Title: Announcing Northern Fury: H-Hour - a novel of WWIII
Post by: Airborne Rifles on May 04, 2018, 11:54:12 AM
Hey all, Brant just broke the news from the podcast (http://grogheads.com/podcast/grogcast-season-6-episode-11-joel-bart-and-the-cmano-novel (http://grogheads.com/podcast/grogcast-season-6-episode-11-joel-bart-and-the-cmano-novel)) but Bart Gavin (Gunner98) and myself are excited to announce that we've partnered to produce a series of novels based on Bart's Northern Fury scenarios for Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations. Read below for the details!

Bart Gauvin and Joel Radunzel are excited to announce that we've partnered to write a series of alternate history "Cold War goes-hot" novels. The first novel in the series, Northern Fury: H-Hour, will be available in winter of 2018. Read on for the details!

Welcome to the Northern Fury world. This is a story of what might have happened if the Cold War had continued another five short years; the Warsaw Pact is disintegrating, NATO is fragile, a hardline resurgence in the Soviet Union is feeling strangled by western sanctions and threatened by the continuation of NATO as an alliance. What could possibly go wrong?

Bart Gauvin and Joel Radunzel have combined forces to translate a fascinating historical "what if" into a story that is gripping, believable, and compelling. We created Northern Fury: H-Hour, the first in our series of World War III novels, through a unique process. Using Command Modern Air/Naval Operations (CMANO, or simply Command), an excellent game/simulation developed by Warfare Sims and published by Matrix Games, we crafted a series of scenarios that encompass the key engagements of our hypothetical conflict. Then, by playing those scenarios and imagining the events through the eyes of the people who would have fought these battles, we were able to discover and write a story of conflict, heroism, sacrifice, and leadership that we are excited to pass on to you.

In addition to the human drama, our alternate history showcases the evolution of military technology and doctrine that was emerging at the end of the Cold War. The Soviet Union was on the brink of crucial improvements in air defense and surface-to-surface missile technology, its ships were as or more capable than many western counterparts and its aircraft were reaching a level of parity with those fielded by the US. On the other side of the coin, the Seawolf-class submarine was a major improvement in undersea technologies. The new weapons like the AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missile represented an impressive enhancement in air combat capability.

But the early '90s were also a transitional era. Countries retained older equipment as they struggled with the exponential growth in cost of new technologies. Nations who were banking on the "peace dividend" found themselves either short on modern military hardware or had to mortgage huge sums of capital to maintain an edge. The war that was about to come would see the ultra-modern pitted against the obsolete. For both sides, the balance would go to the nation who made the right choices in development, deployment and employment.

The first book in the series, Northern Fury: H-Hour, will be available by winter 2018. In the meantime feel free to peruse our website (http://northernfury.bhgdesigns.com/index.php) and our blog (http://northernfury.bhgdesigns.com/blog/), play the scenarios and join the discussion!

Game on!

We're announcing a short delay in to the publication date for Northern Fury: H-Hour, as we work through the ins and outs of publishing a book for the first time. We were shooting for Christmas but it's looking to after the New Year now. In the meantime, we're excited to announce a licencing agreement between ourselves and Slitherine Software. They've wroked up a pretty sweet cover for us. Here it is:

Hey guys,

We finally have a release date for Northern Fury: H-Hour: 6 May!

This is a bit later than we'd intended, but the the publishing process has been slowed down a bit by the fact that I've been unexpectedly deployed to Europe in support of NATO . A bit ironic I know, given the subject matter of of the novel (also why I've been pretty quiet online lately).

Here's our blog with the back cover blurb of the novel along with our (very short) author bios: http://northernfury.bhgdesigns.com/blog/index.php?controller=post&action=view&id_post=18 (http://northernfury.bhgdesigns.com/blog/index.php?controller=post&action=view&id_post=18)

Check out the first review of Northern Fury: H-Hour at the Fuldapocalypse blog: https://fuldapocalypsefiction.wordpress.com/2019/03/25/review-northern-fury-h-hour/ (https://fuldapocalypsefiction.wordpress.com/2019/03/25/review-northern-fury-h-hour/)

QuoteNorthern Fury: H-Hour is both an excellent example of how a simulation can be used in the creation of a novel (like the original Harpoon tabletop version was for Red Storm Rising) and a very good throwback to the technothriller/WWIII fiction of days past.

And Northern Fury: H-Hour is available on Amazon, both ebook and paperback versions! Thanks for the support guys, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it. The enthusiasm of the people around here for the AARs I first started writing way back when are what launched this project in the first place.

I got a kindle version a few nights ago and have been reading it. Up to chapter 14 right now. So far I'm really liking it. The characterizations are all good in my opinion, the story thus far makes sense to me, and the writing in general is more than adequate for my tastes.

If I had to give a criticism, its that we'll have to wait to get the 2nd and 3rd books to see how this whole thing comes to an end.

Huge fan of your CMANO AARs here Airborne Rifles. I'm really excited for the war to kick off. For me, all I need to be happy with the books are those excellent AARs with a bit more story around them, and so far that seems like exactly what the book is.

Congrats on the release!

Mediterranean Fury 5, Serbia-right!

16 Feb 1994, 1300 Zulu, 1400 Local

Three days into World War Three and you as Commander 5th Allied Tactical Air Force (ATAF) are now focusing your efforts on the Adriatic and Balkan situation. Commander 6th Fleet as Commander NATO Strike Force Southern Europe (STRIKFORSOUTH) has been given the task of cleansing the Mediterranean Sea of Soviet threats and neutralizing Libya and Syria. Commander Allied Land Forces South-Eastern Europe (LANDSOUTHEAST) is working the situation in the Bosporus and Aegean Sea. All three of these commands have been allocated land, sea and air forces and have effectively become regional Joint Commands, at least until the situation stabilizes.

The situation in the Balkans is complex; Slovenia is working hard at becoming a NATO member but has no military force to speak off, Croatia and Bosnia are being stabilized by UNPROFOR (United Nations Protection Force), Serbia is being actively recruited by the Soviets but the provinces of Macedonia and Kosovo are on the verge of open revolt despite Belgrade's oppression, and Albania is striving to be neutral but is riddled with organized crime. UNPROFOR is a large force but dispersed across the two countries and set up for stabilization, not warfighting, also several of the 40-odd countries making up its force of over 30,000 troops want no part in this war – and many others want their troops back. NATO's Operation Deny Flight and Sharp Guard, the air and sea blockade of the Balkans, are still in place but their responsibilities and resources have fallen under your control.

For the past 72 hours your Area of Operation (AO) has been quiet – disturbingly quiet! The WP has not violated UNPROFOR airspace while the tempest of war goes on to the north, south and east, apparently content to hold down NATO forces while conserving their own. NATO on the other hand, not anxious to engage on another front at a disadvantage has been content to hold back and wait, it's pulled back its Operation DENY FLIGHT forces to hold over the Adriatic in a desire not to provoke a reaction, while naval forces maintain anti-smuggling patrols. A phony war akin to the winter of 1939/1940 in France has developed. Although this may sound like a good thing – you've watched as forces flowed through and around your command without any real reinforcement being assigned to you – from your perspective that is not good. There are some indications that the Soviets don't trust their fraternal brothers in Romania and Hungary to do any heavy lifting.

That situation however is about to change. Just over 20 hours ago the small container ship MV Hansa Carrier enroute to Split experienced an explosion reported as a possible mine incident in Splitska Vrata Channel. She was carrying sundry goods for Croatian consumption but also many containers specifically to supply UNPROFOR forces. SHAPE (Supreme HQ Allied Powers Europe) has directed Naples (AFSOUTH – Allied Forces Southern Europe) to conduct strikes into Hungary primarily to distract WP efforts in Germany; but also to exert pressure to deter WP operations supporting Syria and the Bosporus area, and finally to cover SNMCMG2's (Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 2) operation to rescue the Hansa Carrier.

You're going to have a busy evening!

We're excited to announce a Noerthern Fury novella, The Nordkapp Affair!

This is a side story about the Norwegian Coast Guard cutter Nordkapp - you may remember her from Northern Fury scenario #1: H-Hour, and if you've played NF #33: Into the Night, you would have met her again.

During our main story line she received a couple of mentions in H-Hour and will show up again in the later books, but only briefly.

We hope to have several of these Novellas to fill in gaps and side stories over the next few years.

Check out the cover:
