Title: Civ VI: Rise and Fall expansion
Post by: RedArgo on November 28, 2017, 10:38:07 AM
New expansion due out in February.

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/11/28/civilization-6-rise-and-fall-expansion-details/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RockPaperShotgun+%28Rock%2C+Paper%2C+Shotgun%29 (https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2017/11/28/civilization-6-rise-and-fall-expansion-details/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+RockPaperShotgun+%28Rock%2C+Paper%2C+Shotgun%29)

Looks interesting, but I just haven't been able to get into Civ VI for some reason.  Played a ton of all the rest.  Maybe this will change that.

I haven't played a lot of Civilization VI yet and i have to say that the map gets crowed way too soon with the new System. Oriental Empires is a lot more what i want from a Civilization type of game. Also the bad grachics of the Units is a turn-off (especially compared to Civilization 5 and Oriental Empires). I have started my first campaign of Civilization VI so i'll see where this is leading me.

However i think i will get this Expansion, looks nice and it should improve the base game.

I've always been a Civ fanboy but I too have trouble getting into VI.   I chalk it up to too much going on but then somehow find the time to play other things so I just think it's Civs fault.  :)

I'm a Civ fan but I've been hesitant over VI.  I liked some things about V, but the fact that V was so limiting on the number of cities you can build really killed it for me.  I know VI has the districts, so maybe that feeling of only a small handful of cities is somewhat alleviated?

I've also hear the ai is pretty bad?

Civ III and IV are my current favorites of the series.

I like Civ Vi a lot.

Thought the graphics would be a turn off... they are not. The look way better in game than in static pics.

This addition should add some good game play. Looking forward to it.

The AI does still need some work but as I'm not a power player I have lots of fun with it.

Are there any campaigns available for Civ VI? I tend to like more specific historical campaigns like the Scramble for Africa, Japanese invasion of Korea and the Smokey Skies (steampunk) one.

I was a bit put off by the graphics at first....seemed kind of Pixar/Disneyish to me. Probably still not my preference but they've grown on me and I find the game enjoyable.

Mongolia seems like an odd choice.  They didn't so much create their own civilization as sack & loot others.  The very notion of them sending out settlers to found cities is a bit bizarre.

Oh yeah, lots of mods. There's at least one that if you don't have a video card with at least 6 GB it will not run. The best one I play is the Yet (not) Another Maps Pack mod. It has so many options to it. Maps are frickin huge. You can play on Earth or Earth like setups.

Anyone interested in starting a Grogheads multiplayer matchup for Civ 6?
There's always mucho complaining about the state of AI, but if we take the fight to eachother instead we can only lament the state of our own mind, while enjoying everything else the game has to offer. O0

We can use the Play Your Damn Turn! service to automate hotseat savegame distribution, effectively making it a Play by Email game where everyone can play their turn in their own leisurely time.
Alternatively I can provide savegame distribution manually in case the service has a fit (wasn't able to load the page today).

Might be prudent to wait until the expansion is released before we kick off.

What say ye? Yay or nay?

Can you really do a PBEM mail with Civ? Doesn't the beginning have simultaneous moves (or at least the other Civ's did)?
Title: Re: Civ VI: Rise and Fall expansion
Post by: Yskonyn on January 30, 2018, 07:11:33 AM
There is a little trick they use by using the Hotseat game mode and sending the savegame around to each player in turn. The PlayYourDamnTurn is a handy automation service with a taskbar client to monitor when your turn has arrived.
I personally havent used it yet, but I read it works flawlessly and effectively enables PBEm play for Civ 6.
I believe in hotseat mode each player gives orders and then simultaneous execution turn is played.

Fig VI's map did seem to get cluttered to  quickly in the few games I played. Due to all the city enhancements. Maybe they should enforce more space between cities.

Reviews for VI, from press and regular fellers, are not as praising as they were for a Civ V. Gamers seem to be liking it enough, but really seemed more impressed with V. Maybe the jump from IV to V was more dramatic than V to VI.

Reviews for VI, from press and regular fellers, are not as praising as they were for a Civ V. Gamers seem to be liking it enough, but really seemed more impressed with V. Maybe the jump from IV to V was more dramatic than V to VI.
It'll change with this expansion, the gameplay has changed for the better IMO.

Governors
Golden/Dark Ages
Better Barbarians
Better Nation behaviour

combine them all plus a better AI and that means less cookie cutter strategy as you advance
multiple types of alliances

something called a global emergency that makes it possible to be ganged up on so domination victories are more difficult  (or more fun, gang up on some one else).
more and different resources/districts/buildings

Pretty rote. It was like a generic version of Civ, but with districts.
The new thing with the expansion is that the new game play/style compels you to interact with the other nations. There are now many more carrots and sticks so you want to deal with them. Its ads dimensionality to the Civ6 game. Also the changing eras put pressure on you to avoid being put into a dark age.

It does, but I'm still leery of subscribing to Humble Bundle. They've offered some good deals in it, but I've also seen some stuff I'm just not interested in.

Yeah it's tough. I'll get a month I have no interest and be like ok, if I get 2 in a row I'm done. Then they throw something good out there. Next month is Dark Souls 3 so I'll stay in for that.

I've come to the conclusion I'm a game hoarder. I'll buy games I realistically will probably never play because "I need them". That said it's pretty much my only vice, so I guess so be it.

I have not hit the board game hoarding mindset yet. Typically all the games I buy we play, that said no hardcore war games as it's not exactly my kids cup o tea. Ticket to ride and carcassone (SIC) are the heaviest we go so far.

That said, if I found a local board gaming / rpg group that would change and quickly. I do have issues with books although I've gotten better with using the local library system to read books I don't necessarily want to buy.

Get rid of any mods (unsub), then verify integrity of game files in steam and you're golden.

Also make sure you're not trying to load any saved advanced game configs from before Rise and Fall.  If you saved a config pre-expansion it tries to re-enable the mods that you had active then.  That was giving me fits till I figured it out.

I'm getting a similar issue. I played Civ VI for a huge amount of turns and don't recall any issues.

Since installing RaF and restarting a fresh game, I've played twice and had 2 BSoD. Both seemed to have happened within a similar amount of time. I'll have to monitor the turns next time and the time after to see if there's anything going on with turns

I'll also verify game files to see how that goes.

I played R&F all weekend with any trouble at all.

I'm really enjoying the additions to the game. Lots more to think about and plan ahead for laying out your cities, not just where to put them but where to put their districts and how they will interact with each other.
For instance, playing as Korea your science districts now give you a flat +4 science instead of adjacency bonuses. Which is nice because you don't have to worry about that any more, but it needs to be on a hill. But if you put any other district next to the science one you lose 1 of that +4... even next to the city center so it needs to be placed fairly remotely. And if you put mines or farms next to the science place you get bonus food and production.

Diplomacy is more filled out too. Alliances are now good things and you want to keep them for a long time. You also don't want others to make them with your neighbors.

Good stuff so far.

Yeah man ! The game requires you to have a strategy now, where before you could go with the flow more.
You also have to keep an eye on what other nations are up to.
Very fun new mechanics have been added; governors are cool, new diplo system is better and the constant ebb and flow of the Golden or Dark Age timer is a fun thing.
I do feel that Civ 6 has moved more towards being an electronic boardgame instead of the strategy game it was with IV. Perhaps this is why some people don't like it?
I am very happy with the game, though!

You control them by doing noteworthy things. Be the first to circumnavigate the world get Era points, build a wonder get Era points etc.

You need to build up a certain number of points to make sure you don't sink into a Dark era. Build up lots of points and  you can get a Golden era. If you are in a Dark age and build up enough points to go into a Golden era you get an Heroic era instead (twice as good as a Golden era).

Each type of era gives you a selection of buffs to chose from, Heroic gets 2, that last for the entire era. So you have to think about what you want to accomplish in the new era but still with an eye to what you'll need to stay out of a Dark Era next time around.

With each era, and type of era, the points needed for the next increase. So it's difficult to have 2 Golden eras is a row, and very hard, but not impossible as I've done it, to have 3 in a row. But the number of era points you need for the next era are increased by the number of cities you have and how well you did in the last era. So even though I managed 3 Goldens in a row my next era was Dark because I just could not keep up the pace of advancement.

It's a fun feature to manage.

It's a blast to play around with. Trying to pile up the points as the years tick by but not get too many or the next era will be tougher.

Lots of good stuff in this expansion.

Governors:
Pingala's Librarian ability now provides +15% Science and Culture in the city (was +20%).
Governor Magnus Groundbreaker ability reduced from +100% to +50%.
Government Balance Pass – Rise & Fall
Communism: Bonus Production per population from .4 to .6. Overall Production bonus from 10% to 15%.

Government Balance Pass – Base Game
Fascism: Combat Strength from 4 to 5.
Policy Rebalance:
Military Research gives +2 Science from Military Academies, Seaports, and Renaissance Walls (was +1 and did not include Renaissance Walls).

Ecommerce gives +2 Production and +5 Gold for all your Trade Routes (was +5 and +10 but only for international Trade Routes).
Civ Balance:
Victoria's Pax Britannica ability now additionally awards a free melee class unit when constructing a Royal Navy Dockyard in a city founded on a foreign continent.
Lautaro's unique ability Swift Hawk has been updated to have an additional effect: Pillaging an enemy city plot now causes that city to lose 5 loyalty
Rebalancing Seondeok's Hwarang ability. Governors established in a city provide +3% Culture and Science for each Promotion they have earned, including their first (was +10% Culture and Science for any Governor regardless of Promotions).

Rebalancing Era Score of historic moments related to late game city projects:
Manhattan Project and Operation Ivy now worth 2 (was 1)

Religion can now affect the Loyalty of a city. For players who founded a religion, cities get +3 Loyalty for following that religion, but -3 Loyalty per turn if following another player's religion.
Updated Foreign Ministry (Government building): Unit combat bonus now applies to City-State units even when they are not levied.
Number of envoys received from Liberating City-States is boosted as you progress through the game.
Commandos' Melee unit promotion now grants +1 movement
MODDABILITY UPDATES
Governors and Governor Promotions now use 'Promotion Sets' which allows more than one governor type to be associated with a promotion and vice versa
BUG FIXES
Only show the "Capital Lost" when a player loses their original capital city (was also showing when a player lost their new capital city that also happened to be the original capital city of a different player).
Fixed for Priority Target highlighting invalid hexes.
Districts that cannot be repaired because the player is missing their pre-requisite Tech or Civic (ex. in a conquered city) will now say this in the city production UI.
For Great People that activate over luxury resources, a tile with a district belonging to another player is no longer treated as a valid activation tile (and it will not end up highlighted)
Frederick Barbarossa's UA no longer gives a combat bonus against Free Cities.
Liberating a city will now make that city immune against your Loyalty pressure, as was the design intent.
Correctly display when a Wonder needs an adjacent district. Clarified that the adjacent district requirement also must be a district owned by this city.
Fixed the combined arms boost by changing it to be "Have 3 Armies or Armadas."
Fixed Victoria's Pax Britannica ability in the base game.
Enforced that cities cannot be founded on tiles with districts. It was possible before with the relaxed minimum city distance present in island situations.
Fixed an edge case where the historic moments for creating a Trading Post in another civ could be repeated and exploited
Made it so Abu al-Qasim al-Zahrawi only heals land units.
Fixed Bugs related to expelling units out of a City's or Civilization's borders when applicable. Units should no longer be expelled from a Free City when it flips due to Loyalty unless the city flips to a major civ and rules require it.
Fixed an issue with not counting armadas and Fleets for the Triple Seven achievement.
Ensure proper display of National Parks after a save is loaded.
Don't show Paradrop unit action if unit cannot move.

Corrected the bonus text for the Zoning Commissioner Governor promotion (it said 30% but it is actually 20 %.)
Updated Rise and Fall Agenda descriptions to include what that leader dislikes.
Clarified Kilwa's description to show that it increases the type bonus from city states instead of the yield.
Removed a redundant font icon in the name of a city-state quest.
Updated Civilopedia text for Anarchy, since Anarchy does not affect Era Score.
Clarified text for Georgia's Unique Ability.
Clarified text for first sea/air unit Historic Moments.
Added information to technology descriptions about what resources are unlocked for harvesting (some were missing).
Document that Patron Saint Governor Promotion also helps Warrior Monks.
Removed "doubling" and "tripling" in description of effects for tourism. Use +100% or +200% instead.
Added Housing info to Polder description
Fixed the Fascism combat bonus description being incorrect in base game.
Updated wording for Religious Alliance to indicate that it refers to cities dominated by the player's religion.
Changed some text that was incorrectly referring to "Identity" instead of "Loyalty."

Fixed government bonus analysis problem. AI will no longer focus entirely on monarchy.
Fixed issues regarding embarking units near enemy warships, evaluation now takes proper account of that.
AI can modify a deal with just gold when asked what would you give.
Germany (or anyone favoring minor civ war) won't care about their relationship to a minor civ suzerain unless it's them.
Give Greece and Pericles some preferences for culture and envoys.
Fix round off problem that was giving low threat values in duel maps (or with only 2 Civs left).
Free cities units that are not involved in attacking other units will stay within their own territory.
Improved city defense unit management.

Players should not be able to unready their turns after their turn timer elapses.
Dead civilizations are no longer selectable after loading a save in multiplayer.
Multiplayer quick saves now go in the proper save folder for the current game mode.
Fixed default multiplayer handicap for third player in the Jadwiga's Legacy scenario.
UI
Changes to the way Governor Title notifications are handled.
The Governor Title notifications turn blocking no longer requires players to use the Governor Title to be dismissed.
Appoint Governor Notification will not appear if the player does not yet have a city to assign one.
Updated the window style of the Dedication screen and Era Rollover screen, emphasizing Era / Age types.
Added food needed for population growth in City Details Panel.
Made sure we only show the Emergency row and tab if there are emergencies involving both the selected player and the local player.
