Privateer is already pushing it for me. Rather naval raider. But they did not mention them.

Nice thing about some of these games is that you don't HAVE TO BE a pirate. Especially the Patrician/Port Royale system. You CAN BE, if you want, but a lot of the game, especially in Patrician, is built on the assumption you're just a trader arming up to protect yourself from pirates (and from enemy combatants in the Caribbean of course.)
ICEBREAKER THESIS CHRONOLOGY! -- Victor Suvorov's Stalin Grand Strategy theory, in lots and lots of chronological order...
Dawn of Armageddon -- narrative AAR for Dawn of War: Soulstorm: Ultimate Apocalypse
Survive Harder! -- Two season narrative AAR, an Amazon Blood Bowl career.
PanzOrc Corpz Generals -- Fantasy Wars narrative AAR, half a combined campaign.
Khazâd du-bekâr! -- narrative dwarf AAR for LotR BfME2 RotWK campaign.
RobO Q Campaign Generator -- archived classic CMBB/CMAK tool!

But I want a commission and orders from the navy. Escorting a convoy would be great fun I reckon, with time compression that is.

The PR series (much like SM:Pirates) does give you the opportunity to work for the four colonial governments in the Carib, with commissions and ranks. I don't recall that you get very specific orders from the Navy, but you do get to help keep your faction's towns and cities in good shape, help prepare their defenses, even create your own settlements to grow as a governor once you level up enough.

That's already far ahead of the original SM:P. Being able to do that in 3D, walking about your ship and around the port-towns, is sort of the holy grail of SM:P successors!

Verrazano was a tricky character.
As a navigator, he was convinced that there was a passage to Asia through Pamlico Sound, North Carolina.  Then he entirely missed the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River.  (Check out a map on the size of the entrances.)
He got Francis I of France interested in the Northwest Passage, sending explorers down a dead end for a century.
Quite a few contemporaries, didn't believe that he was captured and killed by Caribe Indians but that he was the French privateer Jean Fleury.  Fleury was captured by the Spanish and hung.
So take your pick.  Eaten by cannibals or hung by the Spanish.
Just deserts for missing the Chesapeake Bay.  If he'd inflamed Francois to colonise this area, how different the story of North America might have been.
"Most gods throw dice, but Fate plays chess, and you don't find out until too late that he's been playing with two queens all along".  Terry Pratchett.

During filming of Airplane, Leslie Nielsen used a whoopee cushion to keep the cast off-balance. Hays said that Nielsen "played that thing like a maestro"

Tallulah Bankhead: "I'll come and make love to you at five o'clock. If I'm late, start without me."

"When all other trusts fail, turn to Flashman." — Abraham Lincoln.

"I have enjoyed very warm relations with my two husbands."
"With your eyes closed?"
"That helped."  Lauren Bacall

Master Chiefs are sneaky, dastardly, and snarky miscreants who thrive on the tears of Ensigns and belly dancers.   Admiral Gerry Bogan.

The website is up and has some very interesting ideas they have about the game:
The game looks like it may eventually have coop and duel modes. But the focus is very much on single player. The initial feature list blows me out of the water really.
Everything seems to be object based including navigation. You will most likely have to use sextant and such to navigate.
The interiors of the ships will be fully modelled as will the ship stresses.
They seem to be hoping to do an insane amount of weather modelling including eddy creation.
The whole thing seems amazing. Whether it will be fun is a different story all together.

Fantastic. I just hope that Game Labs does not spread themselves too thin - they have multiple ambitious games in the pipeline right now.

Can I be a Nice pirate?

Maybe even one that sparkles?

For the limited 'Founder Edition'.  If their other games are an indication final price should be around $50.

yep, understood....I was just talking about the pre order.  Don't recall their other games being that much during the pre order phase.  For once, I won't be an impulse buyer:)
