Title: Carrier (Solitaire, VG)
Post by: BanzaiCat on August 06, 2013, 11:44:39 AM
So I figure I'd finally take a serious look at Carrier, the solitaire boardgame from Victory Games that came out in 1990.

I picked it up for about $18 at a GenCon or Origins (can't remember which) somewhere around 2005, and never opened it. It's unpunched and in great condition.

Now that I finally have some time in my life to get back into board gaming (and am converting my home office to add a table for this purpose), I'm much more interested in some of these games that I've bought over the years but never touched. Like this one.

Now that I'm here with the time, I'm faced with the dilemma that this damned game is selling on eBay for over a hundred bucks, in two different listings.

So I can say punch it and play it and the hell with it, or box it back up and list it for sale, or box it back up and store it carefully for another ten years and see what happens then.

I hate to punch it but I really want to play it. What I'm really afraid of is playing it and thinking it sucks and then kicking myself for not selling it in the first place.

I dunno. Any of you guys play Carrier before? I can read all kinds of reviews on BGG or elsewhere, but I'd like your opinions, if you have any.

I think Gary (GJK) redid some of the graphics for it as a part of a VASSAL module...

Some things that I can guarantee you in regards to Carrier:

1. The rules themselves you probably won't find overly complex but if you want to get into the game further than the first few intro scenarios, then you will spend a good amount of time learning the (full) system.

2. IF you do opt to learn the game, you will find it to be one of your most memorable solitaire gaming experiences ever; how much so will depend on your interest in WW2 Pacific carrier Op's.

3. IF you do opt to ebay it, you will get a pretty good ROI; especially for an UP copy in near mint condition.

4. You CAN play Carrier on the computer - I did work on the VASSAL/ZunTzu modules for it and I believe that the electronic version of the rules are online.  I would just photocopy the charts before you sold your copy.  THAT SAID, the Carrier experience is best experienced with a physical copy of the game; rolling the dice, moving the counters, stepping back from the table and taking the entire picture in while trying to figure out how the hell that wave of Jap dive bombers got through your CAP.....

And I will say this - I have Carrier set up inside my "cat proof" table at this very moment waiting for me to start my next campaign.  It IS my favorite solitaire wargame.

I appreciate to see more traditional wargamers here on GrogHeads...these strange folks around here only play PC games... :P

I have to punch it because I really want to play it!

And when it comes to board wargames and especially Carrier listen to Gary :)

I appreciate it, Gary. I do love a good solitaire game and I am very interested in WWII carrier ops. I'm leaning towards keeping it and trying it out.

I also have Tokyo Express, unpunched, that I'm interested in trying. I might give that one another look as well. It's another acquisition from a game convention years ago that I never did anything with.

Yeah, that's what I meant to type. :)

I think I may just do that.

That one is also a solitaire game by Jon Southard that uses a similar but uniquely different system FWIU.  I haven't had the fortune of playing TE but the consensus that I gather is it is just a slight notch below Carrier on the excitement level and I would imagine because it simply doesn't have carrier op's in it so you miss that slice but gain the excitement of combat up and down "the slot".

The more that I think about it - what "I" would do is this.  Get the VASSAL module, and start to play the first couple of scenarios using it.  You have the rules and charts (I included the charts in the VASSAL module as well IIRC) and If it's clicking and you want to get into more and more campaigns, then punch that bad boy and get 'er on the table (that sounded kinky!).  If you find that it's not clicking, then sell it.  I have 3 copies already or I'd make you and offer!

I solved this dilemma by purchasing a punched copy AND and unpunched copy.

I recommend that you do what Gary suggests and try it out on Vassal first.  It's the only way I've played it actually, although just recently I've started looking at the rules again with the intent of setting it up for real finally.

The game holds its value very well, so I can see why you'd be reluctant to punch it.  On the other hand, we're not talking a fortune here.  Just play the game!
Title: Re: Carrier (Solitaire, VG)
Post by: weateallthepies on August 07, 2013, 02:13:15 AM
I'd probably punch it myself, but I have a thing for getting hold of games that have been "collected" and punching and playing them. Saying that, I can't afford the current prices on this one so I might even be tempted to keep hold of it as an investment, though unplayed games make me sad.  :(

Play it on Vassal, and hopefully that will convince you enough to play your copy.

Still hoping to find this cheap someday. I've had a few bargains from charity shops so you never know.

Thanks all. I know it's sacrilege but I haven't ever played on VASSAL. I know what it is, I just never cracked it open. I will change that oversight now.

Let me know if you have any questions, problems or issues getting it working or in using it.  It's not rocket science but it's not as simple as most other computer programs that installs it all for you.

Another Carrier player chiming in to recommend you get to punching those counters (following a light application of clear-coat) ASAP. It takes some persistence to make it through the rulebook, however the end results are totally worth it. The game packs a wicked AI and focuses on the interesting/fun aspects of commanding a WWII carrier group.

I also own a copy of Tokyo Express that I've yet to play. I'm sure to get around to it eventually considering the high regard I have for Carrier. I've heard scary things bout the TE rulebook though...

Both of these titles are good candidates for modding; good user mods available for download.

I grew up reading manuals for games like Third Reich - Avalon Hill gaming should at least bestow upon their players half the college coursework necessary when working on a JD or similar law degree. So yeah, not so much these days; I just don't have the patience or time for it. But Carrier is a pretty easy read - and TE is definitely looking a little more fussy. But I'll give it a shot.

Just downloaded VASSAL and the Carrier module. Man, it looks GREAT! Nice work.

Now if I only knew what the hell I was doing...guess I better finish reading the manual.

By the way, here's a screenshot of the ZunTzu gamebox that I did for carrier:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fzuntzu%2Fcarrier_screenshot.jpg&hash=bee4d879202f7661713484185ebf6e931fd32b18)

It uses a custom map and counters that I made for it.  ZunTzu works great for this game since it's solitaire only and hence no Pbem.  Get the gamebox here: http://www.garykrockover.com/zuntzu

Look spectacular, Gary!

I do hope you'll consider creating the Midway map for the game to go with the Midway variant.  That would make me very happy.   ;D

Also, while I have everyone's attention, I am looking to pick up Tokyo Express, so if you have an interest in selling/trading, let's talk.
Title: Re: Carrier (Solitaire, VG)
Post by: GJK on August 08, 2013, 05:42:28 AM
Making the Midway map would be quite easy and something that I can probably throw in to this ZunTzu gamebox over the weekend.

Also, I think that I posted links and a comment to these videos before, but there is a full set of a video AAR (I guess you would call it) on BGG:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/videos/thing/1679?gallery=all&sort=recent

Those were done by Enrico Viglino, who can be a rather excitable guy I gather.  It almost gets comical with the amount of frustration that he goes through with the game but I think that once it clicks he rather enjoys it.  Hard to tell from the "rant" in the final review.  At any rate, they might be worth watching for the entertainment value alone.

And finally - and this is how much I like this game - something that I've been working on for years now and thanks to this thread it has sparked my desire to finally finish them....an ebook for the Carrier rulebook:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fuploads%2FCarrier_Rules_Screen1.jpg&hash=ec39e8aca98bc4f402622b6fafc7e680041a14b6)

Using the .chm format, the rulebook is quick and easy to search and cross-reference:

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.garykrockover.com%2Fuploads%2FCarrier_Rules_Screen2.jpg&hash=414adffa5d55f0eb1e0dd8aa4601bcd0344f3bf0)

...and will include all known errata plus all of the charts, players aids and scenarios.  This will be great as a reference to have open on your tablet or laptop or a nearby computer while you play the table top game or to have minimized or on a 2nd monitor while playing the VASSAL or ZunTzu gamebox.

All yours for the low, introductory price of......<kidding>  :)

The ebook is about 75% done.  I will work on it here and there to update it and will throw a copy of it on my ZunTzu page at:

http://www.garykrockover.com/zuntzu

So it can be downloaded there.  Just check the file date to see if I've uploaded a newer version.

If you have problems viewing the .chm file, let me know.  Some users report that they get a "page cannot be displayed" blank page on all of the pages.  The fix is rather easy and common.

Sure Brant.  I made several modules a few years back and then hadn't messed with it at all until fairly recently so most of the newer enhancements are a bit beyond me at this point.  However, if you needed a simple but functional module for playtesting (that could later be built upon), then sure, I could give you a hand.

It's another VASSAL/CB but I think that it has the slickest way of operating and with controls that are more like a computer game (no scroll bars that you have to use, you can zoom and pan rather easily).  Plus, it's super easy to make a gamebox for.  Worth a look in my opinion!

If your interested in Pacific WW2 carrier battles, you may want to check out the free online game Fighting Flattops.
I haven't played it in a while because my gaming interest is now East Front WW2,but the game was fun and I even designed a few hypothetical what if campaigns for he game.

It's turned based against a human opponent and based roughly on the game Flattop by Avalon Hill.

True, but no rules to go along with it. That's common for a lot of Vassal modules.

That map upgrade above (very well done by the way) isn't mine and I don't think he used my redrawn map within his frame, I think his is a straight scan IIRC.  My map is the one that was used (and then modified some more) for the Ipad conversion (this screenshot is from the ZunTzu gamebox that I made (with upgraded counters as well).

If anybody wants a 300dpi print of my map, let me know and I'll upload it to my dropbox.  The map upgrade here is also made to be printed and either one will work very nicely though I think the original map is just fine as well.  By the way, there already is a VASSAL module for the game that I worked with "-E" on (who I think is Eric Lee Smith but I can't verify that) - he did the programing and I added my first rendition of the map.  It's been on my to-do list to upgrade that module with all new graphics (and larger) and ease of use functions.  Just got to find the time-

I have Carrier! and Tokyo Express. They play completely differently, but the one thing they have in common is that the programmed AI WILL crush the life out of you. Terrific solo games.

I still need to punch/play Tokyo Express. I expect it will be as challenging and enjoyable as Carrier...super interesting subject matter to boot. I've greatly reduced my game purchases over the last year, so hopefully will run out of excuses soon.

Think I mentioned this to you previously DennisS; I purchased my copy of Carrier from a member named Dennis on Wargamer several years ago. Picked it up for $40, which is a real steal these days.

Through the years, I have gotten rid of dozens, if not hundreds of boardgames. Most were wargames, and this has bothered me a lot. I could stock a gaming store with all the solo games I no longer have. I do believe that this group of grognards couldn't name ten solo wargames I haven't owned, out of all the solo wargames ever produced. Sad, really.

That doesn't sound so bad to me Dennis. It's probably better to get those unplayed games back in circulation, while freeing up cash for future purchases. I know a fellow who claims to have 2000+ wargames in his collection. Personally, that would bother me a lot more.

I've done reasonable well at limiting my purchases over the years (~30 wargames, never sold any). I still have a bitch of a time getting back to the really good ones due to the one or two new shiny games in my collection that scream for attention. Really have a hankering for a good long campaign of Steel Wolves at the moment, but sooo hard to make that 300+ hour commitment of table and personal time.

True. The ones in the pix above look home-brewed as well. If not, the die-cutting run must have been done on a monday morning or a friday afternoon.

Those pictured above are home-brewed (available on BGG still I believe).  Interesting timing on renewing this thread as I was just thinking of this game earlier today.  My personal to-do list for it: 1) update/completely overhaul the VASSAL module 2) finish adding and proofing all the charts for my online GAP program 3) finish building out a complete players copy of the game.  I have 3 copies of this game (one is unpunched and will remain so for the time being).  The other two are players copies so I want to find the best counter from the set and make a nice players copy.  I will then likely donate the 3rd copy to somebody that I know will play it.  This is definitely a game that you want to acquire given the opportunity.

Finally took the shrink wrap off this(the seller actually shrink wrapped and packed it nicely!). I was very, very happy with the contents. The seller said this came from an estate sale. According to what is listed on Board Game Geek I have everything except the counter tray (did this really ship with a counter tray?). All of the counters were there. Even the registration card and an Avalon Hill order form. The counters seemed as if they were just punched, still very dusty! This game was either never played or only used once or twice. There was even a nice photocopied review from Fire & Movement #73 in the box. Whoever owned this, thank you for taking such good care. (https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aarcentral.com%2Fpics%2Fworship.gif&hash=5710f5bfb020c671b0d5b3957c76f589f2922b06)
Also, while I was sorting out the airplane counters, I was confused to find F-14s, A-7s, and A-6s. I thought, "What is this? The Final Countdown?". I pulled out the rules and looked. Scenario 32.0 The Final Countdown. Damn! (https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aarcentral.com%2Fpics%2Fdrool.gif&hash=da004c4cc65640f93e2871c1a40d338abc13330b)

Now I need to find a proper counter try.

p.s. Some of you are probably wondering so...I paid $110 for it.  :buck2:

Carrier did ship with a tray.  AH used the "clamshell" all clear trays back in the day.

One Plano 3701 will work just fine for this one and you'll never have to worry about a flimsy counter tray lid coming off and pieces going everywhere.

I still need to finish putting together the extra copy and verifying it but once I do, this place will be the first that I go to look for any interested buyers.

I enlarged the hexes when I redrew this one to fit a 5/8" counter so it's a large map (44"x30").

The missus and I finished building our retirement home about a year ago. Specifically, I have my gaming room with a PERMANENT gaming table built into the office. The official rule is LEAVE MY GAME ALONE, even if it sits there for weeks. I have enough space, on three sides, for any game you can imagine. Main table is four feet deep, and I have to stand up and reach to get to it. More for rules, boxes, and extra stuff than actual board. Still, this works. Gotta have me that extra space.

Played some LnL: Day of Heroes, some Tanks, and some Elusive Victory as a send off for my friend.

Started a campaign of Descent using the app with some friends and had a blast.

I may fire up this game..give it another shot. Problem is that many of the rules lack clarity, or even downright contradict each other. What we need is thorough video play through. The only one online is quite poorly done.

I agree, we do need some videos on this one.  I'd *love* to see Stuka Joe cover this one.

I found a copy of Carrier, punched, but from a non-smoking home and in good condition. The seller asks 95 euro's, what do you think?

In the mean time I have found the rulebook in PDF form and browsed this thread to find GJK's Vassal module! I am going to run the game in the coming days, but it sure seems like its something I would enjoy.

That seems pretty reasonable.  It's a neat game.  If you want it, I'd pony up the cash and get it!

I'm selling PDF's of my kit for $35.  I've heard from Jon Southard and I have his "blessing" on it.  The kit includes everything needed for the game, my redrawn map (enlarged hexes, new design), all the counters plus extras (5/8", new look), charts (redrawn and organized as a booklet), and rules (including errata and color counter samples which clears up the common confusion of what the different colored chits are for).  I've found that www.posterninja.com has very reasonable printing options for the map and there's a number of tutorials for mounting your own counters (and I'd be happy to share my "technique" as well).

Ping me here or more promptly via email gary at garykrockover dot com.

Wow that's awesome Gary!
Let me check for a reasonably priced poster printer here in Holland to see if I can get things done here.
I'll definately get back to you when I find good options.

Yes, on my "to do" list! The existing module is screaming for an update and I'd love to use these graphics for it.  Not to toot my own horn (careful!) but the printed graphics look sweeeet and I think that it would work great for the VASSAL module as well.

Just noticed this thread because I'm currently on the lookout for another VG title, Vietnam 1965-1975.  It sounds like I need to go to Gen-con.

and just some general advice, or at the very least my humble opinion.  Unless you're on the verge of death due to starvation don't sell your unboxed unpunched game for 100 bucks.  It's not worth it.  Now if someone is willing to give you a grand or more for it then you might consider it.

Did someone sell an unpunched copy of Vietnam 1965-75 for $100 recently?

I've been thinking for the last couple of months that I need to reacquire this game (owned it twice before!). It's so good. I'd be satisfied with a punched copy though. All I really need is the rule book in decent shape. I'd play it on Vassal.

Last time I looked, prices were reasonable on EBay.

I recently saw some copies being sold on eBay for under 150.  Both copies I saw for sale were unpunched and one was even still in shrinkwrap.  I just can't bring myself to buy anything off of eBay because of all the horror stories I've heard.

I actually did sell it.  To be honest, with the upgrade kit that I made (and have printed and played on), I couldn't ever go back to playing on the original components and with PDF's of all of my materials, I'm always just a reprint away from having another copy of the game.

I have purchased one, single thing off of E-Bay in my life, a copy of Tokyo Express. After 30 full days, I still didn't have the game, and it was the very last day to give input. This is after MANY emails to the seller. So..I left a bad review. I got SMOKED with a bad review by the seller. He had a 91% rating for 2000+  sells, I had a ZERO percent rating after one purchase. I received the game two weeks later. SMH...
