In corel draw 6 it was one click "convert to line drawing" and selecting a few options...  just saying

CorelDRAW! did have some bitchin' memory leaks though

My wife insists that it says dyslexia but what does she know.

This is a good find.  I don't have adobe ps but I do have Gimp.  Might have to see if I can replicate this procedure in Gimp because yeah, you could make some nice counters this way.

I'll have to look up the name of them, but I have a "suite" of free Photoshop filters and one of them is "lineart" that will do exactly what that tutorial does in one click (with sliders for adjustments to suit your needs).

Now that you mention it I think Gimp has a one push button to convert an image to a pencil drawing as well.

Ok, I found the photoshp filter that I use to create lineart.  It is made by "Xero" and they have a large collection that is a free download.  I use a bunch of these filters a LOT.  A must for Photoshop users.  First, here's the link to them:

http://www.xero-graphics.co.uk/freeware.html

If you scroll down, you'll see that "lineart" is included in this free collection.

Now, I will show the example.

First, a little combat tank that somebody used in some obscure little war a long time ago:

Next, we open up the Xero lineart filter on it and tinker with the sliders and check boxes until we see the desired results in the preview window:

And here's a couple of examples of the output (which happens rather quickly - but could take a little while on very large images):

Enjoy!

P.S.  If you've always wanted to own a copy of Photoshop but always thought it was too expensive or out of reach...Adobe has made the entire Adobe CS2 suite available for a free download.  See: http://www.mobilemag.com/2013/01/14/adobe-cs2-is-now-available-for-free-sort-of/

Note that there's been a mish-mash of "no, you still need to be a license holder" vs "no, it's free".  Go with what you feel is best.  Personally, if Adobe themselves puts it on their website where anybody can access it and they all have universal serial number keys that everybody and anybody can use, then I think it's a free download.  FWIW though, I still use my purchased version 7.0 because I have all the filters and patterns and tweaks in it just the way I like it.  :)

here's an interesting blog about making digital game art, but has some good ideas that can be used for printed graphics, too.
