OK tech geniuses (and Mirth, too)

What's the downside to this, aside from it being a Kickstarter project

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1598272670/chip-the-worlds-first-9-computer

I get that you have to provide your own monitor / keyboard / mouse / etc, but we've all got those laying around in spades.
You have to be OK running Linux.  I can adapt.
Limited outputs?  You can daisy-chain a shit-ton of USB stuff together.

Seriously - I'm trying to find a downside.  Especially since I already backed it...    O:-)

A cheap copy of the $30 computer. Strawberry pi 2 I think it is called. It runs linux or windows 10 or others on a 4 core arm 7

sort of like the Raspberry Pi.

System on a chip has a come a long way in 15 years (seeing what we had in university days).  The Pi is fun to play with, and great way for your kids (and even older folk) to learn about computing and more.

That's amazing!
Regardless of how good a PC game may be it will always have its detractors and no matter how bad a PC game may be it will always have its fans.

That looks very interesting. I'm tempted to go for the combo with the keyboard/screen housing since most of the other stuff (connectors, etc) will probably be available aftermarket.

I'm really not sure this thing will have legs - 512 mb of RAM! ??? - I'm wondering if the lack of MS office alone will bring it to it's knees ? Open office is great, but still a 2nd-tier product. There are some pretty impressive claims - I'm not sure I think all of them are credible. It's one thing to run software at a minimum specs, but will it be usable? I hope that I'm completely wrong - for $9 I think it's a great deal - especially for RC/drone applications - but the adoption rate will tell the tale. For geeks like us it's a no-brainer  :))

Hey, it'll run the original Leisure Suit Larry series!  :D

Well, maybe just LSL 1, 2, and maybe 3...

bayonetbrant

Well, honestly, I'm planning to use the HDMI connector to plug it into the TV and use it as a media server / casual computer, and maybe a little bit of gaming on a 70" screen ;)
But I got the bundle w/ the portable housing, too, so I can take it on the go.  I might try to add one 1 add'l CHIP for the extra $9.

Yeah that 2 Pocket Chip bundle for $98 dollars seems like a no-brainer to pick up for my kids.
