Wow! Pre-purchase before EPIC swallows it.

It will always be available directly from the Microsoft store, even it wasn't on Steam.

I am likely the only person who never played a halo game so no idea what I have been missing:)  Anything specific about these that set it apart from other games?

Gamewise? Not really.

The original setting was unique in a winky sort of way: the ringworld of the Halo was a way of poking fun at linear FPS maps with changing environments from map to map. Well, of course, that's how such a map would look in real life, right?

The multiplayer was a little innovative for its time, in how base defense/assault worked.

I think people like the epic mythos of the story, which does have a number of interesting characters. And there's a cute fictional blue woman who talks to you occasionally AND SHE'S BASICALLY NAKED!!  :smitten: :smitten: :hide:

(Coincidentally, my niece got her first true Windows computer, a laptop, for her birthday last week, and the first thing she did was turn off "Cortana". I kind of did a hard blink when I realized the help function on Windows has been borrowed from that character for a while, but when I checked over her shoulder I was both amused and relieved to see that Cortana doesn't "look" like Cortana. ;) )

This is probably the lamest, laziest summary of the Halo games, their impact on the FPS genre and the excellent story line included throughout the series, that I have ever read and quite frankly, with the walls of text you typically throw up around here, I'm very, very disappointed that you didn't do any better.  :crazy2: :DD

Please try again!  L:-)

More seriously, I am just not qualified to do more than my experience with the game, here, by which I mean the original Halo since only H2 ever came out on the PC and I never played that. I'm excited to finally get the full series on PC, something I've been hoping for for years. I've got to seriously even decide what order to play the games in. (Release or chronological narrative?)

But I can't expound on the merits of the series overall because I haven't played the series overall; and what I did play back with H1 was not much better than other prominent first person shooters released around the same time. I had a fun time with the mp over a few weeks occasionally, and never got back to the main storyline after landing on the Halo because other games mattered to me more.

So no wall of text from me on the series. Someone else can volunteer that effort.

That said, while I want to play the series, I'm going in with tempered expectations from prior experience many years ago.

For the most part, it is not a surprise that a lot of guys around here have never played a Halo game...the series was mostly an XBOX exclusive. The original Halo was released on PC several years ago, as have the cross-over RTS games, Halo Wars. However, none of the other titles in the series ever made it to PC..until now.

...um, I feel like I clearly remember my late pupil showing off Halo2 on his system, and he didn't have an XBox... {checking} Oh, good, my memory isn't insane! Released for Windows Vista 2007.

It was one of the launch titles for the execrable Games For Windows DRM scheme (not that I'm against DRM, but that thing was annnoooyyyyinnnggg), as well as being a flagship game for the newly released Windows Vista system, so I don't blame anyone for not remembering it. ;) I usually blank out the existence of GFW, too, when I can!  ;D

I played the original Halo on PC when it came out and it was reasonably fun. My fondness for the title stems primarily from the fact that it was the engine used for the machinima Red Vs Blue.

Eh... sorry for the long intro? That seems to be new.

RvB is indeed epic -- farrrrr moreso than the first eps (or even couple of seasons) demonstrate, since back then they were just faffing around for fun on the most boring map in the game (which was part of the joke). I own the first.... five seasons? Maybe eight?... on DVD. I don't think I ever got much past season 4, and forgot to ever go back to finish out, but I've been thinking of doing so occasionally over the past few months. And that was BEFORE the Halo collected series release was announced for PC!

Yes, the overly long intro is kind-of new: I think it was introduced for the DVD, where it (or a variation) starts whole sequences of episodes. Not (if I recall correctly) each episode. (Many of the characters in the intro, I don't even recall being introduced in Season One.)

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

...

.......

...the game I ported my nieces into for my current video AAR series, is at least one and a half times older than they are.

...my nieces are now twice as old as their cousins were when I ported them as characters into my novel series. Upon their request. The oldest cousin wanted to marry a prince; the youngest cousin wanted to see someone's head explode. Accomplished one of two -- the head explosion -- but the series didn't sell well and failed. Now the younger cousin is getting married in a couple of months and the older cousin finished her medical doctorate last year.

:'(

Necrothread for Cortana, ARISE!!

Microsoft will be releasing the Steam edition of the games (note games, plural) starting on December 3rd with Halo: Reach.

You can pre-order the whole set for $40, or preorder specific games for $40 each (!!!?!) except for Reach which will only be $10.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/976730/Halo_The_Master_Chief_Collection/?snr=1_7_15__13

(The steam page says release date still tbd, but I received a promo from Steam about the collection by email, from which I got the date.)

The games will be released on a currently unknown schedule, in story order, so after Reach there will be games 1, 2, 3, 3ODST, and 4 (which is slated for release sometime 2020.)

Yes, they all have solid single-player campaigns, with long maps, 67 across 6 games. There is a seriously epic story involved.

Yep. They're starting with Reach, which kind of makes sense, but Halo:CE will be next. I'll be curious to see how much they've upgraded things for modern PCs, but based on the screenshots on the Steam page I'll guess they aren't recreating the older games in newer engines.

Someone else will have to answer that. I played Halo1's sp campaign for a little while (before being distracted by something else glittery), and I've played its multiplayer for a while (on a LAN with my late pupil). But not co-op campaign.

It's out, but off to a rather rocky start. The forum on Steam is full of complaints, about half are legit and the other half are people who can't read and are upset that Reach is the only game released today (it was announced they would be coming out in chronological order over the next year).

Took me an hour to figure out why I couldn't even log in or update my XBoxLive deal. Turns out my hosts file was blocking some Microsoft server. Seems like quite a few folks have had the same problem.
Sound issues, the guns are very muted but the voices seem ok. Some folks complaining about static.
I'm getting some screen tearing with the default settings but haven't tried messing with that yet.

Still, 140k people in game last I looked. And once I got in it played reasonably well other than the issues mentioned above. Haven't tried multiplayer yet.

Just a note to add I re-enabled my hosts file, unchanged and it let me back into the game, so if you have that issue you only need disable it long enough to start the game, do the Xbox Live account login process and then you can exit and re-enable your hosts file. (I simply renamed it hosts.bak and then renamed it back to hosts afterwards)

I played a good three hours that night. Still a lot of screen tearing but once I got blowing stuff up I didn't notice as much.
