DIY / Fundamentals of Wargame Design
Last post by Lowenstaat - March 13, 2024, 07:50:28 PM
I ran across this video of Clint Warren-Davey sharing what he considers the fundamentals of wargame design on Fight Club International's YouTube channel. If you're like me, then you probably have never gone beyond what Clint describes as steps 0 and 1 in the design process!

If the concept of professional level gaming is of interest to you, consider joining USA Fight Club (https://www.usafight.club/) or UK Fight Club or one of our international affiliates.
(https://www.fightclubinternational.org/)  The mission of the club is " to improve members' thinking, decision-making, and warfighting abilities through gaming experiences that are realistic, challenging, and fun.  The Club will provide a network and resources for a diverse body of civilian, government, academic and military professionals to explore and experiment with all types of games to educate, compete, train, and analyze the full spectrum of conflict warfare, to illuminate methods, concepts and capabilities that would be useful to ally and partner governments and militaries. The Club will advocate for wargaming in professional environments."  We have a Discord page for members.  You can also check out some of our X feeds here: https://twitter.com/USFightClub1 or here: https://twitter.com/UKFightClub1  For those interested in our Christmas Tournament, the UK Twitter feed has a description here: https://twitter.com/UKFightClub1

Here is an example of some of what the USMC is doing with COTS wargaming. You can probably advance to the 10 minute mark to start getting into the meat of the discussion.   I was part of this WarPlan game (and I had my a$$ handed to me, largely because I completely underestimated my opponent.  I and my team are doing much better in the next scenario).  It is a good discussion on some of the thought processes in planning

A wargaming buddy of mine, is one of "subject matter experts" on contract with the USMC to basically facilitate and play commercial wargames.

He is a retired history teacher, who spent his youth hanging out with the 'greats' in the SPI offices in the early 70s.

But he says he never thought anyone would actually pay him to play wargames...now he is in wargame heaven.

Isn't it always fun to read a thread and think "Hm, I really never looked much into that game, maybe I should Wishlist it" only to realize it's already in your library for more than a year with 0 hours played and never launched.

Some players have criticized the game for its AI behavior. For example, soldiers try to attack tanks with their fists if they come within 30 meters, ...

The Germans had very advanced fist technology and as everyone knows, Shermans just sucked. So 30m is about right...

I thought the mysterious long-awaited review was for the ASL-type game Tigers on the Hunt.  You're telling me it's been a Close Combat game this whole time!?  :TimeOut:
