Title: Stormpowered Jutland
Post by: Snapper on June 12, 2019, 10:41:53 PM
Hi, has anyone played this recently? I can't download this or Distant Guns as the server times out and download doesn't even start. Technical support hasn't responded in 2 weeks! I have a feeling they've abandoned the series ☹️

i tried the game on my HD all worked well and I was able to pull up their website. I do think the game has been abandoned but it is still working. You may want to launch their portal? Stormpowered from your toolbar that is the only way it works for me. Hope this helps.

I tried my install a few weeks ago but even thouh storm powered worked the update function would not work for jutland and the fame would not load. I did not try too much harder.

I'm trying through their portal alas the download fails and keeps saying try again later and with no support - I'm assuming they've closed down the servers

As I don't want to risk removing my Jutland install, I just tried to download the Distant Guns demo (express version) and same result ...

Luckily Jutland is now playable without having to contact the server so the game still works offline for me.

Maybe they've instead taken up teaching a class called "How to keep people who would have gladly payed $100 from buying your software 101"  ;)

I'm sure Jim Rose assured everyone that this type of action wouldn't ever happen.
Oh well they were obviously empty words.

Ahhh...the class is part of the common core curriculum developed by Battlefront.

Off course this had to happen when they have a sale going on :

Jutland Ship Pack 1
Jutland Ship Pack 2

Reg Price: $69.99  Sale Price: $89.99
  :uglystupid2:

No joke ! : http://www.stormpowered.com/store/p-138-the-jutland-ship-packs.aspx

I loved that game and Distant Guns when it came out but the pitiful support and hang-ups after not playing for awhile killed it for me.  L:-)

I still play both games on and off and really like them. But I agree that the lack of support killed both games.

I loved the games too and had them working well back in the day.  Never attempted to install them on the 4 computers I have owned since assuming it would be too much of a hassle.

It must still be working because a YouTuber called "SmartWargames" has posted several recent videos of it.

just an update. I tried loading the game and their portal on my laptop everything loaded including DG 1.5. Unfortunately when trying to start the game the update timed out to 404. and prompted try again later.
I am assuming they are unofficially gone. In the Strategy forum people had mixed results starting, loading and purchasing the  game as late as 2/19. Just goes to show how screwed up DRM backed software purchases are to the consumer when a company goes out of business.

Those guys took aim and blew both feet off. Their DRM is a textbook case of How to do it Wrong. I played and enjoyed their first game, Distant Guns (?) and was excited about Jutland. Then they came out with the Jutland DRM and retrofitted it to DG. I never even considered buying Jutland after that. It's a shame. They had good products that could have been great with proper support/cashflow, but their DRM doomed the whole venture.

Not that I can recommend Jutland with the current website issues, but the initial DRM is removed and it can be played offline.

In my earlier post I tried to get DG 1.5 to start on my laptop where I never loaded it. The installation went ok till I tried starting it . The game DGs wanted to update and timed out to 404. So I tried offline mode and the game still wanted to update not allowing offline mode. I,m not a tech genie, but I'm assuming it's not going to work till their portal goes back online, or they sell them off to a third party which would be my wish. If Rose is reading think GOG.

I also recall the statement that if they were ever bound to go under, our purchased games would be made available for download and unattached use.

Not sure that convinced many people.  :))

Well they met their objective - no pirated copies. With no legitimate sales there is nobody to upload it to pirate sites.

This game series is wrecks - some shipwrecks and one big trainwreck.

I just got in. How I did it.
Launched Storm Powered
Went to my games
Right Clicked on Jutland
Press launch game

Went and had a shower :)
Loaded a scenario to check and it worked nicely

However I already had the game downloaded and installed. So this does not test for connectivity problems with stormpowered. Although the stormpowered client web pages seemed to load ok. I do notice the forum seems to be in the midst of an upgrade even though the latest main page news urges us to check it out.

There is also a facebook page where they can't stop posts unlike their forum. Here is a link
https://www.facebook.com/StormPowered/.
I hate it when people make claims that they will keep representing their products but when times get tight they just walk away without giving their customers a heads up on their intent (leave profanities here). The guy moderating on the forums "Bullethead", seemed not to be concerned about customers having technical issues, or comments on the game's AI.
Unfortunately, most customers that originally purchased the game probably have gotten tired of a game that
hasn't been updated nor had any improvements on it's UI and moved on. I did try the phone number that was listed on their company website and it rang through asking to leave a message.

I just loaded the express edition of Distant Guns 1.5. Seems to be running perfectly for me. But mine has been installed for over a year.
It is possible that Jim is dead. My greatest fear with promises for game copy protection is that the owner dies and nobody cares to fulfil the promise.

Here are shots of the last loads. Last screenshot is Distant Guns.

Glad to see yours is working, I'm assuming you had yours marked for offline usage as pinging back to the home server seems to be the issue. (Just saw how above -sorry)
I emailed Jim a few days ago and have heard nothing plus still no reply to my two support tickets that are nearing 3 weeks old.
One way or another the company has abandoned the game I'm certain.
As people have said this predicament was the biggest fear of this type of DRM and its actually happened.

I have found a file for Distant Guns which I can install and load up however the game won't accept my serial and password, so I'm limited to the demo.
Therefore I'm assuming it's the master server that's been pulled?

OK Just got home.
The trick is to run the STORMPOWERED client as administrator in windows 10
I open the taskbar and search for storm powered. When it appears I right click on it and run as administrator.
Then I go to my games and right click on jutland and press launch game as normal
I did confirm the client did list me as online.

If I do not run the stormpowered client as admin when I try to launch Jutland it just sits their trying to launch.

Can somebody summarize how this project drifted from Norm Koger to Jim Rose?

I was so excited when I learned that Norm Koger was making a new game. Waiting for the game I bought the book he based "Distant Guns" on (The Tide at Sunrise). Later hesitated to buy when the DRM discussions came up.  Then suddenly it was all Jim Rose and a strong "don't buy software from madmen".

How did that jerk come in?

Snapper, my experience with Distant Guns is the same as yours.  I went through all the hoops, tried all the tricks and couldn't get it to run.

This is the demo I'm referring to.  I wasn't foolish enough to buy the game.  Which is really too bad because I'm one of those guys that would have paid full price and bought the whole package, even now, if I could've gotten it to work.

Yep I can't log on with my serial and password either. I did get a reply back from technical support eventually but all that said was try booting the client with admin rights - that hasn't worked although I was able to download the install files.

Strangely, late last night after my post, I got a password reset and was able to log in (stormpowered showing 'online') and could select Jutland and Distant Guns for download. However, when I checked this morning they were still showing 0%. Part of me wants to say 'stuff it this was always going to happen' but another part of me remembers how much fun the game was to me and I'd like to have it back on my PC (lost it when I put in new drives and it didn't clone over).

Sorry to hear that all that posted are having problems downloading it. I wonder if it's a windows 10 issue? On my laptop it is a win 10 machine so only other thing I can come up with is launch Stormpowered as admin.
I would think it would prompt you to log in, if not in the toolbar there is a log in on the pull down menu.  Hope that helps.
