Title: The Expanse (SyFy)
Post by: Nefaro on December 15, 2015, 01:09:15 AM
Just watched the first episode of SyFy's new series The Expanse (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3230854/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1).

This looks pretty damn good already.  O0

I've never read the series of novels.  Wouldn't be surprised if someone here has.

That would be me. The books were great and I thought the first episode got off to a good start. Congrats to SyFy for moving back towards solid science fiction.

SyFy has definitely been improving their in-house stuff lately.  With actual Sci-Fi!  8)

Did anyone catch 'Childhood's End' last night on Syfy? The book made quite an impression on me when I was young.

Yes.

It's... okay.  The production value seems generally decent too.  My non-committal attitude is more due to the story itself, but it beats most run-of-the-mill junk I suppose.  Didn't "wow" me as much as The Expanse's first episode did.

No.

What are you talking about?

Also... are "gundams" those japanese robot-things?

*sigh*

I suppose others will eventually get around to watching it after a year or two, and then finally show up to discuss.   :-\

You can now watch Episodes 1-4 on Syfy

Most Gundam stories are about a political and military conflict between a confederation (or federation) of Earth-based governments, and a number of colonies in the solar system -- typically traveling along Earth's orbit and on the Moon, though sometimes with further outposts at Jupiter or wherever. I don't recall one where the colonies are around Mars and the asteroid belt, though.

Thus the quip: earth and colony political disputes, but with no giant robots, and with more asteroid belts.

Thanks for filling me in.

I've never been much for Japanese cartoons/anime, so you can assume that I know almost nothing of the references.   ???

Good time for some new reading.  Been in a bit of a gaming funk once again.

I enjoyed the first episode.  Fell asleep during the second due to overwork and one too many beer.  I'll try to watch it again tomorrow.

Seems decent so far.  Not really digging the whole hipster cop subplot though.

So, SyFy cancelled this today.

Anyone still watching?  I thought it was honestly a great show.  The episode this week was totally seat of your pants.

I jinxed it though, I told my wife while we were watching "You know, if SyFy cancels this before the story is done, I'm going to go and fling my poo at their office building".

Here's hoping Netflix picks it up.  The reviews were strong enough.

Bring back Firefly!!!!

If Firefly was cancelled today, it probably would've been brought back.  Modern streaming pretty well means there's always a chance for something to get an extended lease on life.

The Expanse's production company, Alcorn, actually responded to the cancellation with a press statement saying they're sad "their run on SyFy had ended" and looked forward to the show's future elsewhere.  They seem pretty confident it'll keep going, but that could be corporatespeak.

They had issues at the time.  Baldwin and Tuydik were almost in fistfights pretty commonly.

Baldwin is a very devoted Conservative Republican.  He doubled down on that after his time on Firefly.  Whedon half the time had to play referee back when was less out about it.

They pretty much all hate him now.  I can't imagine Firefly without Jayne.

Huh. Well just shows you that some actors can still be professional and show on-screen chemistry, even if they don't get along when the cameras are off.
Title: Re: The Expanse (SyFy)

The story was that they, aside from Tudyk, got along fine with him at the time.

He got deeply devoted to the Conservative cause after Firefly, and got in with the Alt-Right when it came about.  He also supported GamerGate.

He's very educated, very well spoken, and likes to troll the left.  You can check out his twitter and see what I mean.  After a few years of him doing so even people that stuck by him like Whedon are at odds with him.

I think he still gets along with Nathan Fillion though.  He did a guest spot on Castle.

Meh.

I hope Netflix chokes and all the good shows start popping up elsewhere.  After professional political activists bought in & started taking over in the past year.

Since A-Prime started funding series for IPs such as Conan and Middle Earth, maybe that shift has already begun.  O0

As for The Expanse, I always had the impression that SyFy was scraping the bottom of their bank account to fund it.  My first guess is that they couldn't continue to do so and still have money left for other stuff.  Unfortunate.

From what I read, no worries about George Soros' the Expanse on Netflix.

Looks like the main suitor is Amazon, as Alcorn had already negotiated US streaming rights with them.

Apparently SyFy had a really bad deal with Alcorn, that gave Netflix and Amazon the lions share of VoD and streaming shares, which left SyFy depending on live viewing.   That didn't do well for the show because clearly, everyone streams this stuff nowadays.

So SyFy was making no real money off Expanse, no real advertiser money because live viewing was weak and streaming/on demand was where its viewership was at.  SyFy had little choice given the expense of the show but to cut ties.

I wonder if Amazon can also get rights to show the previous SyFy-created seasons, or if it'll be an awkward seasonal split for awhile.

Still think A-Prime is gonna be hitting it big in the streaming industry before long.  Conan, Middle Earth/LotR, and now The Expanse?  Take my money!

I don't think it'll be that awkward.  The problem SyFy had initially is that they only bought live distribution rights to the Expanse.  Amazon had US streaming rights already.

If the Amazon deal goes through, and it looks likely it will, it'll all be under one roof really fast.

I was danged close to ending my Amazon Prime subscription.  Not going to now.

The first three seasons are already on Amazon. That's where I've been watching them. They're not (yet) on Prime itself though. $1.99 for SD and $2.99 for HD per episode. The seasons are short so no great financial hardship.

Yep.. I think only the first 2 seasons are on Prime right now.  Which encompasses only the first book.
