I now remember why I stopped playing.  I couldn't figure out how to do an amphibious landing.

The only reason why I stopped playing was due to the "lose three bases = automatic game over" feature this game has.  From what I've come across online there doesn't seem to be a way to mod this out so that you can play the campaign without restriction. 

Maybe the upcoming patch revision will cure this?  Need to read the changelog.....
