as someone who joined the ranks of ipad possessors this xmas, would love to hear thoughts / recommendations for wargames --

(kinda surprised at the relative lack of games in this category -- seems mobile is still the venue for games of the 'angry birds' variety...)

anyway, some obvious ones i've come across

1. Battle Academy -- looks cool, but $20 is steep -- worth it?

2. Combat Mission Touch -- intriguing and cheap, but lots of reports of instability / crashing

3. Battle of the Bulge -- also intriguing, less cheap -- and worry is there's not much replayability here

thoughts? recommendations?

Combat Mission is a must as Bulge probably is. BA isn't worth so much if you already have the PC version, otherwise it's a good wishlist item. Levee en Masse is good as is Civil war: 1863. I like Civ Revolutions. For arcade, I like Artillery Battery.

There's also Phantom Leader.

Very old, but there are some ideas here:

I think theres an updated one from EasyTech called European War 3 also.

That reminds me; there's a great straight port of Risk.

Many thanks for these links & suggestions -- :)

As much as I love wargames, I find a need to relax from even "lite" ones. iPad Mah Jomg fits the bill for calming play.

Battle for the Bulge seems to be the greatest and latest

Perhaps but, at the price of iPad games, even down-out types can afford not to have to choose because of price - Battle Academy being a possible exception. Had I not been paid for a review, I'd given a miss since I had the PC version.

i'm hesitant to pick it up because of complaints about the limited playability -- sounds like one scenario, essentially.  but maybe those complaints are overblown-??

Bismarck

Two scenarios; one short and one long.  Many possible strategies playing both sides. Where did you hear negative opinions?

negative reviews in a place i should probably know better than to pay attention to -- i.e. the "User Reviews" in the app store.  Still, you start to see a few "this is a cool game but $10 is too much for so little content" comments and you start to wonder...

EDIT -- just saw spelk's link to the Quarter to Three review -- this is the kind of indepth intelligent review i should pay attention to -- and certainly sounds like Battle of the Bulge is worth the investment --

I've tried battle academy lite so far on ipad, seems good, I missed the pc version.

Also been trying something called Pocket War HD, a real time ww2 game that is sort of a really lite operational game.

Wonder if they wil develop axis and allies for mobile port.

I do enjoy the Rommel game on Android though.

I am also new to the iPad world of war games.  I saw this while hunting around for titles.  Has anyone played it?

I have World Conqueror, which is okay, and pretty similar to the EW games I think. I've only played it through twice in about six months, though.

The folks that made Battle of the Bulge apparently have a game called Drives On Moscow coming out next week:

I like BotB, but unless you're really into it specifically, you might not like the game. It's very similar to an old board wargame called Turning Point: Stalingrad. I'm too lazy to see if there's a connection.
