November 41 underway. Weather was fair in the cold zone, severe in the mild and fair in the warm zone. Strat warfare was a diamond in USSR vs Axis and a Factory lost for the Allies.

Strat move: Axis moved an air unit to Bordeaux for R&R away from the RAF. Did you have a strat move in mind?

I'm not seeing a way to attach a file. Maybe my account is too new or maybe I'm blind, but I uploaded the Vassal log to Dropbox.

Strat move the unit that already has the marker to 2557 (RR crossroads)

Starting in the south. Afrika Corps moved south to take Batum. 2nd Panzer is doing a mobile attack on the Soviet army. 3 MP used. So at least two more attacks to come. Attacker DRMs: +2 german, +2 iso, +2 armor, -1 rough = +5. The Soviet army was marked low supply, but friendly cities block ZOCs just like a unit, so Batum was able to supply the unit last turn. Your option for a tank marker.

The Soviet army got eliminated in the first combat. On to Grozny: German armor attack on Grozny. Getting the kitchen sink treatment. Moved a Luftwaffe unit down to use a sortie. I placed an airdrop marker on Grozny as well. Attacker DRMs: +2 german, +2 armor, +2 sortie, -1 city = +5. Defender DRM: -2 airdrop. Your option for tanks.

A 6,4 roll turned into a DE result. Next activation is armor unit outside of Stalingrad. Mobile attack on Stalingrad. 3 MP used now. Attacker DRMs: +2 German, +2 Iso, +2 Armor in fair, -1 city = +5. Your option for tanks.

Stalingrad fell on the second attack. With its remaining MP the 4 Panzer moved to 2758. The low supply unit took Saratov and the Romanian army marched to the Volga.

Next activation is a mobile attack by an armor unit against the 27th army.  Attacker drms: +2 german, +2 iso, +2 armor = +6. Your option for tanks.

A 5,2 roll eliminated the Soviet unit. USSR national will stands at 10. With 4 MP left, the armor unit moved up for a mobile attack on Voronezh. Attacker drms: +2 german, +2 armor, +2 iso, -1 city = +5. You've got the option for a tank marker and a sortie from Moscow.

Die rolls stay ugly for USSR, but the air and tanks prevented a total disaster. 4,1 roll reduced the army. The Romanian army activated for a mobile attack. 3 MP used at this point. Attacker drms: +2 iso, -1 city = +1. Defender Drm: -2 reduced. Moscow has one sortie left and there is still one tank marker left.

The Romanian army flipped the army in Voronezh. The next activation sent a German garrison east past Stalingrad. Now to the north. Mobile attack on 6th army by the 4th german army. 6MP used at this point. Burning a sortie. Attacker drms: +2 german, +2 iso, +2 sortie, -1 forest = +5. Your option for tanks.

6,5 roll was a DD. After that, the garrison moved to 1748 to block. An air unit moved up to the area. Now the 17th army is attacking the 51st. I'm using the last sortie at Velikiye Luki. Attacker drms: +2 german, +2 sortie, -1 river, -1 swamp = +2. Your option for the last tank marker.

All finished. The attempted encirclement petered out and a couple of Axis units ended up out of supply. The file is in the dropbox now. For my remaining 6 points, I'll remove sorties from Velikiye Luki and Bourdeaux.

I finished up my half of the turn. There was one successful attack, but I think there was only one option from where to retreat.

When the turn track marker advanced, the US entered the war. It's also the Russian winter until March[?].

File should be on dropbox.

I went looking for the vassal file, but I didn't see it in the folder.  Maybe it ended up in another folder?

Post by: rstites25 on October 18, 2016, 07:31:56 PM
Sorry about that. It should be there now. I *think* I saved it locally in the folder I had been using before we switched to dropbox. Unfortunately, it was named next in the sequence there (something like 128 instead of 138). The date is right though, and I opened the file and it looks right. I renamed it in dropbox, so it will be the next one in the sequence there (hopefully).

Back again.  Running out of life events to get in the way, I swear (and I hope). I can't get married again in the near future (legally....and financially) so there's one less thing.

Russian winter in the cold and poor weather in the others.

Strat warfare: The Soviets have a partisans chit they can use to halve the german roll. Or the chit can be used in operational combat like a paradrop. Your option to use it in strat warfare. The Axis and the Allies have no chits to use in strat warfare.

No worries. Personally, I would've prioritized USE over marriage, but perhaps that's why I'm not married.  :arr:

I'll use the partisans for the Strat warfare roll.

Strat warfare was a diamond vs the USSR and the West lost another factory.

Axis strat move was to move an armor unit from Grozny to two hexes east of Jerusalem.

Your option for strat moves.

We start south of Moscow.  German armor unit attacking the 9th army.  The Romanian assault will wait for later. Axis DRMs: +2 german, +2 iso, -1 rough = +3, then halved for Severe weather.  Soviet option for one of three tank markers and the final sortie from Moscow. In poor weather they would add a +1 each.

I'll hold off and not use either.
Title: Re: Unconditional Surrender PBF cont
Post by: drep on November 17, 2016, 12:53:04 AM
I had a -1 for rough above for some reason. It's a clear hex, so the DRM was +4 then halved. 3,1 roll turned into 7,1 and the Axis was halved to 4,1 for a DR.  The armor unit has 4 mp left, so it is continuing the mobile attack.

DRMs: +2 german, +2 iso = +4 then halved. Soviets: -2 reduced.

Same options as before for support.

A 4,2 roll resulted in a DR. After that I did a bunch of shuffling around.

I'll remove sorties from all my air units: by Estonia, Velikiye Luki, Damascus, Bordeaux, and Calais.

It's General Winter's time to shine :)

So... is this game more like PoG or more like OCS? I can't tell from the pictures but I've heard good things.
Title: Re: Unconditional Surrender PBF cont
Post by: drep on November 30, 2016, 08:13:21 PM
It's got the scale of PoG and the hexes of OCS.  Other than that, it's a different beast than those two games. There's no cards, like in PoG, and the combat system and supply is simple compared to OCS. Combat is all DRM based -- there are no strength factors or column shifts

I think the selling point is that it's a strategic game of the ETO that doesn't take 100+ hours on the table and has the ability to go off the historical rails a little. It scratches an itch.

Allies took their turn. The miracle of Dunkirk Beirut (Haifa?) occurred to pull the BEF out to a port behind the lines. I forgot to spend production to flip it back to it's full-strength size. So there are two logfiles. The second logfile flips the BEF and pulls out the fighter fleet that I had originally placed.

Poor weather in the mild, severe in the warm. Diamonds for both strat warfare rolls.  My strat move was to move a garrison in Belgrade to the edge of the map by Stalingrad.

Any strat moves for you?

Is it possible to strat move the 3rd French North Africa unit to 5448, I'll do that. (I can't see any restriction that would prevent it, but I could be missing something.)

I'll strat move the Soviet unit in Kalinin to 1851.

Mobile attack on 10th garrison. 4 MP used at this point. Using a sortie and an airdrop. Attacker drms: +2 german, +2 armor, +2 sortie, -1 rough = +5. defender drms: +1 UK, -2 reduced, -2 airdrop = -3. your option for one of two tank markers.

That HIS stand battle was bloody!

Unfortunately for the Brits the Vassal came up with a 6,4 roll and the garrison was destroyed. Severe weather in Haifa prevented another attack. In Russia, a few units shuffled around to stay warm. Nothing else happened.

For my production, I'll reduce sorties on the 5 air units (2 by Velikiye, 2 in France and one in Damascus) and to mobilize an air unit in Berlin.

Nothing much for me either. I moved an air unit to the Mediterranean, and shuffled some Soviet units around.

I hadn't realized I had let this slip since January. Every time my thoughts turn back to this one, I think about how I can't let the USSR fall too soon so that I can keep the supply line through Caucasus Mountains intact.  :hide: A game of this complexity can't account for everything so it's not as if the designer was neglectful, but shipping and supplying the Afrika Korps through Tbilisi is Axis and Allies kinda stuff.

I'm somewhat embarrassed that I pushed the game into this weird edge case of Axis Turkey and Spain but with an off-limits Med. Then the thoughts of the chess-like combat in the USSR that we lamented over at BGG come up. Is it fair to say that you have also had a big gulp of this game and would rather not finish the pint?

Haha. Yeah that's fine with me.

What you hit on seems to be the problem with abstraction + sandbox. It certainly makes for some interesting situations, though.
