Since all the base housing was destroyed maybe they should consider building a new hangar/hurricane shelter this time around.  Leaving $2 billion in jets just sitting in a state prone to hurricane with little protection is no different than lining your fighters up in nice little rows at Pearl Harbor for the Japs to strafe.  The brass must be too used to taking a "bye" on the golf course if they think they should get a "bye" for this.

(Stupid ?) noob question : jets can fly at speeds over 1000 kmh, how can winds of 200 kmh damage them if you turned them facing the wind ?

it was more an issue of all the debris flying around that damaged them

Did you see the state of the hangars that were there, too?

Look, hurricanes hit the South all the time, and there's no shortage of bases out there to get hit.

Homestead AFB was hammered years ago.
Hunter Army Airfield was murdered when a hurricane hit Savannah
Multiple hurricanes have damaged Goldsboro AFB
Shaw AFB in SC has been flooded at least 3x by hurricanes
MacDill AFB has taken multiple direct hits.  Ditto Key West and the NAS there.

and you don't even want to get started on everything that's parked in Tidewater VA

Shit happens, and guys fix it afterwards.  Tyndall is going to be shut down for a few years, but they'll rebuild it and it'll be operational again in 3-5 years.  In 50+ years of tracking major hurricanes, we've had ONE that wiped out a military base.  They're doing OK.

Oh yeah, and...
