Title: The weapons of your service
Post by: Keunert on April 13, 2012, 01:51:00 PM
This will easily be the greatest thread in the world wide web. Post a pic, a personal one if you have, on all weapons you were trained during your military service.
and feel free to give some background info or tell about some of your experience with it.

10.5 cm Haubitze 1946, 15 kg bullets, 11.2 km range. i did service on this one in it's last year in service. the basic design was made in 1942.
i have seen pictures of more modern guns used in Bosnia. made me think about the uselesness of my service. the fire of several batteries and the sound it made
gave me the shudders: ground shaking and a 'sssssssss' in the air... had some movie feel about it.

Sturmgewehr 90, a very modern and precise and light gun. was fun shooting it. quite a difference compared to my AK 47. compensated for the museum artillery piece.

Raketenrohr 80: we did shoot with them only about three times. was funny to see how the rocket flew strange curves. the instructor told us never to use it against real Panzers. it would be useless against any post 60's tank. i did my first shot with an open mouth... the rocket made sure i ate a lot of dirt. if you did not hold the tube firm it would jump up and the visor would give you a bloody and lasting mark between your eyes.

The 7.62 FNC1 A1.

Same here in my very brief stint. Great rifle but frakking heavy.

My DS (directing staff) told us one thing about the rifle that has stuck with me all these years...
"The M16 is designed to pin a man down behind a tree at 200 yds. The FN is designed to cut through the tree at 1000 yds."

Carl Gustav

Lots of fun to shoot.  Was surprised the 1st time when the rocket leaves the tube I was actually blown a bit forward by the back blast, then sucked forward as the rocket flew down-range.  I shot the tank.  Then I did it again with the M72 (a weaker weapon than the Carl Gustav):

Not a weapon, but it is very useful for cleaning up the mess left after using some of the above. Hopefully Keunert will allow it.

Also great for going through intersections crowded with traffic at 100 mph. One of my best memories.

Here's the main ones I trained on:
IW Steyr:

M79 GL:

M72:

I was section grenadier so got to carry both steyr and M79. Pepper-potting (fire and movement drills) was a PITA as the damn '79 always bounced on my back , no matter how tight I made the sling..

You will have noted that his user name is Jarhead0331.  In the USMC, 0331 is an occupation code.  According to Wiki:

Quote
The U.S. Marine Corps begins by separating all jobs into "occupational fields" (OccFld), in which no distinction is made between officers and enlisted Marines. The fields are numbered from 01 to 99 and include general categories (Intelligence, Infantry, Logistics, Public Affairs, Ordnance, etc.) that specific jobs fall under.

Each field contains multiple MOS's, each designated by a four-digit numerical indicator and a job title. For example, the infantry field (03) has ten enlisted classifications: Rifleman (MOS 0311), Riverine Assault Craft (MOS 0312), Light Armored Vehicle Crewman (MOS 0313), Scout Sniper (MOS 0317), Reconnaissance Man (MOS 0321), Machine Gunner (MOS 0331), Mortarman (MOS 0341), Assaultman (MOS 0351), Antitank Assault Guided Missileman (MOS 0352), and Infantry Unit Leader (MOS 0369).

Which would indicate that our Jarhead was a Machine Gunner.  No surprise, eh?

LOL...you guys are so silly.  :P

@Keunert, the SAW and the 240Golf are carried in the field and used mounted on vehicles...the Ma Deuce was always mounted.  It weighs about 80lbs if I recall.

That little guy posted by Centurion is actually a 1919a4, light machine gun. Its a .30cal.  I actually own one and have it for sale.  It can be yours with the USGI tripod and T&E device for a steal.  I'll even throw in an ammo linker!  PM me if interested!  ;)

First one is with my M-16A1/M-203 on Rota, waiting for the C-130 to take us to Tinian.
Second one is the Newly issued M-16A2 in 1984
Third one is with the M-40A1 in Okinawa

First picture is with the M-16A2 in 95......after WAWA
Second picture is the 81's Fire Direction Center (FDC) at Chocolate Mountains is CA....I lost a keg of beer there...
Third picture is SA-80 at a MOUT facility just outside of London

I'm going to have to do some more scanning of pictures. Jarhead covered the M-249, M-240G, & M-2. I'll look for some pictures of the M-60, SW Model 19, Remington 870, MK-19, M-9.....

Note, when they issued the M-2 in 83, many of our 0331s volunteered to man the new old weapon because they came with the M-151 Jeeps. After deploying with LtCol Fox.....they were tired of walking....or next trip was to Bridgeport for mountain warfare training.....they didn't have the jeeps...they had to hump the guns....us 11s laughed..

Not me (photo from canadiansoldiers.com), but from the same era (early 1980s). And when I had to carry ammunition loose like that (and normally we didn't), I made sure to turn the rounds so that the bullet noses didn't dig into my neck!

This was the C5 General Purpose Machine Gun, the Canadian version of the M1919A4 .30 calibre Browning, rechambered for NATO 7.62 ammunition and with a large cocking handle added. My favourite weapon and the Machine Gunner's course was my favourite time in service.

The C3 81mm mortar was even heavier at 36.3 kg (that is 92 lb for those of you who are not metric minded). Fortunately the mortar team usually had transport but the weapon was backpack portable!

40Cent, Did you ever had to hump one of these tubes during your stint in the infantry?

90 lbs is a load even with a good backpack with a properly adjusted waist belt

IIRC the weapon breaks down into the tube and stand so say 40+ pounds per squad member, which is still a load since it doesn't include personal weapon, etc. Someone also has to carry the ammo.

The weight of a complete C5 GPMG was 52 pounds: 31 lbs for the gun, 11 for the tripod, 3 1/2 for the T+E mech, 7 lbs for the barrel.

Normally the No. 1 would carry the gun, barrel and T+E together for almost 42 lbs; the No. 2 would carry even more with the tripod, a spare barrel, tool wallet and two boxes of ammunition (16 lbs for 220 rounds) for 52 lbs. Plus personal weapons (9mm submachine gun or pistol for the No. 1, FN C1 rifle for the No. 2) and all the usual webbing, rucksack and other gear. Two boxes of ammunition would not last long so sometimes there was a No. 3 who carried more.

Sucked to be #2 on the MG team! 52 lbs plus FN C1@ 11 lbs (included bayonet and full mag).

Why yes, yes it did suck.
I always contrived to be No. 1; the gun was heavy but it was the only thing to carry (though usually I ended up carrying a box of ammo too, so we'd have at least three belts which was usually enough for a quick platoon attack on an isolated objective - the "tactical problem" we went through over and over again at the Infantry School).

I avoided it like the plague.  The C2 was bad enough!!

The weapon I've used the most is the CAR-15 (or some derivative of it). You could add to the list the M16, Galil (AR, SAR, Micro), AK47, UZI (SMG, Pistol),  MAG (M249), 52mm mortar and various handguns.

given that you can't see through the door at the layout and their possible field of fire coverage(camera looking back) I assume there is something else wrong (given that hi-low seems covered)

soooo?

Just noticed this thread.
Nothing special really (was not a combat role).
Just M16/A1 and Uzi SMG.

The Bushmaster,

was involved in the testing of this weapon at the arctic test center during the late '70's. it was planned to replace the 45cal for heavy weapons crewmen etc. the army turned it down, but i think the air force did finally pick it up.

A little. Feels a bit strange at first, and I had trouble when inhaling the gunpowder fumes, since the ejection is right beneath one's nose.

Don't shoot from the prone position then.  Or are you trying to make a tripod?
