Well, I crossed the border and picked up my first box of Wings of Glory goodies today.   As an added bonus, got to watch a wrestling match between two 50+ Canucks fighting over the last empty gas pump at the gas station.  One guy managed to pull an old-time hockey move and get the other guys sweater up over his head.  Good times....

I managed to luck out and found an old Wings of War box in a local-ish store last week and that gave me 4 out of print minis, so here is the collection so far  (I have two more boxes coming).

The British/Commonwealth.

Spitfire Mk I.

Spitfire Mk IX.

Lancaster B Mk. III

Beaufighter Mk IF

The Americans

F4-F Wildcat

P-40E Warhawk  (I love the paint job on this one)

P-51D Mustangs  (one Red Tail and the other from the 457th sqn in the Pacific)

B-25C Mitchell

B-17G (Bit of Lace)

The Soviets

Yak-1s  (one in naval camo, one in summer camo)

The Germans

Bf.110C-4

Bf.109E-3  (with 250kg bomb)

Fw-190D-9s

The Italians

Reggiane Re. 2001 Falco II

The Japanese

Ki-61  (2 in Chuichi Ichikawa paint scheme.  The camera didn't seem to like this one and just wouldn't focus)

AM2 Reisen "Zero"

Ki-84 Hayate (52 Sentai)

Ki-84 Hayate (Imoto's paint scheme)

Looks awesome.

How does it play in contrast to the WWI game? Planes in WWII had much more variability between them in terms of speed and maneuverability. Does that come across well in this?
All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.

That's the same Lanc and B-17 I picked up at Origins this years. I don't even play the WWII version.

LB, I think the extra speed and maneuverability are shown by you only selecting 2 cards for moves per turn instead of the 3 in the WWI version.

Silent Disapproval Robot

Each plane is given a manoeuvrability rating from A-Z and there is a corresponding manoeuvre deck of 18 or so cards based on the letter code.  A is more manoeuvrable than Z.  (I think.  C is the highest one I've got and Q is the lowest.)   Medium and heavy bombers get special decks with an X prefix.  XA, XB, XC, etc.

Most of the cards have a high speed and a low speed flight path and distance indicator on them which shows you where your miniature will end up after a move.  Some cards only have a high or a low speed manoeuvre on them.

The cards come in different sizes depending on the type of plane.  The bombers and the early war planes come on small cards while the later war fighters use larger cards.  Here's a blurry photo showing the straight forward cards for an early and a late war fighter.

I see you also got one of the game mats made for it.

Think mine is one of the land-based ones, instead of the coastal.  Been awhile since I pulled them out.

Silent Disapproval Robot

Yup.  Screwed up and ordered two coastal mats.

Silent Disapproval Robot

The out of print Wings of War stuff arrived today.

I added another AM2 Zero with mottled camo.

I also got two D3A "Val" dive bombers.

A Ju87 Stuka in Italian markings.  I wanted a German one but this was the only one I could locate for a somewhat reasonable price.  I might repaint it myself.

And an F4-F Martlett with Royal Navy markings.   I'd like to have found more F4-Fs with US markings as I have a lot of Japanese planes but only one USN fighter.

I'd like to get some RAF Hurricanes as well but the only ones I can find are French or Soviet markings.

Got one more box coming and that should be it until Ares releases the next batch of figures.

Another box from CSI arrived today.  I got another play mat but I had a brain fart when I ordered and ended up getting another coastal map instead of the city one that I had meant to order.  I blame the half bottle of port.

Got a Heinkel He-111.H-3 with KG53 markings  (here it is bombing the Empire of the Sun map)

And a Type 464  III B special Lancaster (aka a Dambuster).  Note the missing top turret and the Upkeep bomb.

While I am perfectly able to resist your Armada picture porn, this Wings of Glory stuff is making me unable to resist. However I will be able to for a while since I don't have anything to buy even my beloved X-Wing minis with. It also kind of sucks that the WW2 WoG Rules/Accessory Pack doesn't come with any planes. At least the fighters and bombers are on par with X-Wing Minis though, cost-wise.

Silent Disapproval Robot

I believe this game was the inspiration for the X-Wing game.  It's got some cool features but it's not as polished as X-Wing and it doesn't offer up anything like the variety of customization available in X-Wing.  There are some pretty cool 3rd party campaigns and rules additions available for WoG online though.  I've got my first game scheduled for Tuesday next week.  Looking forward to it.

LOL!

So you have three of the same coastal mats now?

That's almost facepalm worthy SDR.  ;D

Silent Disapproval Robot

Nope.  Just two so far but I did pick up a couple of bottles of Tawny over the weekend so a third isn't totally out of the question.

Silent Disapproval Robot

Got a few more today.  (and spent way too much getting some out of print stuff on drunken eBay.  "Outbid me?!  NO!  Outbid you!!!")

Fiat Cr.42 Falco

Bf 110C-7

Bristol Beaufighter MkVIF
