What - no Steam sale thread?
No purchases yet but Cold Waters and Assassins Creed Odyssey are -50% off and Jurassic Park Evolution is -75% off.
I had my eye on Cold Waters but two things put me off. One, it seems like each combat feels like a scenario, and not part of a dynamic world like the Silent Hunter series. Two, patrolling is limited to dragging your ship around a strategic map, running into "encounters". Is that right?

Thread title edited.
I got Cold Waters in the sale - for the most part it is as they claim "the spiritual successor to Red Storm Rising" (that I played to death when it came out) with one huge caveat - NO "AAR" REPLAYS !!!! - can you believe that?
Picked up the following so far:
Decisive Campaigns Barbarossa
Surviving Mars
Wars of Napolean
Arsenal of Democracy
I was tempted to buy a very bad looking Destiny Christmas pullover, but... I didn't.
No games bought so far either.
Red Dead 2 and Warframe will lead me into the new year just fine with some Elite, DCS and the various PBEM games ongoing as well.

You're more or less right. I'd characterize the combat more like Total War, where you're zooming into the tactical side for combat from the operational layer. And yes, patrolling is dragging your ship around, hopefully with purpose, running into encounters. For example, if you're mission is to intercept a wolfpack heading for the GIUK gap, you might want to sit at a chokepoint, find deep water where they're likely to run through enroute, etc. If you're playing to win, you put more thought into it than just randomly dragging around the map.
My beef with Cold Waters is that all of the engagements end up being in direct path acoustic range. There's no ability to use the better sensors on your U.S. sub to get contact 30 miles out and maneuver yourself into a position of advantage when they get close. You always start out in front of the enemy, with the enemy heading towards you, and you're forced with a decision to turn right or left to get out of the way...usually before you have enough TMA to know the base course of the enemy.
Even with that limitation, it's a fun game. It's far easier to sit down for a few engagements with Cold Waters than it is for the brain-burn and time-consuming Silent Hunter. But you have to appreciate Cold Waters for what it is. It's not SH or Dangerous Waters by far.
Thanks very much Toonces. Yeah, you pretty much confirmed my fears. I just want Silent Hunter in a modern setting goddammit!
Oh well, saved some cash.
Picked up Scythe Digital Edition.
So far this might be a first for me this Christmas but currently no plans to buy anything. Combination of dealing with a chronic home family medical issue, new job and just too many games that I haven't played. Nothing has come out that was compelling enough to overcome these barriers.
Con
Think I'm going to pick up Gauntlet: It's on sale for $5!!
Nothing really. Got the Shock Force upgrade but that's not on sale.
I picked up Wings of Prey: Special Edition on GOG for $2.49. It looks like the base game + the Wings of the Luftwaffe DLC (and minus what sounds like a horrendous DRM scheme)
Actually kind of a fun sim with pretty good graphic and decent flight modelling. (Yeah, like I've really flown most of these planes.)
A great time-waster that you can just jump into and fly.
I got the best quality wireless speakers in Eastern Bumblescum.
Oh gosh, let's see:
Ancestors Legacy (via Gamergate)
RAF Lion & Eagle (direct order)
(Note: also found the 2-player Tabletop Sim version)
D-Day Tarawa (direct order)
Fantasy General (GoG code for buying anything during the sale -- if anyone wants this let me know, I've got one already)
Everspace (GoG code for buying who knows how much during the sale ;) )
Divinity: Dragon Commander (GoG)
The Saboteur (at long last fixed by GoG <:-) )
Where the Water Tastes Like Wine (GoG)
WH40: Rites of War (GoG)
Full Throttle: Remastered (GoG giveaway)
The Age of Decadence (GoG, back during Thanksgiving I think, and henceforth from GoG, which I regard as being holiday season sale thanks to Matrix overlap STOP JUDGING ME!!)
D&D Stronghold: Kingdom Simulator (GoG)
Ultimate General Civil War (GoG)
Victory at Sea (GoG)
Polaris Sector: Gold edition (GoG)
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock: Anabasis (Matrix)
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock: Broken Alliance (Matrix)
(Weirdly, despite these games being available from day one on Steam, through Slitherine, the Matrixlitherine site can't or won't provide Steam keys for them... ??? )
Field of Glory II (Matrix)
War in the East Lost Battles (Matrix)
War in the East Don to the Danube (Matrix)
WH40K Gladius: Relics of War (Matrix)
Heroes of Stalingrad (Matrix) (plus a ton of nice mods for it)
CMANO: Shifting Sands (Matrix) (my first CMANO game)
Battle of Britain: Wings of Victory (Matrix)
Tigers on the Hunt (Matrix)
Stellaris (Steam) (a little fuzzy about when I got this, could have been Thanksgivingish)
IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 (Steam) (accidentally duplicated something I already had on GoG or possibly Gamersgate) (but it was dirt cheap so not much cash lost)
Close Combat: Last Stand Arnhem (Steam Thanksgiving)
Metal Gear Solid V Definitive Pile (Steam Thanksgiving) (not actually bought, picked up extra code from someone else's Thanksgiving loot)
Seven: the Days Long Gone (Steam) (also extra loot code from someone)
IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad (Steam Thanksgiving)
IL-2 Battle of Moscow (Steam Thanksgiving)
IL-2 Cliffs of Dover: Blitz (Steam Thanksgiving)
Heliborne (Steam Christmas, also ditto everything henceforth)
Trireme Commander
Lightning: D-Day
Isle of Skye
Foxhole
D&D Lords of Waterdeep (plus the two expansions)
Carcassone: The Official Boardgame (honestly unsure if this is superior to the iphone version I've already got, but it looks prettier)
......... um, relatively sure that's it so far during the Winter Sales. O:-) Oh! And Deity Empires (Steam) :nerd:
^ The force is strong with you ...
I think he's trying to match JH's count. :-"
Thinking of getting Majesty HD for 2.49...heh
And all the Sins of a Solar Empire DLC now that I can run that damned game.
Damn you DoctorQuest...now you got me looking at Wings of Prey.
How can anyone say no when it's 2.49?? That's my new price point ;D
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
No one can argue with 2.49!!
I had fun with the Wings of Prey demo when it came out but the DRM thing was an immediate no sale. Glad to hear they have fixed that and it is probably worth two-fiddy if you don't already have the IL2 stuff.
...I do have IL2 Battle of Stalingrad. I'm getting Wings of Prey to be my 'safe game' for when I fail at learning IL2.

Yeah it does seem promising from the hour or so I've played so far.
Games:
Outpost Zero
transport Fever
particle Fleet: Emergence
Underrail
Army General
Jurassic World Evolution
DLC:
Sudden Strike 4: Africa Desert War
Sins of a Solar Empire Forbidden Worlds
Sins of a Solar Empire Outlaw Sectors
Bomber Crew: US Army Air Forces
DCS Normandy
DCS WWII Assets
DCS Fw-190
^Do you have the other Sins DLCs?
Huw is your rig older? I haven't heard of performance problems before with Battletech.

Yes but it easily meets the requirements and handles far more demanding games. Nothing I could do made the slightest difference at all. I guess it's just one of those games that doesn't like my specific hardware configuration. But like I said, I didn't really like it anyway so I'm not bothered.
Interesting.

GearVR on black Friday
Galaxy Tab S4 LTE
Bought then immediately refunded Just Cause 3. The game had literally zero innovation from JC2. I'm pretty sure the "writers" just did a copy+replace for the forgetable names of JC3 into the JC2 plot.

Have a look at my wishlist (https://store.steampowered.com/wishlist/id/huwthepoo/#sort=name) for inspiration. I've trimmed it down to a manageable 168 games. :)
I actually didn't get anything, but between my boss, wife and in-laws I've got about $300 in Steam Credit so I can add more games to my library that I'll never play.
Nothing yet but I did pick up a new 4K TV to pair with my PS4, a sound bar for it and going to grab Red Dead Redemption 2 in the next day or two.
Plus I got my eye on some pc software.
So far only Pathfinder Kingmaker (Imperial edition), but I have been considering Deity Empires.
I'm now considering the Cossacks 3 GOTY edition to go along with the Sins of a Solar Empire DLC and Majesty HD. For ~15.00 it seems like quite a steal, reviews are good and it may help me look and feel younger. Somebody stop me!
Also considered the Divine Divinity 2 GOTY for a bit but at 30.00 it's a little high, still.

Me too, but at that price I need to be as sure as I can be.
I got Commander: The Great War on Steam as I enjoyed it on the iPad (until it was no longer supported). Surprisingly it looks great on my ultra wide screen.
I also put DCS' Viggen in the shopping cart then took it out since I've yet to learn more than just the basics of my last purchase, the F/A-18. But I do like ground attack aircraft and a bargain...
Commander: The Great War on Steam. Nice game. At only $10, I don't regret the purchase in the slightest. With the PotzBlitz Mod as an essential add-on, I can foresee myself continuing to, you know, actually play CTGW.
Beyond that, I have looked over the Matrix Holiday Sale list again and again. Nothing entices me to buy. I don't like throwing away my money on games that, being honest with myself, I know I will never play. I have plenty of more play worthy games purchased and installed here already that are little played, or never played. Why add to the collection?

My friend bought me ultimate general civil war. Very enjoyable. I didn't buy anything though, tight in funds and nothing sparking my interest
Congrats solops!!!
For me still haven't pulled the trigger on anything in the sale.
I might go for a Beyerdynamics DT-990 Pro headphones. From the stories I hear they must sound phenominal and would be driven well by my Soundblaster Zx with headphone amp.
But the thing is: I already have a very decent pair of Sennheiser G4me One's which sound nice already. I am not sure wether my ears would truely appreciate the difference in quality? I am not an audiophile. Years of noisy cockpits have wreaked havoc there, but I do enjoy high quality audio. Any of you nobbers have any input on this? 😊

Nothing yet.
Nothing really grabs me that I have not already got or the price is too steep for my wishlisted games that I know I will get and play once because they are single player.
I did consider getting the Desert map for DCS and did consider Thrones of Britiannia. But no.
I'm only grabbed OOTP19 ($5) so far... Still in my boardgaming phase, and adding anything to my (way too big) unplayed video games list just seems like overkill.
Jurassic World Evolution & DLC.
Total War: Warhammer II and many of the DLC's.
Nothing yet here, but reading this thread reminds me that there are some games out there I sort of want, specifically Thrones of Britannia and Warhammer I/II.
Looking at Wreckfest right now.
Mostly completed my GOG Library with games i already own:

- Stars in Shadow (with DLC)
- Polaris Sector Gold
- Stronghold Crusader 2

So far: Ogre and Wars Across the World
Got my 10 yr Matrix anniversary coupon today. Used it to snag Aggressors: Ancient Rome, Panzer Doctrine, and Land Doctrine for 41% off their $39 sale price. Of course the $16 in savings was then thrown away on WitE and the Don to Danube expansion which I have as much chance of playing as the WitPacific and WitWest games I bought the previous two years! Gary had better come out with something new for me to throw away my savings on next year.

No prior knowledge needed. Tactically simple, strategically complex, but not overly so. The AI is decent enough to challenge me. With the PotzBlitz mod especially --
an essential add-on, IMO; don't play the game without it -- there is much variation and replayability. The game can go down a different narrative path each time. Recommended.

I kind of liked the demo; and I'm glad the developer was able to be picked up by Matrix! I didn't check up on it again this year, but probably will next year.
After messing around with Deity Empires a little, I've refunded: it has promise but as one of the reviewers said, it's a rough diamond in the rough! Basically a functional alpha being marketed and sold as a finished product. Clunky UI with a severe lack of explaining setup options doesn't help. Too many other games do it better right now, but it does have good potential.

That was a good sales pitch. You had me at "Tactically simple, strategically complex". Just the kind of game I'm looking for. Heading over to Steam to burn some cash. Luckily not that much though :bd:

I just bought Chessaria. :)
I held out not getting anything until almost the last minute. Ended up picking up Children of a Dead Earth, Simple Rockets 2, and Expert Rifleman.
I grabbed OOTP19, Gravteam Tactics Mius Front and Book of Demons. I'll grab a couple of Matrix games this weekend before their sale ends.
I recently added:
Homeworld Remastered Collection
Distant Worlds: Universe
Bottom of the 9th
Got WH40k Mechanicus, Wars of the World plus the Tannenberg, Estonia and Finland DLCs and Majesty HD.
Played it conservative with games this year and have only picked up the Scourge of War Ultimate Super Napoleon Dynamite Collection.
Did my usual 'hold off and pretend I'm not going to buy anything and then panic buy when the sale's almost over' song & dance... Bit of a hodge podge this year, between Steam and GOG:
Invisible Inc.
Duskers
Heat Signature
Papers, Please
Victory & Glory Napoleon
World in Conflict Complete Ed.
Anno 1404
DLC for EUIV and Stellaris
I picked up Darkest Hour as well, but could not get it to run on my Win7 system no matter what I tried, so sent it back...

Cold Waters and War in the Pacific.
Too much.
Let's see;
Heart of Iron IV Colonel edition (got it last night as Green Man Gaming had it for $18)

Battlestar Galactica with all DLC
Armored Brigade
The Operational Art of War IV
Other games;

Mega Corp for Stellaris
Holy Fury for Crusader Kings II
Dharma for EU IV

Named for Admiral Darlan's home province: Gascogne (no i as it turns out). World of Warships factors her out as slightly better than the Washington/South Dakota/Alabama class in most ways. Essentially it's the last French battleship that even came close to being built.

The design was completed in 1940. Some materials were ordered. Nothing was ever built. The Jean Bart and the Richelieu were partly complete in June 1940 and escaped to Dakar (Richelieu -- broke up Operation Menace) and Casablanca (Jean Bart traded shots with a US Battleship during Torch and came out much the worse for the wear.) Richelieu eventually joined the allied fleets. JB was completed after the war....the last French Battleship to be completed. I guess Gascogne was the last serious French Battleship design and JB was the last completed. After about 1956 there were no operational French battleships in any case.
That's really interesting stuff, thanks Meng.
I ended up getting a $50 Steam gift certificate and bought a bunch more stuff than anticipated:
* Into the Breach has turned out to be a fantastic little title. It's a weird and novel puzzle solver game, but I've loved it so far.
* Battlemech hasn't been played yet, but is on my definite short list.
* Darkest Dungeon now darkens my Library as well!
* Gauntlet: Slayer Edition is my odyssey purchase back to video arcades in the early 80s, and I've already played a few hours with my 8-year old son. His mastery of the XBox controls is far better than mine! ;D
