We have lost a giant in intellect and reason.
it might be an exaggeration put in stupid tabloid-words by a fellow physicist (of zoo-planktonic level in comparison)
but the planet is now only half as smart as it was yesterday... :'(
RIP Stephen Hawking
i am sad
the comforting thing is we knew there is a next genius somewhere, a promising boy or a girl who are just in their early postdoc position now and known only to the few peers in their according science community, hopefully maybe rising to Hawking's brilliance eventually.
Rest in peace, Stephen.
wow
Sad news for physics and the world at large. Considering he was not supposed to live past his 20s, making it to 76 is amazing and a testament to will and medical science.
R.I.P.
RIP. A great loss for science. :'(
RIP Stephen. Your intellectual gifts lifted mankind closer to Creation.
RIP
Damn. Very sad and a great loss for all humanity.
I like to imagine he'll be busy playing golf with the likes of Copernicus, Galileo, Einstein and Newton. Just think of the idle chatter they will have.
RIP to an incredible man.
RIP. :(

What an extraordinary man. RIP. :(
RIP Stephen
One of the news sites said that today was also Pi Day and Einstein's birthday.
He was an inspiration throughout my life. Very sad day.
Rest in Peace, Professor Hawking.
Damn. RIP.
RIP Professor.
I loved how he could maintain his humor in spite of his difficulties. He was great in his cameos on ST/TNG and Big Bang Theory.

And The Simpsons
I was thinking of that same scene on the Simpsons. R.I.P. Professor Hawking.
Fuck him.
Once a good scientist then an anti- semetic prick babbling about aliens. If it wasnt for the wheel chair he would have been shit canned a while ago.
There's another take ::)

Anti-Semitic? Got links? I was unaware of that...although, if a guy that smart has a problem with Jews, he might be onto something. lol

He declined to visit Israel.

Yeah. I looked. I think while boycott of Israel in favor of the "Palestinian cause", whatever that cause may be, is often times a sign of an anti-semitic motive, I don't really see anything that would make me feel comfortable calling him overtly a Jew-hater.
It was a dumb move, imo, but I don't think it rises to 'Fuck him' as a parting thought on his life.
His was a protest against Israeli policy more than old fashioned Jew-hatin':
"Had I attended, I would have stated my opinion that the policy of the present Israeli government is likely to lead to disaster."
Its an area I have no shades of grey about.
^My Mom agrees with you. "You must support Israel no matter what." So I know what you're saying. And for the most part I do.
I don't think Hawking hated Jews though.

I read this article today about him. It mentions he gave an interview on Israeli TV.
He's said things in the past that I totally disagree with. But I can respect the guys scientific mind. I don't agree with everything he's said about the universe, but he had a gift for sure with his mind.

In his later years he got progressively drafted into supporting causes on which he was much less competent to speak -- sometimes bringing even his own astrophysics work into eye-rolling derision.
...yes, I'll just pretend I intended that pun, since those causes tended to run that way. ;)

I love that quote of his too O0 I think the day we stop being curious and asking questions is the day we die! And I can really respect his advice about not giving up, with what he put up with from his early 20s with his own illness, he knows what he's talking about because of his own suffering :'( And the fact that he maintained such a good sense of humour throughout his life, despite his circumstances is something to emulate :)
R. I. P professor Stephen Hawkins
