Right, though:

Scenario 1 (circa 1985):

Bro, you play ASL? So do I, bro!

Scenario 2 (circa today):

Bro, WTF is a meeple, bro?

???   :-[

I used to play ASL. A lot. I played the base game to death, mostly solo, back in the 80s. I guess I burned out on it big time and just had no interest in checking it out again.

For better or worse, the common ground is probably Axis & Allies.

Lord knows I've owned a few copies of A&A over the years.

I think I own every iteration if it except for the World War One version.

I would hope not.

common ground among wargamers.

what's the 'common ground' today, or close to it?

COIN games?

LNLT?  Probably more ASL players

Columbia block-style mechanics?

I don't think any one game is the "common ground standard" for the hobby - I think it's more about the mechanics (as you mentioned); hex and counter, block games, CDG's, CAG's, miniatures and now days "COIN".  Of those mechanics, I'd say that 'hex and counter' is the gold standard with the others being variations/deviations.

Another game that is widely played is the old Avalon Hill Afrika Korps.  That is still being played in board game conventions.

It does not have a lot of pieces and can be played in a (long) afternoon.  I'm not saying that Axis and Allies or ASL are not played more, but Afrika Corps is still played very heavily.

Afrika Corps was my first game. I still have it, but have not played it for a very long time.
