Title: Steel Division patch adds some great things but puts AT guns in buildings!!!!Ste
Post by: Destraex on December 06, 2017, 06:52:20 PM
Steel Division players listen up!! A few awesome changes coming very soon in a beta we can all play!!! I like them as some hark back to wargame red dragon mechanics. However it make the game both more and less realistics. Depending on how these are implimented. I am not sure about a 57mm entering buildings!!!! I wonder is this is some kind of fortification element.
In a few words, here are the changes you'll be able to test in this beta:

* Vehicles will be able to go through forests & hedgerows (at your own risk, the penatly will be quite severe)
* Vehicles' critical hits will be repairable by supply units
* Light AT units (up to 57mm) will now be able to enter buildings
* Reworked global damage & critical hit systems
* Decreased plane resistance (especially on bigger planes like J88 or B26)
* Adjusted vehicle off-road speed (concerns about 80% of the vehicles)
* Increased Short/Mid range precision

Like I said I like most of the changes as long as the stats stay realistic. I don't want to see shermans defeating 88mm rounds just for game balance.
But one change I am confused about is putting light AT guns in buildings? What is the logic of this ? It may have been done rarely with as lot of time to prepare. Changing facing should be impossible in a building as well. Buildings need a chance to cave in and kill everybody inside. Buildings ARE NOT armour. They should not have walls of steel!!!!!

Instead of allowing them in buildings, why not allow AT guns to fortify with sand bags and a fixed arc a little like company of heroes does with the 17pdr. This is more suspsending of my disbelief than having what is essentially a large complex object plunk itself in a randomly constructed building. The roof may come down on top of them.

Putting AT in buildings is my favourite tactic in Close Combat.
In CC, their field of view becomes limited or cannot pivot anymore.
Wonder how this will be implemented in SD44

How historical is it though?

You'd have to think it's pretty historical. Can't we all imagine a situation where the commander has to hold a position? You'd camouflage however you could and if that means sticking an AT gun in a house, particularly on the outskirts of a town where you'd have a good field of fire. Probably not so realistic actually in a town with your restricted engagement distances - unless you were willing to lose the gun (an all costs thing).

I'm just basing this on the importance of keeping your assets hidden - if a building is all you have and it suits the situation, then it must have been done, surely?

If I remember right, CM allowed ATGs in houses, only during set up.  They couldn't be moved there.  I would imagine that a 37mm ATG could be maneuvered into a house with some work.  They are fairly small.

So it's both CC and CM.  I see the inspiration here.

Yes I am sure it happened. But this will be like a run to a building and then like infantry jumping inside I imagine. I guess in the grand scheme of things that would be acceptable.
Just have to see how easy it is. In close combat it was a thing. Albiet very slow to get into place unless you started already deployed in there.
Building has to be partially destroyed obviously as well.

In combat mission normandy german pioneers blew holes in hedges!!! This game should give infantry this ability... pioneers at least

It's out. Right click on steel division in your steam library. Go to properties.
Choose the BETAS tab and use the drop down to select the santa claus update.
A 90mb or so update will occur.

I don't recall about the East Front, but Germans liked to do it on the West Front from Normandy onward. There's even a famous segment (not sure how historical) of the b/w film The Longest Day (I don't know who directed this segment; there were different directors) about the drive by infantry, as the climax of the film, to take out what looks to be an 88 sited on the ground floor of a hotel or something like that.

Historical written accounts I've read recently put smaller guns in houses along defense routes pretty regularly.

It doesn't seem realistic in SD44's gameplay, though -- rolling up and deploying inside the house.

Yes but I think its enough to justify it. Because infantry at guns were getting wasted pretty easily in multi.

Yup. I would imagine they would disassemble the guns and assemble them inside.
Or use engineering equipment / vehicles to break down walls to roll the guns in.

I've seen some QF 6-pounder and US 57 mm Gun M1 in late war ETO buildings. Not a lot, but some. This is a small gun when compared to say the US 76mm or UK 17 pounder.

This, this, a thousand times this. I'm not complaining from a gameplay perspective at all.
