Listened to the show last night.  Good discussion gents.

I'm a little confused at the logic of how being a gaming culdesac is a positive for wargaming however.

1:  I will now threaten to take B_C''s equipment away from him.  Drive to the toasty Southwest to do it if I must.

2:  @Bison:  Something I've been thinking about a lot.  Folks have wrung their hands about where war gaming is going, especially the groggy kind, for years.  I think that was always based on a false apprehension, viz., that to be a vital part of the entertainment scene, we had to go back to the days of Avalon Hill and SPI and to sell the sorts of numbers and have the sort of cultural presence that particularly the former did.  Those fellows bought billboards for heaven's sake.  However big they really were -- my perspective is admittedly distorted -- the days of "big wargaming" are over.  Origins (once a wargaming con), GenCon (once sort of a wargaming con), Essen, UK Games Expo, &c., have given us more or less space -- usually less -- but even at Origins "Cool Stuff, Inc." didn't bring a single war game to sell on their discount racks like they did last year.  Please understand that I didn't want this to be the case, but PCs, consoles, and, yeah, lighter boardgame fare has sucked the air out of the room.

So, we are where we are, but, rather than collapse to sackcloth and ashes, I choose to be pleased by the fact that ConSim Expo does as well as it does and publishers like LnL, Fliying Pig, Compass, OSS, OSG, and even some interesting foreign interlopers have thrived in an environment made possible by rapidly-declining printing costs, the internet, crowd funding, and a few other factors as well.  I am very curious to see how long this all endures -- does OSG survive Mr. Zucker's inevitable passing, for example -- but I'm selfish enough to say that I've got games enough to play for more than my lifetime.

Easily the most interesting case in all this is GMT where groggy games are getting bustled to the back of the queue by gentler, more euro-centric designs.  The influence of the euros on this company is evident and logical..  It now appears, though, that the P500 has really become the P-better-get-closer-to-1,000 as mega-hits like TS and C&C:A crowd out the heavier stuff that has languished.

People drive into cul-de-sacs all the time.  They often find very fine things there.  Just don't expect the same kind of traffic and attention you'd get on Main Street.  That's reserved for Hanseatic traders making soldiers from wheat.

Terraforming Mars is a really good game. (I now own the base game and expansion boards)  The rules are fairly simple, but the game has really good depth and incredible variability with the number of card combinations possible.

I'll second this. Tons of replay value, and the different corporations give interesting start points for the different players. Once word of warning : players will need some serious space, because you are going to have A LOT of cards splayed out in front of you by the end of the game.

I've enjoyed listening to episode 10, as I've been browsing the forums.

Ladies in wargaming are totally underrated in my opinion, and I guess there are far more playing than we might suspect.

My daughter is pretty consistent at giving me a hard time whenever she plays wargames with me. She doesn't always win, but she does put up a good fight. She also plays a lot of SP stuff and rarely loses, even on higher difficulty settings. She's recently been playing Ark Survival, Hitman, Mount and Blade, Skyrim, Endless Legend, Vermintide: End Times, Warhammer Total War, Attilla Total War etc...

Thanks for the latest guys. Great topics! I forgot to do the drinking first, so actually paid attention ... On the other hand, just had a wisdom tooth pulled out, still on strong painkillers, maybe that did the trick?

Games that need they graphics updated

I am a Finn, we've got 100 words for 'snow' as well, so I'd go for any series that depict an era with all seasons, but don't have snow versions of the mapboard. I really like the new LnL Nations At War mapboards for instance, two sided, and normal, and snowed in. Nothing turns me down like playing a winter scenario on a normal map.  L:-)

Games with superb graphics

As for the maps, I've gotta go for COH Guadalcanal as well. Especially the beach mapboard is outstanding. They've really done a great job as you guys said: maps that look great but don't interfere with counters. I don't own Guadalcanal, but do have the AtB 2nd Ed with the new maps, together with PoH which looks great too. A great series from this point of view (too!). Manuals, counters, maps, really great stuff. A special shout for the new LnL NaW maps too.

I had not looked at Liberty Roads counters, but agree there as well. Nothing like a little role playing when gaming, and unique counters / formations are just that.

Restarting a game series

With the little time I have for boardgaming, World at War's really grown into me. I really liked the old counters with their retro font. They are a bit of a pain to read, but looking that awesome, I'm not complaining. I recall the old maps were quite awful when I looked at them at the net before buying my first game, but when playing, they are really functional so no complains there either.

Of the box sets I own Eisenbach Gap, Death of First Panzer and Blood and Bridges, so missing only Op Garbo and Untold Stories. With the restart, I'll probably not go for those titles (or their new bundles as they are), but will definitively buy the When the Lion Roars (Arab-Israeli Wars) when it comes out. The new art looks absolutely great though, so I wouldn't be surprised seeing myself buying into them later.

My 0.02 for restarts, for sure

Command and control on the battlefield

Agreed here too. It can be done quite easily so why not. World at War at platoon scale for instance expects the formation HQ to be within few hexes of everyone, otherwise there's severe penalties. No excuse for not modeling this.  :knuppel2:

Gotta throw in the Panzerblitz Hill of Death restart, that ended up with just that box set and one magazine addition to go with. Great maps, great counters (especially!), new rules. I might be the only person in the world feeling this way though.

There aren't a lot of people that liked the PB reboot, as they felt it was a different game, and not merely an update of the classic.

But I guess my point that I did not make that well was that there are some restarts that seem to be working, like LnL's NaW 2ndEd, CoH 2ndEd, WaW85 reboot, that went well. And some that did not like PB HoD

Thanks for the season guys  :)

My oldest d6 set that I've had since the beginning are from the AH Panzer Leader copy I bought in 1983. The oldest d6 I've bought since is from my original 1961 copy of AH D-Day that I bought from BGG marketplace. Those predate my birth by a good few years, so I am still in the middle of coming up with a story as how I'd had them from the go...

On another note: Maltese Falcon  :smitten:

Animadversions:

@SofaKings:  Thanks for your concern, but I've taken to drinking heavily and it does help.

@Barth:  JTS loves you anyway, as it loves all people.

@MD:  Your "Faramir" line has made you my wife's favorite.

@Brant: The Hobbits are rubbish and should die consumed by flames.  Get a pirate copy of the Rankin-Bass.  It's much better and hews more closely to the story line.  And my nerdrage is a poor ember compared to my beloved's on this topic.

The worst book-to-movie translation, without exception, is the Space-Movie-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named to which one of the lesser denizens of the Hollywood hog wallow tried to attach the title of a great book by Robert Heinlein.  Hint:  Doogie Hauser plays Himmler.

My oldest die is easily the Gamescience die of which I've spoken.  Tragically, it is no longer under warranty.

no need for a pirate.  I have it here somewhere in a box

The Peter Jackson flicks are not the Tolkien books.  They're a massive LotR prequel loosely based on the books, starring Christopher Lee's thoroughly-British dentalwork.

But as long as you don't compare them to the books, it's not a bad yarn.  It's just not the books.

That's b/c they already had a movie written and went shopping for the rights to a media license they could slap on it, and found out the ST rights were available.  The bought them, w/ options for sequels, and slapped them on an existing screenplay.

As soon as they jettisoned the power armor, though, the key plot of the back half of the book with the un-named platoon sergeant goes out the window, b/c you can see everyone's faces and there are no surprises.

Plus, it's clear they studied tactics at the George Lucas School of Braveheart Battle Scenes Only With Blasters Instead of Broadswords.
