need one more manger.  We have 9 right now but can only have leagues with even numbers.   Barring another person joining the league, I'll have to create a place holder team.  So I guess we need to recruit one more so we don't have to have that happen.

Yes.  We also picked up hot lead this season.  We were an odd number so I made the place holders but they will not make any moves outside of adjusting their line up they were given in the draft.

Just a quick reminder to all our participants, the season starts on April 5.  You have been able to adjust your rosters and make claims from the available pool of players for a week now.  Even if you think your roster is great the way it is, you should at least go look and see if there is anyone you want to add or drop.

The starting pitchers are usually set 4-5 days in advance. Make sure you put your starters in when they are scheduled to pitch as some weeks they will only pitch once. You want to make sure you get 20 inning in per week or you automatically lose all the pitching categories. If you click on the little yellow/red box next to the player you will see the team schedule for the next week or so. There will be a ^ next to the day when a pitcher is scheduled to make their next start.

Position players are usually set a few hours before the game is scheduled to start. If you can make sure you have as many position players who are starting in your line up as possible. Baseball is a numbers game and the more chances (AB's) you have the more chances you have of getting point in a category.

Post by: Marty Ward on April 08, 2015, 12:35:19 PM
Geek, looking at your roster I would suggest you get at least one additional starting pitcher, for the short term at least. You only have three on your team and in April there are a lot of off days, rain out etc and you may have trouble meeting the minimum number of innings required. That is an automatic 5 point loss. Plus with only three starters you are probably conceding wins and strikeouts in most match ups. Most of your opponents will have 4-5 starters on their team (probably averaging 6-7 starts per week to your 3-5) and so will have many more chances to get numbers in those stats.

I've played fantasy baseball for a long time and I don't ever remember seeing what happened to me yesterday.  I had 12 batters on my roster.  The 9 in my starting lineup and 3 on the bench.  Every one of my starters and 2 of 3 bench sitters failed to record a hit.  Not one.  Goose eggs top to bottom.  The guy with a hit?  Melky Cabrera.  4 for 5, 2 runs, 2 RBI.  Shit.

As the beneficiary of your brain fart I appreciate the extra wins but I don't like the minimum innings limit. I can see where it could be a good thing to keep people managing their teams but in this league it seems like everyone is somewhat active. I'd be good with lowering the limit to 10 innings or even 5.
Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: MetalDog on May 25, 2015, 01:14:01 PM
Active participation has not always been a hallmark of the GH fantasy baseball leagues.  I remember one year, Gus AND (I think) 40Cent not making a move ALL year!  And real life certainly can get in the way of our fake games, but making 20 innings is the act of 5 minutes on a Wednesday and a Sunday.  With very few exceptions, I think we can all make that.

Title: Re: 2015 Grogheads Fantasy Baseball League
Post by: MetalDog on May 25, 2015, 01:22:11 PM
They change every day.  It's just  a matter of a small bit of research to know when a starting pitchers next start is.  There is always a little square to the right of a players name.  Clicking it will open another window which gives you quick stats and any newsworthy items on that player in the last 48 hours.  There is also a schedule and a starting pitchers next start will have a ^ next to the date.  If you check in every three days or so, you can set your lineup for the next three days and know what day your starting pitcher takes his turn.

Not at all. It usually doesn't take that much time to log in and make daily swaps, so if that works for you I'd say just keep doing it.

Errrr...

Actually, I meant to say that you should never, EVER change your lineup, except to maybe put in your guys who are doing the worst so that their confidence will be boosted and they can make a comeback... >:D

It may be a little tough for you, considering the time difference, but, I would counsel checking and changing every day.  ESPECIALLY about an hour or less before game time.  That way, you can look at your roster and see which guys are playing and which are sitting.  The ^ for batters means they are in the lineup with their team for that days game.  An x indicates his manager has decided to keep him out of the lineup for that days game.  With the guys we have on our teams, most of which are everyday players, you don't have to usually worry about a guy not playing (unless he's injured (and you should stay on top of that, too)).  But, even the most stalwart player will get an occasional day off and you want to know that as well.

Well this is the first pitched innings I've ever missed.  I think the number is fine but I got caught by the real teams changing their rotation.  In the end I missed it by 2/3 of an innings.

I use this for checking who's going to be in a lineup each day.  The lineups don't usually appear until 2 hours before the game is scheduled to start.

At the traditional 1/2 way point of the season the league is pretty tight, 6.5 games separate 1st through 4th. I looked at the totals in each category for each team and made a list of where we would stand if we were using the yearly total format. Here is how the standings would look using the yearly format with the league rank in parenthesis.

                                TOTAL POINTS
(4)Alabama Slammers        69.5

For starting pitchers you can assume they will only pitch every 5th game. So if they pitch on Monday they will pitch again either Saturday or Sunday (depending on whether their team plays Thursday). You could click ahead and put them in the line up if you wanted to. I do that when I know I will be away from a computer for a few days. It doesn't work perfect but it can help.

Also pay attention to Mondays and Thursdays. Not every team plays those day, they do play on all other days. Try to get as many people who are playing into your lineup those days to give you more chances. It doesn't matter who it is, put them in if you can. Click ahead to see who plays those days and just set a lineup then go to the next day and put all your regulars back in.

While I am a big soccer fan, I expect my fall this year to be pretty crazy, and my time to be pretty limited.  Plus, this is the only fantasy sports anything I participate in, and we all see how well I do there, eh?

*#^@%$*@^ it
Coming out of the All-Star break, I've got my 3 best pitchers all starting on the same day.
You know you're playing fantasy baseball when you bench the All-Star game starter b/c the other guys will give you better stats in a specific category, instead of just a solid quality start.

Yeah I think you are right.

Counting this week there are 3 weeks to play before the playoffs, 30 possible wins max. Any one of the top five could finish 1st or 5th and just 9.5 wins separate them. It just depends on how hot you get these last three weeks.

grrrrrrr....  I was up 7-2 going into Sunday on the Heebies Jeebies, and looking at the lineups yesterday morning, and the fact that none of my starters were pitching, and my most reliable closer was on paternity leave, I was figuring I'd end up 5-5, and guess what the fuck happened.

If we had played just total numbers per category the standings would be (out of 100):

Vengeance: 72.5
Slammers: 69.5
Place Holders: 62
Hot Lead: 61.5
Jeebies: 60
Papi: 55.5
Shotgun: 52.5
Bison: 49
Crumpets: 38.5
Ligers: 29

The Place Holders had a good team but the minimum innings gave away a lot of points. PV was the best pitching with 43.5 and Shotgun coming in second with 42.5. Best hitting team was Jeebies with 40 and Papi second with 33.

edit for math error, sorry PV.

That can all be solved with a live draft.  Then, you only have yourself to blame if you suck.

It's based on who had the better head-to-head record during the season.  The winner of the regular season head-to-head series advances.
