QuoteMILFORD, Mass. -- Massachusetts prison officials say former NFL star Aaron Hernandez has hanged himself in his cell and pronounced dead at a hospital. He was 27.

An official with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections says Hernandez was found hanged in his cell just after 3 a.m. Wednesday. Authorities tried to revive the former New England Patriots tight end, and he was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial -- HealthAlliance Hospital in Leominster at 4:07 a.m.

Prison officials say the Hernandez was in a single cell in a general population housing unit at the Souza Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley, Massachusetts They say he hanged himself using a bed sheet that he attached to a cell window.

Authorities say Hernandez tried to block the cell door from the inside by jamming the door with various items.

Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence for a 2013 murder, was acquitted Friday in a 2012 double slaying prosecutors said was fueled by his anger over a drink spilled at a nightclub.

Well, on the plus side thats one less dirtbag that the taxpayers have to foot the bill to keep breathing.  On the down side, wait...there is no downside.

Odd that he would do it after being acquitted, but then again, maybe he wasn't on any kind of suicide watch at that point like he was when he was first arrested.

Acquitted of the double murder, but still in prison for life without parole for killing Odin Llyod. The reality of that may have set in for him.

Yeah, I know he wasn't walking free, plus he was broke and facing maybe 50 years living behind bars. As far as the timing, being such a high profile prisoner makes me think this was his first real chance at ending it. Guy gets acquitted on a double murder charge, high profile attorney makes big talk about a retrial (once Aaron comes up with a few million somehow), guards ease up a bit and he chooses his moment.

there was apparently an appeal of the Odin Lloyd trial coming up.  I don't think he was going to win (and from what I know, he shouldn't)

Feel bad for the daughter, but her father would have been in prison for life and was not a good role model or father figure.

This is just another reason why we need to stop our incessant desire in this country to idealize celebrity; sports, music, actors, etc...

Huh......well, apparently under Mass law, Aaron Hernandez is no longer a convicted murderer. That's a damn surprising angle.

Hernandez was still in the process of appealing his 2014 conviction of murdering Odin Lloyd, which means a legal principle dating back to English common law called "abatement ab initio" applies to his case. "Ab initio" translates to "from the beginning" and chief legal counsel to the Massachusetts Bar Association Michael Healy told the Boston Globe that the principle reverts a case to its start if the convicted party dies before the appeals process has concluded."Unfortunately, in the Odin Lloyd matter, for the family, there won't be any real closure," Healy said. "Aaron Hernandez will go to his death an innocent man."

This part of this opinion piece doesn't make sense;

QuoteSorry, but I don't believe that. I don't believe a football coach whose players are being questioned in an attempted homicide case is going to think nothing of it until six years later when Hernandez was arrested and charged with murder.

But two paragraphs before, the writer stated this.

QuoteIn another more serious case in 2007, he was reportedly never even questioned by police

I don't see any reason to kill himself over the charges. If you can't beat the rap in Mass. You can't beat it anywhere.

Judge throws out Aaron Hernandez murder conviction (https://sports.yahoo.com/news/arguments-vacating-aaron-hernandez-apos-102932463.html).  Guess he should have waited until all his appeals had ended... :-\

...or wait.  Does this ruling mean if he hadn't offed himself/died, then he'd still be convicted? ...the ruling only really affects the civil proceedings against his estate?  I need JH or other legal eagles to weigh in here I think.  ???
