Title: I remember FRIDAY
Post by: Martok on January 05, 2018, 01:58:56 AM

I'm off these next two days (at least in theory!), so I'm definitely going to get some gaming in.  I'm currently jonesing for both Oriental Empires and Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock

I could listen to Nat King Cole for like EVER.  O0

I'll be driving - most likely pCars 2 and F1 2017 - I must get over my dislike of Monaco....ALL my F1 seasons in ALL my F1 games either stop at Catalunya or Monaco!

I'll also continue my AAR of my Battle of Britain:Eagle boardgame

Have a good weekend everyone and whilst doing so spare a thought for our very own fellow Grogs Bawb and Denise please http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=21211.0

Well I've been digging into Horizon zero dawn and Persona 5 on PS4 along with Zelda breath of the wild on switch.

On pc I've been playing mostly Chronicron and still plugging away at WitW. Might also try to get more time on Tomb Raider (the reboot) just to finish it. I figure I'm about 40% done on it.

Stuck on a boss fight in Hellblade that is just kicking my buttocks repeatedly. To let out some frustration about that, started playing Viking: Wolves of Misgard too. Think of it as Diablo set in mythical Scandinavia. And it's actually better than I expected. Expedition: Viking next to complete my wintertime Viking trifecta.

I'm going to get in a few rounds of Nemo's War 2nd Edition and then get GMT's Colonial Twilight back to the table for a few more plays to get more of a feel for it.

Next will probably be...talk about analysis paralysis. I've no idea. There's essentially 12 games on my table right now (literally), seven of which are still in shrink.

Sort of up in the air. I'm taking a break from Mass Effect Andromeda after putting 60 hours into it over the past couple of weeks. My goal was to bang Cora and its all mission accomplished on the Tempest in that regard.

I'll definitely play ARMA 3. I've been running through the showcase scenarios to see how they've improved with all the patching that has been done over the years. Many of them I haven't looked at since the game was initially released!

I'm still itching to play a good space 4x. Been tooling around with Stellaris, but I think I may want to move onto something else. Believe it or not, MOO3 is calling to me.

I also may fire up TOAWIV and/or Mius Front for something a little more groggy and a little more 20th century.

Stay warm grogheads, wherever you my be.

I'd love a good 4x space game that isn't super complicated and requiring hours of learning curve time.

I have MOO 1 and 2 on GOG but I haven't put one minute into either after buying them a few years back.

Also have Starflight 1 and 2 on GOG, but again...time.

Rebel Galaxy is kind of fun in spurts but it's not 4x, more like Freespace.

Given up? Hardly! But definitely taking a break. I should probably boot up Falcon BMS, just to stay current with all I had learned. Someone in the BMS forums is offering to fly some training ops with me, so maybe I'll try to coordinate a few flights with him.

BC I like Rebel Galaxy but like you say it's not really deep...after a few hours I felt I had seen it all.

I would like a game with spaceship design, construction and capital ship combat, single player, with a decent campaign. I know there are several choices but I would like to know your preferences/favorites.

Polaris Sector is a fantastic option, especially if you are looking for deep, meaningful ship design and tactical fleet combat that rewards smart vessel and fleet composition. Seriously, its got some of the best ship design and tactical fleet combat in the business.

I might put in more time with Atlantic Fleet. Yesterday I played a single battle, the Bismark versus the Rodney, King George V, Norfolk, and another British heavy cruiser (can't recall the name). Managed to sink all of them with medium damage to Bismark. That was a LOT of fun. Rodney took forever to sink, but King George V went down after three broadsides (and a massive explosion too, so I must have nailed something critical). Rodney took about 16 broadsides before she finally went under the waves.

The fun thing is, I could replay this scenario and get wasted without sinking a single British ship.

The boring games revolve around playing the German side and hunting convoys. Once you sink the escorts, the transports just run and are no match for you. The only challenging scenario is running a U-boat versus three British battleships (can't recall their names) and four British DDs escorting. First torpedo run I put four torps out there, three of which went into one of the BBs and blew her apart, with the fourth missing (meant to hit three battleships with that spread, but the unfortunate BB that was immediately sunk just happened to get right in the way). That pissed off the British DDs, whom immediately went after me. It took a few turns, but I got a couple of DDs lined up so I surfaced, let loose a couple of torpedoes, and missed the DDs. One of the torps hit one of the remaining BBs, though, and sank it (after a secondary explosion). My U-boat was immediately pounded with depth charges and we did not survive. But, scratch two Brit BBs. ;D

Anyway, it's more engaging than Pacific Fleet, and I liked that one on the iPad.

Well I have been off since Thursday, and off till Monday!
So enjoying my four day weekend.

Distant Worlds Universe

Stellaris (possible) or Polaris Sector

I keep thinking maybe Pike and Shot, or M2TW - IB2: Conquest of Britannia - a well done Arthurian Age mod (or picking up Field of Glory II)

I'm really just playing it by ear today. By the way Martok, very nice tune.

I am definitely resolved to at least think once again about getting back into my Red Thunder mp with Yskonyn!  :bd: :hide: L:-)

Not much doubt I'll be doing a turn of FIRE IN THE GROGS TOO, too. And maybe producing/posting up the Turn 3 DAR of our game.

I've been picking at Unity of Command: Black Turn again recently, for no good reason other than I do like the system. ;)

I expect to be restarting my Armenian campaign in Rome 2 TW Empire Divided soon, now that I've got a general handle on how things work.

I've been doing some verrrrry preliminary preparation for a Total Warhammer: Mortal Empires Bretonnian campaign, but unsure that I'll start that this weekend.

If this is much like past weekends, I won't actually succeed at 3/4 or more of this list...  :crazy2:

Hollandspiele "Battles on the Ice".  Tom Holland has begun to tip over gaming's table of assumptions.  It's beautiful...said like Tom Cruise at the end of "Taps".

WS&IM with my son...I posted a picture of two chits on a blue field and got near 170 likes on Facebook.  This game runs deep among our kind.  Notable.

JTS Jena (x2), although I must needs rouse Doug from his slumbers...

Jena KS

A lot of playtesting.  Three projects now, I think me.

And one is gamed out when one is dead.  Selah.

Jarhead, I think MOO3 is to you what BOTF is to me -- that one space 4x title you keep returning to, despite its age and whatever flaws it has.  :)

I would ask what kind of space 4x experience you're looking for, but I have to believe you already own dang near all of the games in that genre anyway.  :P

Well first of all, there are only three DLC that actually add content -- Leviathans, Utopia, and Synthetic Dawn.

And of those three, Utopia is the only true "expansion", along with being the only DLC that warrants being rated as a "must-have" in terms of what it adds to the game.

Leviathans and Synthetic Dawn are both just "story packs", and while they're worth getting *at some point*, you definitely don't need them to enjoy Stellaris.

Incidentally, Barthheart's and Jarhead's recommendation for Polaris Sector is a good one, but I do feel compelled to add this bit:  While the ship design and combat is indeed fantastic -- still probably the best I've seen in a 4x title -- the game can be a bit lacking in other areas.  One criticism in particular is the dearth of a decent exploration phase at the beginning; going out into "the final frontier" and discovering new worlds can feel somewhat shallow and/or bland.  That's obviously not a problem for a lot of players, but I would be remiss if I didn't mention it.

You want Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars (the one released two years ago).

I know it's received something of a mixed reception among players (I'm pretty sure most of the bad reviews were from MOO/MOO2 diehards), but I've honestly enjoyed the time I've spent playing it.  It's a fun & polished space 4x game with high production values, and it's easy to just jump into and play.

Out of curiosity, Martok, what is it about the exploration aspect of Polaris Sector that you find lacking or bland? I don't find it much different than any other 4x. There are mineral rich worlds, Gaia type planets, anomalies revealing advanced technologies and even precursor components that move a loose story along. Yes, the sheer number of anomalies to discover is nothing compared to Stellaris and in PS each world or star does not have to be scanned or surveyed individually. In general, due to the need to survey and research everything in Stellaris, this is actually a part of the game that gets very tiresome for me. I like the nice change to Polaris where exploration is much quicker and does not hold the other aspects of the game back.

You're definitely right though, each game excels in a different area, so in my opinion any self respecting 4x gamer must have them all!

Overall, i am mostly playing Civilization IV (Warlords and Beyond the sword) and Battlevoid Harbinger. I have to say that i am understanding now why people say that Civilization IV is the best Civilization so far. Battlevoid Harbinger is proving to be an excellent game and i am having a lot of fun with it.

After hours of getting my ass kicked over the course of 6 days by one particular melee in Hellblade, I FINALLY beat it...and now am totally flummoxed by the next puzzle :/

I chalk some of the flummoxing up to exhaustion. But I am very happy to have finally beat those 6-7 bosses in Hellblade. It's a fantastic game but man is it hard.

Going to play some Vikings: Wolves of Midgard to cool down and then maybe start some Expeditions: Viking tomorrow.

Did a lil Il2 BoS with SDR. After we got past our runways spins for takeoff jitters, we got a couple of successful missions in. Now that I got my new Joystick setup for Xmas, I'll be giving this one more time.

My first dive on target, of course the 'button' that I thought I had programmed to drop bombs, was NOT programmed to drop bombs!... Murphy's law I guess. The next attack after revisiting my key mapping it worked just fine though.  :crazy2:  O0

I bought Order of Battle WW2: Panzerkreig.

Bad point, they update the engine every time they have a new release.  Thus, my core units are not there if this is a linked campaign.

Good point, they keep updating the AI.  I'm having to rerun the first part of the war as the Germans and the AI is already playing better than it did last time I played through.  Still, I've got to run through the entire thing so my core units and strategic choices will transfer over to the new one.

Well first off, it's not just me.  Polaris Sector's "eXplore" phase (or lack thereof) has long been considered by many to be one of its main drawbacks.  (I dislike using the term "criticism", since from the beginning, the dev has made it clear the game wasn't about the "wondrous exploration of space".  At its heart, Polaris Sector is a wargame.)

Polaris Sector doesn't just have fewer types of things to discover than in Stellaris, it has fewer types of things to discover than in most other 4x games, period:  No space creatures.  No minor races/civilizations.  No wandering ships or random encounters.  Not much in the way of interesting features on planets that make them unique and/or encourage colony development in a certain direction.  Heck, even the planet types themselves aren't as varied or interesting as in most space-strategy titles.

In this, we agree completely.  One of the changes to Stellaris 2.0 that appeals to me is that you start out with your home system already surveyed, and that star systems in general won't take quite so long to explore.

Can't really help you on steam. My install is from the CD. However, I would imagine you would simply apply the patches to the proper location in the steam library. You'll have to do some due diligence to choose which mod is the right one for you and which patches to apply.

I have to say that i am understanding now why people say that Civilization IV is the best Civilization so far.

You know, I actually owned Civ IV at one point, but I never got that into it for some reason.  (And of course, now I don't know what I did with my copy of it. >:( )

I had problems getting into it as well, mostly because it's not very good looking. On my main desktop however, it looks fairly good. You can get it for cheap on GOG and Steam...i find that Warlords has a lot of nice scenarios, so i would recommend this one first. The best is to get the complete edition however imho.

Martok, I have an extra copy on Steam I would be happy to gift you if you want it. I think it's just the base game, but hey, free!  :)
Thanks pal, but I'm pretty sure it'd be wasted on me.  Like I said, I wasn't able to get into the game anyway (and I owned the Complete Edition), plus it's not like I don't already have a bunch of games I haven't spent enough time with on top of that.

Sincerely appreciate the offer, though.  :)

I never picked up Expeditions: Conquistador but I just played about an hour of Expeditions: Viking and it is quite choice.  :D
