Title: Slitherine's anticipated choice of games for 2018 and 2019
Post by: Boggit on December 08, 2018, 01:19:27 AM
I got the press link below from Slitherine, and thought you all might find it of interest.

I have played some Armoured Brigade, and so far have found it enjoyable pausable real time experience, and is IMHO strongly influenced by the classic game Steel Panthers, although the mechanics are quite different. I have not played any of the other games so I can't really comment on them.

As a Field of Glory and AGEOD fanboy, I am really intrigued by the upcoming Field of Glory Empires due in 2019.

I'm also interested in Close Combat: The Bloody First. I remember this was being developed back in 2014 when I was at Home of Wargamers Conference, so after some 5 years of development I'm expecting something special here.

Anyway, onto the press link...

Three great games from Slitherine and Matrix Games published in 2018

Warhammer 40.000: Gladius – Relics of War

The first ever 4X strategy game set in Games Workshop's WH40K universe, Gladius features an entire planet to be colonized. Players choose their faction amongst the iconic Space Marines, the massed file and rank units of the Astra Militarum, the "go fasta red" Orks with their awkward but deadly war machines, or the silent and terrifying Necrons. On Gladius Prime the planet itself can turn into the worst of enemies. The game also comes in a Deluxe edition with extra units and a wealth of goodies. A first DLC that adds a new unit for each faction has also been released.

Empires Apart

Inspired by classic multiplayer RTSs like Age of Empires 2, Empires Apart focuses on fast skirmishes and lightning-quick create-and-play online matches. Players can download the full game for free with the ready-to-use Byzantine faction and with DLCs offering entire new factions thatdramatically change both combat and building style. The determined Chinese civilization with its powerful shooting units, or the all-mounted Mongol army with the ability to literally "move" their cities. The Arabs can "convert" enemy units to their cause, while the French have an unstoppable mounted charge with their fierce plate armoured knights. All factions are truly unique!

Armored Brigade

What if the USSR would had unleashed its armored division in the 80s and invaded West Germany to free the people from the yoke of Capitalism? Armored Brigade is a Tactical RTS where every single shot, every armored tank, every infantry platoon is simulated to the most in-depth detail. Players can choose the set on three enormous maps – the Finnish border with the USSR, central Germany and the famed Fulda Gap, the weak flat spot that NATO protected to prevent the main Warsaw Pact invasion. On these maps players pick a sector to fight random battles: UK, USA or West Germany for NATO; USSR, Poland and East Germany for Warsaw Pact; plus neutral Finland – for a total of 500 different units. The Cold War is suddenly much hotter!

Three awesome wargames out in 2019 from Slitherine / Matrix Games

Field of Glory: Empires

Field of Glory: Empires is the new grand strategy game from AGEod and it will hit the stores  2019. Set in the Classical age of the Roman expansion, FOG: Empires has a  simultaneous turn resolution, or WEGO. The system allows players for smart manoeuvres, interceptions and last-minute escapes!

When it's time to hit the battlefield, players will be able to either resolve within the game or export and fight out into Field of Glory II: one of the best and more detailed tactical wargames ever published.

The game is now in public Beta-> http://slitherine.com/beta/cnda.asp?gid=789

Close Combat: The Bloody First

The Close Combat series essentially created the Tactical RTS genre back in the 90s: inspired by the classic board game Advanced Squad Leader it gave players the chance to lead a platoon-based force on World War 2 battlefields, from D-Day to Operation Market Garden, from Battle of the Bulge to the Russian Front. The same Tactical RTS spirit will be back in The Bloody First, the new chapter of the Close Combat series: players will be in charge of the US 1st Infantry Division, the Big Red One, from the North African theatre to the Italy invasion, and then on to the D-Day beaches. The new 3D Engine will allow to see the battlefield in full 3D or in the classical top-down view. 50+ vehicles, 300+ infantry teams, 100+ weapons with specific ammunition types, 3 campaigns and 36 battles, with integrated multiplayer lobby, co-op vs AI, and matchmaking forums.

The game will be out in 2019.

Panzer Corps 2

Over seven years after the release of the original award-winning and best selling hit  Panzer Corps, it's time to wage war again: the iconic WW2 wargame and spiritual successor to Panzer General is scheduled to release in 2019, so start your tanks' engines! Panzer Corps 2 is developed in the Unreal Engine to allow maps of unprecedented detail. The main campaign will unfold on the German side, with over 450 units, and the addition of a random map generator to allow for unlimited replayability.

Besides close combat and Field of Empires, not much else that excites me, hopefully some additional games make it.

Wonder if those mentioned are just first quarter games. i'm thinking WITE2 is supposed to make next year, and CS:Vietnam in slated to be released next year. FOG: Empires looks to be a huge release. Imagine the possibilities if it works out, an operational WW2 game with battles resolved in Steel Tigers at the tactical level. Applying this idea to other wars also, Napoleonic, Civil War, its got possibilities.

Or resolved in the CS engine, which Matrixlitherine are still developing!  O0

If we see either WitE 2 or Distant Worlds 2 in 2019, that would be fantastic. I have hope for WitE2, but DW2 development sounds a lot more iffy and uncertain...

Yes. Because non-WW2 games stir controversy.

I'm very excited for Field of Glory: Empires. It's a dream title for me. Hopefully, with it currently being in public beta, we're looking at a (very) early 2019 release.

I'm also intrigued by the new Close Combat game, specifically it being 3D and having a coop mode. I've played some of the Close Combat games in the past and enjoyed them, and I'm looking forward to this new one. Anything remotely realistic with coop has my attention.

Why a disappointment? I have watched many youtube videos, the authors seem to be impressed by it.

How many of them are

1. Getting the game for free?
2. Getting paid to promote it?

The game is awful. The pathfinding, the AI, boring battles, the command delays.

i thought ab had potential.  bought it myself for only $20 due to coupon so i am not losing sleep over it, but i am not really feeling it myself and not playing anymore.  not exactly sure why, just didn't grab me.

I play games for enjoyment and not frustration. AB is purely frustrating due to what I mentioned above

I saw that too. Unbelievable how political indoctrination has skewed the minds of some people at Apple. ::) Then again their CEO holds himself out as the new high priest of public morality everywhere... (I didn't remember voting for him, but hey... :-")

It's not as though the developer or Slitherine were making a political point by the release other than to publish a game on a "real" topic in a non partisan way. IIRC Apple also did this with Ultimate General Civil War because it featured the Confederate flag. Clearly, context be damned...  :idiot2::-\

It started with Zero Tolerance policies, which is really just an excuse for zero thinking.
