Origins was excellent. Environmentally, one of the best of the series.

What about Assassin's Greed in Ancient Grease?
We could assassinate John Travolta before he makes Battlefield Earth.

Yeah, I might be playing my first Assassin's Creed game.

My wife plays these all the time on our PS4.  Till now I've just been content to watch.

I wasn't interested in Origins at all because I thought it was set in Old Kingdom Egypt, like 3000 BC, but it's not...it's set just as Hellenistic Egypt is about to fade away and the Romans are coming in, around 50BC. And it's great.

I am definitely getting Odyssey.

Well, greenmangaming has it for 56% off....so around $26 for basic version.

Might pull the trigger myself, although I played one of the earlier versions and never really got far.  Confused me:)

I like stealth/adventure games, but the Assassin's Creed has taken a number of turns towards a regular action game with role-playing elements after the first game.

This looks like Titan Creed.

I'm still waiting for the Feudal Japan one (playing as a Ninja).

Bah, their player base has a memory of a squirrel. I donít think theyíd care about a ninja game that came out more than 6 months ago.

I was already hoping back in the days before AC2 was even announced that it would take place in Feudal Japan.
I mean come on, what's more appropriate for an Assassin game than a Ninja?

Just curious for those that own Origins, any problem with CPU heat?  Read in a couple places the CPU gets very hot with this game.  Maybe just an isolated issue but seemed some folks expressed concerns.  Still on the fence, last thing I need is the game to fry my new PC:)

Maybe an early 20th century Assassin's Creed could be good, somewhere around the end of the First World War during the First Red Scare or even pre-war during the Balkan Wars, though "assassinations" and "1910's Balkans" might be a bit too touchy as a subject and area.

They made an AssCreed game set during the 1917 Russian Revolution, but unfortunately it was one of their silly little side-scrollers rather than a proper AC game.

Assassins Creed set in 1890's -1910's Paris would be spectacular. If you've played Saboteur you'll know why.

^what would be so great about that? They have already done late Victorian era London (syndicate) and theyíve done Paris too (Unity). These also happen to be my least favorite titles in the series and the ones I found most dull and boring. I donít see the draw of the late 19th and early 20th century in this game system.

...and Iíve played saboteur. I fail to see the connection. That took place in the 1940s with WWII as the backdrop.

I liked Syndicate to a certain extent because I love the era, but the game got a bit bloated and Ďsameyí - a little moreso than other AssCreeds. I stayed away from Unity because of the horrific launch but will pick it up now that a few years have passed. Never played Saboteur.

I didn't know they covered Paris - I'll have to check that out. EDIT: It's set in the freaking revolution. I hate that period.

I guess I just like Paris in that late 19th Century period. In Saboteur I liked roaming over the rooftops. I thought it was mysterious and cool.

Check out Unity once the Steam Summer Sale hits. I bet it will be reasonably discounted! If roaming around the city is what you liked about The Saboteur, then I bet you will really like AC: Unity too!

Looks nice and immersive. But.....

Observations:
Naval battles are comical.
Lots of RPG elements. AC wasnít an RPG when it began right?
The big battle looks wrong. They should be hoplites fighting in formation.
No stealth?  Are you even an assassin?
Title: Re: Assassins Creed heads to Anceint Greece!
Post by: ComradeP on June 15, 2018, 10:25:54 AM
Wow, that looks silly.

You're sailing around in an oversized wind-powered speedboat, with naval battles straight from some arcade game.

AC wasn't an RPG when it began in the sense that you picked attributes or abilities upon reaching a new level, but you did gain new attacks and abilities when you improved your sync with the ancestor (through completing missions). As noted, I've never played any game in the series beyond the first so I'm not sure how they handled it in other titles.

The first game also didn't really have what I would call stealth. Enemies could be in various states of alert based on spotting you and you doing something that wasn't "socially acceptable" like drawing a weapon, but you couldn't hide in the shadows or anything and it was rather generic. You could vanish in haystacks, roof gardens in a crowd of scholars or...when sitting on a bench in between two people. The scene at the 8 minute mark is actually pretty close to what stealth was like in the original, though you couldn't crouch like that.

I actually played the original a bit yesterday and was amused that moving very slowly when mounted somehow makes enemies oblivious to your presence (there was a "blend" function which made enemies ignore you more or less under certain conditions). It's a vintage open world game in the "you can scale this building or rock, but not this one" sense, and I've already uninstalled it.

Odyssey looks like a "streamlined" Deus Ex/Mass Effect/Splinter Cell/Dynasty Warriors/Titan Quest mash-up.

I'm not very fond of all the dumbing down in modern games.
Title: Re: Assassins Creed heads to Anceint Greece!
Post by: Jarhead0331 on June 15, 2018, 10:37:30 AM
I think it looks great and fun. This isn't supposed to be Mare Nostrum and the AC series has NEVER represented itself as a historical simulation. It is based very loosely on historical events and periods. If you're someone who demands exacting historical detail in your gaming, this is definitely a series that is going to rub you the wrong way.
Title: Re: Assassins Creed heads to Anceint Greece!
Post by: ComradeP on June 15, 2018, 10:45:54 AM
Well, they get the historical setting and feel "right" in most games from what I can tell, which is a considerable achievement.

I was hoping for a stealth/adventure game, as mentioned earlier. Judging by the gameplay footage, they've moved closer to what other developers are doing with their open world action/RPG games. The historical setting and feel is the ace, but the other cards they're holding don't trump what the others bring to the table.
Title: Re: Assassins Creed heads to Anceint Greece!
Post by: Jarhead0331 on June 15, 2018, 10:55:09 AM
You shouldn't judge the series based on playing the original in the series. The games have evolved quite a bit since the first title was released, what, at least 10 years ago? However, I think most of the mechanics you seem to be lukewarm about probably remain largely the same. I know the series isn't for everyone. I usually only enjoy it in small doses.

The ship combat in Black Flag was not authentic in the least but was arguably the most fun part of that game...hoping for the same here.

You gotta loosen up and have some fun, ComradeP.

It is very similar, but there are notable differences. Choices seem to be much more important and appear to really matter.  Additionally, the new exploration mode adds incentive to searching the map for objective clues and key locations. All points of interest in this mode are not shown with markers on the map, as it was traditionally in past titles.

Ultimately, if you like the series in general, you will like Odyssey.

Yes...no shortage of options. X4 isn't coming out until 11/30. I'm trying not to let myself get too excited over it. I mean, Rebirth was supposed to herald the second coming of Christ, and we know how that turned out.

Basically, I really liked Origins too, but I'm much more interested in ancient Greek history than I am Egyptian. And, really...it has Spartans. 'Nuff said.

Interesting pick of a chronological point since from about that time, the Greek homeland steadily loses power to Magna Grecia (Sicily and Southern Italy -- the Latin name "Great Greece" kind of says it all) and Persia (which runs things in Greece either as Persia or later as the Persians as run by various Macedonian factions).  I guess the assassins work for factions outside of the original Hellenic area?

The relevance of the date is the start of the Peloponnesian War, which factors heavily into the world and story line. You know you are playing a game loaded with content when it takes 4 hours and 30 minutes to get through the prologue. I finally have a Corinthian helmet. I'm happy.

There are battles, but donít expect a phalanx. It is LOOSELY based on history, as the series always has been. Places, names, people, legends, dress, etc.

So are there line battles?

There are battles, but donít expect a phalanx. It is LOOSELY based on history, as the series always has been. Places, names, people, legends, dress, etc.

  Sounds very cool.

I'll try some assassin's creed (starting with Black flag).  This was useful to me:

This is a superb game. Plenty to do and quite varied too. Not like Ghost Recon or Far Cry 5 open world games where they are pretty repetitive. This one has alot of variation.

The abilities upgrades are great. The engravings for weapons (to better stats, for example +4 Warrior Damage) are very good too. Lots of loot to be picked up.

I'm 8 hours in and I've just got off the starting island of Kefalonia.

Very much enjoying this.

So anyone who puts any weight on Angry Joe's reviews...here it is

I was initially blown away with the game. I really liked the combat. I loved the look. It looked massive. However, I'm starting to feel that grind that I've seen in Ubisofts games of the past - and that's mentioned in the review.

Not a bad game - but it's shortfalls start to come to the fore. I'm 18 hours in and I'm still going, but I'm on the verge of chucking the side missions.

There are some great things in the game...but there's some lazy shit in there too.

I know.  How many times can somebody scream this is Sparta?  Before it gets a little old.  And this is Athens is just confusing.  And this is the Argolid is okay, but odd.

i read some background in the game about a Japanese brotherhood of assassins. I hope this is foreshadowing of an upcoming title set in feudal Japan. Would be awesome.

The historical ninjas were really much more like assassin's creed assassins than the historical assassins would have been.  Confusing, but there you have it.  And why are the Templar's saddled with being the bad guys?  Is it all thanks to IvanHoe?

Did anybody accept the Kalydonian Boar mission in Phokis and survive ?

I wasted an evening on it before deciding to step away from it (rage quit describes it better).

Yes. Itís easily the hardest mission Iíve played in 26 hours of game time. I had to level up past the level of boar in order to succeed. Iíve fought several alpha animals since and none have been as difficult as the boar.

I want an Assassin's Creed set in 2018 in Castro Valley, where you have to ride BART every day to your shitty job in the city. The twist is it's still 2016 at Abstergo and Trump hasn't been elected yet.

Thinking of buying this new AC because of the Ancient Greece setting. Of course I'm still only about halfway through AC Origins after all this time. I've enjoyed Egypt but I suspect I will like this one even better because of the aforementioned setting.

For those of you who are playing Odyssey I have a question. In origins I leveled up my character leaning just as much to the archer aspect as I did close combat with sword. I tended to attack enemy settlements and forts by eliminating many enemies at range with the bow before going in and dealing with the rest in close combat. I haven't watched any play-through videos as of yet on YouTube. Do you have the same archer option for your character in Odyssey as I've chosen in Origins? Using the bow is probably my favorite thing in Origins.

^Yes! There are three areas that you can focus on in Odyssey. Archer, Warrior and Assassin. I find all of the unlockable abilities to be very useful. If you like Origins and have a preference for ancient Greece, you'll love the game. Its really great!

I am already further in Odyssey than I ever got in Origins.  It is a bit more RPG, has more content and I enjoy playing as Kassandra (nice voice acting).

I tended to attack enemy settlements and forts by eliminating many enemies at range with the bow before going in and dealing with the rest in close combat.

The fun part is trying different things.  You can use your bow at range, you can get close and assassinate them or you can go in swinging a spear.
With the RPG part of the game you can unlock the abilities that suite your playstyle (Archer, Warrior, Assassin or a mix of them, like Jarhead mentioned).
A big plus is that at any time you can reset all the abilities to try a new playstyle.

Thanks guys I appreciate the info. From your response and some of the reviews I've read most people seem to think Odyssey is overall an even better game than Origins. Some are even saying it's the best AC ever.

I haven't played all the Assassin's Creed games: maybe half or a little more. I always have fun for a while and get bored.

Not this one. This is BY FAR the best AC game I have played. I'll put it this way: by far my most fun ever in AC has been the naval bit in Black Flag, but here the naval combat is just as fun, and probably better because the ocean is bigger, yet I have my most fun playing on land. Not only have they added satisfying RPG elements, but the melee combat is GREATLY improved over what AC games have provided in the past. Reminiscent of Kingdom Come Deliverance except a bit easier to grasp.

Huge map, scores if not hundreds of quests, and they never got lazy on them, either: almost all the quest-givers are developed into characters. Better-than-usual story, too, with excellent voice-acting by the mains, Kassandra and Alexios (you pick boy or girl at the beginning and get to be K or A). And you get to meet Socrates, Hippocrates, Pythagoras, Demosthenes, Alcibiades, Pericles, Euripides, Sophocles and many more.

Even my wife is hooked. First time we've been hooked on the same game.

But there's always the "better price" aspect of waiting.

My OCD has some effect on my purchasing. But posts like yours makes me wants it/needs it more. Plus some of the most fun Iíve ever had gaming was in the naval sandbox in Black Flag. I rationed playing that game just so I could go back to some fresh content periodically.

I bought AC Odyssey through Humble Store, and got with it the (yet to be released) remastered version of AC3.

I wonder if I should continue my game of AC3 of which I'm in the middle (in the middle of procrastinating :P ), or wait for the remaster and spend all those countless hours all over again.
